Obama's 'Pizza Policy Is Going To Have To Change': Lou Malnati's Owner

CHICAGO — The news is hitting Chicago deep dish pizza makers' eye like a big pizza pie.

President Barack Obama is having 140 people over to the White House Friday night for a some deep-dish pizza _ St. Louis deep dish pizza.

It seems during his campaign he had pizza from a restaurant called Pi in St. Louis. That's the story Pi assistant manager Lindsey Tornetto tells.

Whatever happened, the restaurant says the owner and his partner packed dough, cheese and pizza pans in their suitcases and flew to Washington.

It all has Marc Malnati _ owner of 30 Lou Malnati's Pizzarias in the Chicago area _ shaking his head. He says he likes Obama's economic policy, but thinks the president's pizza policy should change.

I don't know...I think Sally's breaks even with Pepe's, but new Haven has the best pizza anywhere. New York, Chicago, St. Louis (?) all run a distant second to New Haven's Wooster Square Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, or Sally's Apizza.

Arguing pizza is like arguing about which city has the best hot dogs. They're different, and it's a good thing that there are still some regional differences given the homogenization of American culture and food.
I say viva la difference and learn to enjoy different things, folks!

One other point: Pi's is NOT traditional St. Louis pizza (like IMOs), which I have never learned to like despite trying to be open minded!

Some embarrassing things about "St Louis Style" pizza, (Translate: Imo's) include it being cut in squares, a crust so thin it only has one side and the topping sticks to the bottom of the box and that spackling paste they call cheese. Other then that it's just awful.

Who cares? I live in Chicago. I work in Chicago. Most of my friends live and work in Chicago. I don't know anyone here who is the slightest bit concerned about where President Obama orders his pizza from. We're all thrilled that the rest of the country is finally seeing the great, vibrant leader who we've come to know over the past 5 years.

Pizza? Please. We've got many more real issues to discuss.

Yep. Does it really matter where the president gets his pizza or what kind of dog they're getting? Too many people get too worked up and are far too involved with what the Obamas are doing. Like they should have a say over the Obama's lives. Being an Obama supporter doesn't entitle one to decide for the president where he should get his pizza, and so on....

As you said: we have real issues to discuss - not this trivial BS about pizza, dogs, the over-analysis of what Michelle Obama wears, etc., etc.

Who cares where Obama gets his pizza, but let's talk pizza. I am a Chicagoan. Deep dish pizza is disgusting and its more like pizza casserole. Sorry, NY style pizza is actually pizza and much better. Chicago is a great place with crappy pizza. There's plenty of great pizza places of course, i'm just referring to the "chicago style" pizza. All of this is subjective, but doesn't pizza have to at least resemble what italians call pizza?

I ate at Pi last month and talked to the owner. They make the crust with cornmeal. It's delicious! I've also had plenty of Chicago deep dish, it doesn't compare. Totally different taste, it's much lighter, not as dense. Thumbs up!
