Los Angeles Times:

Publisher Eddy Hartenstein said he decided to run the NBC ad despite newsroom objections because he was trying to ensure that The Times could continue to operate.

"Because of the times that we're in, we have to look at all sorts of different -- and some would say innovative -- new solutions for our advertising clients," he said.

Running the ad on the front page is not that big a deal, but as a consumer if I see that their's heavy advertising on the main page and other main parts of a paper, I'm less likely to buy the paper because I hate the amount of ads in media. It's no different than those annoying 30 sec forced ads I absolutely hate on the internet when wanting to watch a video of a news event.

Makes you wonder based on the publisher's remarks in this article if the LA Times may become more loose with facts with their stories in order to gain subscriptions and make the paper more attractive.

Eddy Hartenstein just put another nail in his newspaper's coffin

Doesn't everyone already know that the primary purpose of newspapers is to publish advertisements? You can't make a business of informing the U.S. public - there's just no demand.

Does anyone still read the Los Angeles Times?

yes...they are linked to quite often by huffpo and other news aggregators....unfortunately they are not compensated for their content...which leads to this happening...

And they wonder why the owner of a famous news aggregator is against news service fees.

You'll have a heck of a time finding an issue at the newspaper rack or at a convenience store after 8:00 in the morning, so I guess someone's reading it.

Is that the sound of the newspaper industry going down the toilet? With stunts like this you don't have to wonder why.

Personally I would question the value and credibility of ANY product whose promoters felt that this was the ONLY way they could sell it. This is one TV show I won't be watching.
