I Like ItI Don’t Like It

As the Houston Chronicle reported Thursday, Betty Brown, a Republican state representative, is facing numerous demands that she apologize for having said that voters of Asian descent should adopt names that are "easier for Americans to deal with."

From the Chronicle:

The comments caused the Texas Democratic Party on Wednesday to demand an apology from state Rep. Betty Brown, R-Terrell. But a spokesman for Brown said her comments were only an attempt to overcome problems with identifying Asian names for voting purposes.

The exchange occurred late Tuesday as the House Elections Committee heard testimony from Ramey Ko, a representative of the Organization of Chinese Americans.

Ko told the committee that people of Chinese, Japanese and Korean descent often have problems voting and other forms of identification because they may have a legal transliterated name and then a common English name that is used on their driver's license on school registrations.

Brown's spokesman has said she was not trying to make a racially motivated comment. Her comments did, however, cause politicians as far away as New York to call on her to apologize for her statements.

As Kristv.com reports, one such complaint came from New York City Councilman John Liu:

In a letter to Brown sent Thursday, Liu called on her to either apologize or resign.

"It's outrageous and insulting for you to suggest it would 'behoove' us to adopt another name, to give up our birthright and a part of our own identity, in order to exercise our right to vote," he said.

I guess any name more difficult than Smith or Jones to pronounce, throws her for a loop. I hate to admit this, but I believe many Americans are racists. I thought from all the turmoil in the 1960s, this country and its people would be long past any racism. How sad.

Betty Brown is also working on legislation to have all people in Texas of Asian heritage undergo an operation to make their eyes round.

I work as a computer consultant for a lot of companies and I meet people from all over the world. When I meet someone and don't quite catch how to say their name correctly, I ask them to help me. It is just good manners. I take responsibility for not understanding and it has always worked out OK.

What was Betty Brown's family name before they emigrated to America?

I have an English name which is constantly mispronounced. I spell it just as soon as I say it on the phone. It is a really easy thing to resolve, not requiring people to change their names.

You all should ease up on Betty Brown. I know exactly where she's coming from. I recall when I was four I had trouble remembering when to say "she" versus "he." I asked my dad if it wouldn't be okay for me just to use "he" despite the gender of the subject. Much to my annoyance, he told me no. ;-)

But I love Betty Brown! It's so crispy and tasty!
I especially like it with a splash of Chinese apple (pomegranate) juice in it!

This is my favorite recipe.

BROWN BETTY:

Toast, cubed, approx. 6 slices
5-6 apples, peeled, cored & sliced
1 - 1 1/2 c. sugar, mixed with cinnamon
1/2 c. melted butter
1/2 c. orange juice
1/2 c. pomegranate juice

The sauce:
1/8 - 1/4 c. butter, softened
Granulated sugar
Confectioners' sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Instructions: Grease baking dish. Place layer of toast cubes. Drizzle butter over toast. Layer of apple slices. Drizzle with orange and pomegranate juice. Repeat until deep dish is filled, ending with toast layer. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes until bubbles and apples are done. Serve warm topped with Hard Sauce. Serves 6 or more.

Sauce: Mix granulated sugar and butter until grainy. Add vanilla and confectioners' sugar until smooth. Refrigerate until used.

oh wait... her name is Betty Brown?!? Damn I got confused by her name...

;-)

Is there a simpler way to write and pronounce 'dumb-ass'?

Well, it's not like she asked them to wear blue contact lenses and dye their hair blond. But, give it time I suppose.

Would she be asking this of Polish or Hungarian immigrants? I think not.

I've been trying to get a post in for the past hour or so...

All I have to say is, if this is the land where Zbigniew Brzezinski can be National Security Adviser without changing his name to Ziggy Brown then there ain't no reason why Chan Kong Sang should have to change his name to be successful in this country. (Ironically Chan Kong Sang did in fact change his name - he's better known as Jackie Chan)

At any rate, Brown's comments are backwards - I'm married to a 3rd generation Polish American woman with a surname that is commonly misspelled and mispronounced - I've told people how to say the name properly and they still struggle with it! Her mother's maiden name is a doozy as well. Many Eastern European surnames are very hard to pronounce, especially Polish and Hungarian ones, and don't get me started on the Armenians. Yet I don't hear Brown telling these people to change their names to fit in better. And ironically they were told to do just that a few decades ago. Why did the pressure on Slavic and other European folks to change their names cease? It certainly wasn't because Americans had suddenly become experts on Slavic languages!

There are over 250000 Poles in Texas - folks with names like "Moczygemba" and "Sienkiewicz". Maybe Brown should try and get them to change their names to "Smith" and "Jones". Let's see how far she gets with that.
