NEW YORK — Joaquin, you have competition. In a radio appearance reminiscent of David's Letterman's recent interview with actor-turned-rapper Joaquin Phoenix, Billy Bob Thornton gave a puzzling and difficult interview Wednesday.

Appearing on CBC radio, the Canadian public broadcaster, Thornton evaded simple questions and criticized the host for mentioning his movie background.

WATCH:

Thornton appeared on the show with his band, the Boxmasters, who are on tour with Willie Nelson.

When host Jian Ghomeshi asked Thornton when the band formed, Thornton said: "I don't know what you're talking about."

Thornton mostly gave brief, sometimes monosyllabic, answers. Asked what music he listened to when he was young, Thornton spoke about reading the magazine Famous Monsters of Filmland.

The actor took offense when Ghomeshi suggested he was passionate about music.

"Would you say that to Tom Petty?" asked Thornton.

Thornton eventually made it clear that he was angry with Ghomeshi for his introduction.

Story continues below

Ghomeshi began the show introducing the band by focusing on their music and prodigious output in less than two years. He did, though, introduce Thornton as an "Oscar-winning screenwriter, actor and director."

"You were instructed not to talk about ... like that," said Thornton, using an expletive.

Ghomeshi, who's also in the band Moxy Fruvous, replied that he was "just giving context." The host said he was pleased to simply talk about music and pointed out Thornton's band was getting attention partially because of the career he's had.

The 53-year-old Thornton won an Academy Award for his screenplay to 1996's "Sling Blade," which he also starred in and directed. This year he stars in "Manure," which played at the Sundance Film Festival, and "The Informers," which comes out later this month.

A lifelong musician, he appeared sensitive to any suggestion that music was a mere "hobby."

The interview, available to stream on and on YouTube at , was receiving hundreds of comments from listeners who almost uniformly lambasted Thornton.

After the interview, the band performed an instrumental tune without Thornton _ who didn't have his instrument. "I'm a drummer ... We don't cart those around at 6 o'clock in the morning," Thornton said.

Speaking by phone later, Ghomeshi said: "To not answer questions because I made the apparently egregious mistake of calling him an actor as well as a musician, it just seemed a little absurd."

He added: "It does raise questions about the expectations of parameters that people ostensibly think that they put on us as arts, culture and entertainment journalists."

Thornton's publicist, Arnold Robinson, said the actor had no comment on the appearance.

So BBT does an interview, for attention - but is very unhappy with the "type" of attention he is getting because it needs to be the exact, right kind of attention. So he proceeds to be pissy toward the media he approaches for attention; draws attention to this - the reason for his pouty, response. Actually more like a lack of response....as he was getting his attention decides he is upset and will not answer anything (music or otherwise) and will show his true rock n' roll rebel nature by displaying pure contempt for not just JG, but his (BBT's) audience as well. All because someone mentioned in the intro what he did earlier. Life is so unfair.

The general populace historically resents and resists anything that would have them stretching outside their comfort zone. In this case, certain listeners to Jian at Station Q, seem to be h e l l bent on revenge for being budged out of their ez chairs. The Boxmasters remain so much fun. Thank you for a fun interview BBT! The extra gravy was an insight into the odd way people interpreted it.

Danny Baker = Unknown Hinson

Billy Bob Thornton = Self indulgent artist

Lord is he punishing the interviewer for allegedly intimating that BBT is just an indulgent actor dabbling in music. Talk about a self fulfilling prophesy.

Billy Bob should've asked Willie Nelson, who's always gracious, how to give an interview instead of acting like a movie star.
It's pretty fatuous for him to compare himself to Tom Petty who has 19 Grammy nominations and won several including one with the Traveling Wilbury's, a gig you can't buy yourself into.
No wonder the band got kicked off the bus.

Would you believe my Enter key wasn't working? I'm re-submitting for readability...

C'mon Pipps, Are you feeling a little boxed in in your own life? A little overweight, aged, and lost? Did you miss the boat? I noticed this is the standard insult you have for everyone in this forum, except of course for Ram who has some playground/OCD issues of his own to work through.

It's obvious to me that you're projecting your own shortcomings onto the others, and then you're criticising those shortcomings because you don't know how to address your own problems. I don't mean any harassment; I'm just saying there are more constructive ways for you to deal with what's bothering you. If you do have honest, insightful things things to say then please say them without mocking everyone else. We're all entitled to our opinions, as they say.

Anyway, I think if BBT really wanted to keep his acting career separate from his musical ambitions, he should have changed his name or not acted as the spokesperson for the band. He is obviously using his fame to promote the band, which is hypocrisy given the rudeness he shows others who merely comment on it.

Cancel the Canadian tour? Hell, you may as well cancel the whole tour! I feel bad for Thorton's band mates, as his arrogant attitude may have cost them their music career aspirations. Their only chance of survival is to drop Billy Bob like a bad habit. That interview was a Nagasaki nightmare from a PR point of view!!!

Cheers to Thornton for sticking it to some smarmy Canadian DJ. DJ did NOT do interview as agreed and thus angered Thornton. Thornton is a free spirit and has been known to stick it everyone from fat cats Hollywood elites to . . . uh . . .smarmy DJs.Wish we had more like him. Go Thornton, go!

Watching this interview made me sad to watch Billy Bob. He comes off like so angry with everyone around him... can you imagine being a band mate to this man? He exudes selfishness...

Actually, it wasn't such a bizarre interview once they got past the stuff they weren't supposed to talk about. You have to watch the whole thing though.
It's obvious Billy Bob just wasn't going to discuss his acting career.

If Jian ever gets his life back and goes back to performing, he can name his band "Jian and the Geriatrics"....cause that what the bloggers who are so insulted by the BBT interview sound like. Jian does seem the type that would appeal to the "Assisted Living" crowd. That's ok too, Jian. Just quit taking it out on everybody else.

You sound just as smug and arrogant as Billy Bob. You derive a great deal of pleasure from insulting everybody who is not a fan of him and his music.

Small-minded, rude, narcissistic, angry man. I have no interest in him or his music. It's a 15 minute spot on a radio station, not a seminar at Berklee. You could use a lesson in gracious behavior, Billy Bob. Your host gave a good example.

That studio came across as boring as a canned corn and margarine on white bread sandwich. Billy Bob was simply having some fun trying to stay awake with Jian the 'not so entertaining one'. Q seems lazy entertainment. Jian has grown flabby, couldn't pull it off, and Canadian fans are in denial, embarrassed and mad. Rightfully so.

I know people whose idea of having some fun is to sarcastically put down those who are not as "well-informed", not as "hip", not as "independent minded" as they are. That is small behavior, needing to belittle others to prove how high and mighty you are. Perhaps Billy Bob could use his extensive and deep understanding of music to enlighten his audience a bit and raise the level of conversation. He doesn't seem like the type to walk that road. He seems self-absorbed and intolerant.

C'mon, That studio looked real good to me, and I've seen quite a few. How many radio studios have you seen?
It's a privilege to have an audience, in this case a radio audience.
Billy Bob failed miserably.

is it really so difficult to just go with the flow and admit that if tom petty starting doing movies, he's gonna get an introduction that includes--oh, i don't know--the fact that he's a musician too!!...yes, he's been making music for years, but most people don't know that.

i'm sure Billy bob Thornton is a fine guy and we all make mistakes and get angry and emotional, etc. But for crying out loud, the host gave the intro and then focused on music.

is thornton's skin that thin?

if i was the host, i think i would've called thornton some horrible name and kicked him in the groin. cudos for the host for not losing his cool and making it through to the inglorious end.
