NEW YORK — The Fox network is letting employees of some troubled small businesses decide which one of their colleagues will be laid off and turning the results into a reality show.

The series, "Someone's Gotta Go," is in production, but Fox wouldn't say on Wednesday when it would go on the air.

Each episode will feature a company with about 15 or 20 employees that needs to cut costs because of the economy. Instead of the boss deciding who is fired, the company will open its books to show everyone's salaries and let the employees make the call.

In an inverse to "The Apprentice," the chosen one loses, instead of gets, a job.

Fox says the laid-off worker will get a small severance, but isn't saying whether the network or producers are paying the participants in anything beyond the chance for prime-time fame. Fox is developing the show with Endemol USA, the company behind "Big Brother," "Deal or No Deal" and "Fear Factor."

Tory Johnson, founder and chief executive of Women For Hire, which organizes job fairs and advises women seeking work, said she wonders whether "Someone's Gotta Go" is a good idea at a time so many people are out of work.

"For most people who are concerned about job security or are desperate to get hired, I don't think there's much to laugh at in terms of watching someone else's pain and misery," said Johnson, a regular contributor to ABC's "Good Morning America."

But Mike Darnell, chief of alternative programming at Fox, said everyone who participates in the show knows fully what they are doing.

"I feel that it's part of the times that we are living in," Darnell said. "It's certainly no worse than watching the news every night and hearing all the statistics and watching what is happening. To be frank, like all these shows, if you don't want to watch, don't watch it."

Fox and Endemol have had "absolutely no trouble" finding companies willing to participate, he said.

Fox wouldn't reveal the show's host, which it says is a business consultant who will offer advice to participating companies.

Darnell, a fan of "The Office," said he'd been working with Endemol about a workplace show, perhaps involving an expert coming in to help a dysfunctional workplace, when he saw a news report about a company where the boss couldn't decide who to lay off and left the job to his employees.

That became the basis for "Someone's Gotta Go."

He envisions it as a story about employee empowerment. Many people in the workplace can relate to seeing a colleague laid off and wondered why someone else they perceived as less valuable kept their job, he said.

Darnell said he wasn't concerned about the emotional fallout in a workplace after "Someone's Gotta Go," where an employee might be left to work with a colleague they'd just said on national television should be fired.

"Sounds like good reality television," he said. "You just described a good concept for a reality TV show."

First it's HGTV with that new reality show taking advantage of desperate people in bad mortgage situations, and now this. This is just the beginning, folks.

I really liked "The Unusuals" last night on ABC, so I'm pretty sure that is already doomed. "Eli Stone" made the viewer feel pretty good about themselves in a tough world, so they had to go. "Pushing Daisies" was just plain funny and well-paced, so it had to go. "Dirty, Sexy Money" they could have turned into something super-interesting using our current circumstances, but brains and creativity is sorely lacking at ABC.

Hey excellent. Just what we need another reality show! Great that the networks out there know what we like. They cancel all the crap shows like Life on Mars and Eli Stone to make room for the good stuff. Way to go.

I find this as distasteful as those who feel the average American has the right to view the coffins of our fallen soldiers. That said, in both regards there are choices being made. With the returning fallen soldiers it is there families that have a choice, with this show it is the fellow workers and the demised employee. The only redeeming factor is the employee would have to be a willing participant, where as soldier has no say. There is another choice here, that of the viewers, refuse to watch this program. When the ratings come in and nobody is viewing it will be discontinued faster than a bug being zapped.

How, how, how is it that this mega-group continues to be allowed to exist? Why doesn't the monitoring body force a break-up of all this murdoch garbage?

I seriously think I'm going to be sick. What's next... "Hang em", where Fox News goes to one small town a day and let the citizens vote for which person in the community they want to hang. This is very troubling.

Or better yet give a generous donation to the town that rids of Illegal Aliens first. I smell a hit.

Are these people who get laid off going to be like Wagnor from GM and have to live off of a multi-million dollar settlement so they can continue their lifestyle of the idle rich? NO, these are hard working individuals who will be humiliated in front of millions of idiotic viewers and who will most likely lose probably their home, have their marriages destroyed, watch their children lose a chance to go to college and we call this entertainment? This is not right and Faux should be ashamed to even think this is entertaining. It will backfire for sure.

They have no trouble finding companies to go on this? Can you imagine being one of the employees at one of these companies? It's not bad enough that they're going to have such a possibly devastating moment in their lives televised for all of America to watch, but they're also going to have to come to terms with the fact that they are going to be the ones to possibly ruin a co-worker's life. That's not what anyone outside of management or HR signs up for when they take on a job.

It honestly sounds like a way for the lowly employees to be painted as the cut throat villains while management, the people who actually have this sort of thing in their job descriptions, get to avoid the mess. Maybe they think that their consciousness will be soothed by the remote possibility that the 15 minutes of reality TV fame that comes with this sort of thing will help their fired employee get a new job.

This is on-topic....

Reality TV = National Geographic for Humans...

Our species is quite peculiar... and worth broadcasting in this format, as loathsome as it is....

it's helpful for humanity.

no?

"It's certainly no worse than watching the news every night and hearing all the statistics and watching what is happening."

Sooooo......since he admits the premise, like the evening employment news - depressing, humiliating, cruel, degrading etc.......does this mean that this 'program' really needs to go into production and set a new low for TV Tripe? American Idol, Dancing With the Stars at least have a winner, no matter how saccharine they are. I think they should just let Trump run this show - he's a winner, everyone else is a loser. The invisible hand strangles again, live on TV no less, and the American Average Viewer can't look away.........the shows ratings can only climb as more and more people don't have to go to work in the morning. No wonder the French hate us...

Whose fault will it be If this show is popular?

It will be interesting to see the stats on viewers numbers on this show. I already have a poor opinion of most of the human race, hope that the demise of this show very quickly gives me some hope for the future.

who would watch this? Everyone is worried about their own jobs these days, not the entertainment anyone is looking for. Perhaps whoever planned and ok-ed this tv show should be the "someone's gotta go"
