Top US Commander: We May Have To Stay Longer In Iraq To Combat al-Qaeda

Times London:

The activities of al-Qaeda in two of Iraq's most troubled cities could keep US combat troops engaged beyond the June 30 deadline for their withdrawal, the top US commander in the country has warned.

US troop numbers in Mosul and Baqubah, in the north of the country, could rise rather than fall over the next year if necessary, General Ray Odierno told The Times in his first interview with a British newspaper since taking over from General David Petraeus in September.

Who would have thought the invasion of a country that did us no harm, without an air force or navy and an army that would rather run than fight would be such a financial drain helping to bring us to the verge of bankruptcy. We could be in for another "100 years war". Mr. Obama for whom I voted, contributed to his campaign and worked in it had me believing that he would put an end to Bush's folly in Iraq. He now asks for 84.3 billion more for the expedition in Iraq and Afghanistan. Afghanistan has legitimacy and must be pursued because the al Qaeda criminals are there and suppling men and arms into Iraq. Mr. Bush has left this country in a horrendous mess and is now enjoying retirement in Texas among his "adoring" constituents while the rest of the country languishes in the misery he created at home and abroad.

If the aim was to get rid of Hussein and his weapons of mass destruction we would have left a long time ago.
