Michelle Obama's Down-And-Dirty Gardening Clothes: Working It! (SLIDESHOW)

In stark contrast to her polished appearance across Europe last week, Michelle Obama got down and dirty on Thursday while working on the White House Kitchen Garden with fifth grade students.

The first lady wore a blue t-shirt covered by a red windbreaker, black pants (with dirt!) and black velcro sneakers. Her hair was tied back in a loosebun. See below.

A pessimist will always see the glass half empty. You can be for certain that their very lives are reflections of their attitudes concerning First Lady Michelle Obama. I am so very delighted that she is confident and capable of making personal and professional decisions without the approval of others. She has certain proven to be succcessful up to this point. Whether intentionally or not, she is setting an example for her countrymen.

As well, she is America's best public relation campaign and she's making us look good so far. Why criticize that?

The Bush recession is an excellent time for us all to reaccuaint ourselves with the pleasures and nutritional benefits of home gardening. Do you have stock in farms run by cheap illegal Latin American labor or are you in the lawn maintenance industry? That is because, the only thing that interests y'all is lining your pockets. I don't know if she did or not. But that is not the point. These are different times. They are now in a position to try to set a good example for the American people. What is wrong with that? Many people are going back to veggie gardens, spurred on by the economy and the recent problems with lettuce, spinach, tomatoes.....

Most First Ladies of any substance try to find a way to connect with the American people. There are not many First Ladies, so they each sort of create their own standards. She is literally on her hands and knees trying to do her best and all you can do is criticize her. Shame on you.

Slightly off-topic. I've been watching this poll about FLOTUS's fashion and whether she needs designers like Oscar de la Renta. Right now about 900 people have voted. Getting your hands into nature must be the perfect antidote to the Washington scene and the formality of a long day's events. What could be more relaxing and recharging, along with the fact that she just enjoys this as a hobby? Maybe it will encourage even more urbanites to find ways to reconnect to gardening and nature that they hadn't focused on before.
