Dr. Laura: Gay Marriage A "Beautiful Thing And A Healthy Thing"

The Huffington Post   First Posted: 5/11/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Dr. Laura Schlessinger, conservative talk show host and author, talked with Larry King on Thursday and insinuated that while she's no supporter of gay marriage, she supports same-sex relationships as a "very healthy and very positive thing."

Discussing the recent court decisions to legalize gay marriage in Vermont and Iowa, Schlessinger told King she didn't have an opinion on the matter, but King questioned whether she was going back on her previous opposition to same-sex marriage.

KING: But you've always favored that marriage must be between a man and woman.

SCHLESSINGER: I'm very big on human beings finding love, attachment and commitment and being faithful to it, because there's more to benefit when there is real true commitment and faithfulness to it. I still believe, as just every president has, and all the people who ran for office, that marriage is a sacrament between a man and a woman. So not calling it marriage works for me. But that two people would have that sort of commitment to me is very healthy and very positive thing in their lives and society as a whole.

KING: So, you favor marriage between a man and a woman, but you applaud the fact that even people of the same-sex can have that kind of commitment to each other.

SCHLESSINGER: That's a beautiful thing and a healthy thing.

Isn't that a 180... Not 360?
06:15 AM on 04/24/2009
I know I've her Schlessinger say many times on her radio program that homosexuality is a choice and that they could change if they want to ... basically saying that they should.

No, she DID do a 360 because at a point much earlier in her career, she was a big supporter of gays. Then, she started bashing us, now this. Whatever, Dr. Laura.

She finally got out of the book of Leviticus? Must be a sign of the end of times (at least for conservatives). See open letter to Dr. Laura from 2002:

Just an opportunist. It's good for her bottom line, but meaningless for the rest of us.

Well said Terri. Thank you.

That headline is absurd and erroneous. She doesn't support gay marriage, she even explicitly states that she doesn't. But that she says, in the same breath, that gay relationships are "a beautiful and healthy thing" is refreshing, especially considering most gay marriage opponents take to comparing gay relationships to incest, bestiality and paedophilia. In fairness, she is an ally of gay people, just like Obama is despite his opposition to gay marriage.

Let gay people get married and be miserable like the rest of us.

"GROSS" is not a legal argument; nor a mature one.

I have yet to hear a legitimate legal argument against gay marraige.

I think ur gross but, then again this UR country.
Right??

People here are saying she is a hypocrite. . I don't like when people say they don't go to church because of all of the hypocrites. Well, there is a bit of hyprocsy in all of us.

I believe Dr. Laura goes to temple.

She has also been divorced. So much for the "sanctity" of her marriage. Or should I say her marriages?

Boy Has She Done A 360 !!!
11:23 PM on 04/12/2009
180. 360 is a full circle, 180 is an about face.

AGREED!!!

The right-wing lunatic fringe will throw poor Dr. Laura overboard now.
08:35 AM on 04/12/2009
I believe her full quote was "as long as you don't call it marriage". Which pretty much negates any pretense at equality. Bigots never like being seen for the true hateful bigots they are. Smoke screen, and not a very convincing one.
08:40 PM on 04/14/2009
That's unfair. I think gay marriage is absolutely a good, important thing, but we cannot say that Obama is -not- a bigot even though he opposes same-sex marriage, but is supportive of gay people in general, and then turn around and say Dr. Laura is!

Sorry "Megan Slack", but she didn't say that gay marriage is a beautiful thing and healthy thing. She opposes gay marriage.

She's a hypocrite. That's what it comes down to. If marriage between a man and a woman is such a "sacrament" then why did she get divorced? Her own parents (a man and woman) didn't have a good marriage. She began a relationship with Lewis Bishop while he was STILL married. He left his wife for HER.

They lived together for eight years without getting married.

So much for the sacrament of marriage.

I don't get it.
I've listened to her show before , lots of times.
Dr. Laura tells you the things that your friends will never admit.
Dr. Laura tells you the things that don't always sound pretty.
Lots of times, we are surrounded by people that just want us to "feel better"
at that MOMENT rather than solve the real issue the hard way.
Sometimes you need that honest , not-so-pretty opinion.
What's the big deal here?
02:31 PM on 04/14/2009
If you need that honest, not-so-pretty opinion, just continue posting here for a while longer and you shall receive it.

Is it just me, or is the single most offensive thing what the "Dr." said about Bristol? Not sure how many guys she's going to date, not sure if she's going to dump the kid to go to school? Those are some terribly leading "not sure's" about someone you don't even know. Bristol is a teenager who made a less than optimal decision. She never asked for her life to be the circus it devolved into, and certainly does not deserve to have her mothering bona fides speculated on by anyone on the left OR the right. Dating and going to school, you know, having a LIFE of her own will not make her a bad mother. Yeesh.
