New York Times:
Members of the Sunni Awakening Councils, the former insurgents who switched sides to help bring calm to Iraq, are increasingly being besieged from all sides.

It was just a matter of time until the majority Shiites began to seek more retribution against the minority Sunnis for what went on while Saddaam was in charge!! These religious loons have hated each other for the last 1500 years!! No Crusader Army will end this! Get out now and save the troops!!
In the LATimes this morning is an article about U.S. soldiers skimming $$ off the top of payments to Sons of Iraq militia made by the U.S.
No wonder they are confused by our lack of cohesive policy over there. It has already changed again and we are now arresting them - after skimming a little more, again.
The Pentagon is out of control.
If the surge worked so brilliantly then why this resurgence of sectarian violence occurring?
Bottom line. War is a moneymaker. Without it how would the 600 plus billion to 1 trillion dollars spent for the Dept of War makes its way into the gold lined pockets of the only corporations that are making money in todays economy?
If you didn't think that back when the US govt decided to start paying AND arming the Sunni awakening council members that they hadn't thought through the eventual consequences of that action then I have bridge in Brooklyn I can sell you.
It wasn't the surge that stopped the fighting it was the cash paid to buy off the Awakening council for an interim reprieve. Now that the money has run out from the US and they are dependent on the Iraqi govt the sectarian violence we are witnessing is rearing its head again.
We simply refuse to learn our lessons that the corporations have everything to gain and we are the losers. Again and again and again.
If you don't understand why this continues watch this video about the DC corporate party circuit. It explains why we are continually being used as chumps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7NJ8Z5sE_Q
I posted these comments five days ago on another thread. Do we not have anyone in charge capable of understanding cause & affect or the age-old law "for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction? You simply cannot disarm the minority and allow the majority to remain armed to the teeth.
Do not allow yourselves to be lulled into a false sense of success or victory In Iraq, the reductions we have seen in American casualties could soon be replaced by reports of serious losses. I say this with respect to the recent very troubling uptick in bom*bings in Baghdad. It appears we are once again witnessing the willingness of Iraqis to engage in sectarian violence. The Shiite-led Iraqi Government, urged on by the White House, is demanding the Sunni Awakening Councils disarm their militias. This does not bode well for security in not only Baghdad, but in places like Ramadi, Tikrit, and the rest of the Sunni Triangle. The Awakening Councils or the "Sons Of Iraq", largely made up of ex-insurgents may well feel threatened and decide to revert to their devas*tating insurgent tactics. That could deter U.S. plans to remove all combat troops from Baghdad and other cities by the end of June 2009 and end the U.S. combat role in Iraq by September 2010. It could also lead to ever increasing US casualties.

They sold their heritage. In doing so , they sold their identity to the Shite governemnt and American military.
What do you expect ?
This is typical behavior by the US military. We abandon our allies faster than changing socks. If the military wanted this poor soul released, they could get it done very quickly. For reasons not stated, this is not being done. Rest assured, if he is released and not disappeared, he will be a very bitter renewed enemy. Can't blame him either. Getting into bed with the US has always been a double-edged sword. We can leave (And ultimately do) while they have to remain and suffer more consequences.
What allies are those? We have no allies in Iraq. We have some paid stooges who see supporting the US as the best way to power for themselves. We have the Sunni militias who were paid millions in cash to stop fighting the government. We have the Kurds who are buying their time until ready to declare their own country in the north.
None of these people qualify as 'allies'.
It's Bush's Potemkin Village. And the second we leave, the religious sects who are completely identical to anyone with half a brain are going to start killing each other wholesale. And when the dust clears, we're going to see a country that's just as obnoxious, just as brutal and just as hateful to the US as they were when Saddam Hussein was running things.
We brought democracy to Hell. Isn't that great?!!
Seems like we specialize in all the wong moves lately... I hope "O" .... kicks it out soon.....

I see that Iraq has adopted once again the Cheney Model of Governance. Maliki's other friends better get out their double bullet proof vests.
Lessee---wasn't it Gen. Odierno himself that directly contradicted his Commander In Chief after a promise to let the IRAQUIS handle their own problems? Apparently--this was one of those problems that the Iraqui government i supposed to be able to handle--one that it WANTS to handle. And we have a General telling us that American troops might have to stay in order to 'battle Al-Queda'?? Hmmm---I wonder who and what is REALLY behind this new 'outbreak of violence'? Could a certain American general be looking for a pay raise or an extended tour--maybe a medal or commendation?
Odierno is a rogue. He was undermining President Obama before he and General Petraus even met with him to discuss Iraq. After the meeting he still tried to go his own way only to backtrack a few days later when called on it. He's back at it again. He is a warmonger.
