BASEL, Switzerland — Roger Federer married longtime girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec on Saturday in a small ceremony in his hometown.

The second-ranked tennis player announced the wedding on his Web site, saying the couple got married "surrounded by a small group of close friends and family."

"It was a beautiful spring day and an incredibly joyous occasion," he said.

The couple announced last month they are expecting their first child.

Federer is set to play in next week's Monte Carlo Masters after accepting a last-minute wild card invitation Thursday. Federer is a three-time finalist at the clay-court tournament but has never won.

After struggling with his form last year and losing his No. 1 ranking to Rafael Nadal, Federer is aiming for his sixth Wimbledon title this summer. He lost to Nadal in the Australian Open final, the year's first major.

did anyone see roger go crazy on the court the other day.
he has lost his edge and should just stick with endorsements.
he has had a great run and should not embarrass himself anymore.

Roger is my sports idol, and Mirka is, well, just a doll. Good luck kids!

Roger has been my idol for a long time. The way he plays his tennis and the way he lives his life is inspirational. His recent losses and tantrums have not diminished my respect for him. It shows he is human too and going through a rough patch.

He has been with the same girl for 8 years. All the money and success have not gone to his head. Like some one else on the board said Mirka is so real. She is not some assembly line bimbo with dyed hair, lipo, plastic surgery and fake boobs.

I pray that you win the French and take at least 3 more majors. You can do it, Roger.

It is time to be a responsible man. I guess he wants to have a child like Tiger Wood, they are friends. Good for him.

If Tiger weren't playing in Augusta this weekend, I'm sure he would have been at the wedding. These two are very good friends. They have in common that they completely dominated their respective sports for the last decade or so and, for a few years, were absolutely untouchable by all other opponents.

Much happiness and best wishes to Roger, his bride and the baby-to-be!

As a tennis fan, Roger has brought me much joy and fun. Hope he gets the same out of his marriage. Go, Roger!

some comments here are absolutely CLASSLESS to say the least

he and Mirka have been together for more than 8 years and they are inseparable so signing a piece of paper in my honest opinion doesn't make a difference whatsoever
I mean in an interview to GQ just 2 years ago he said that just waking up next to Mirka made him happy. They are in love with each other;they are expecting a baby;they've been engaged since last year;making her Mrs Federer was just a matter of time.
She's been Mrs Federer for him;without the title for years now

to those bashing Federer for getting married,he's won Slams without a coach for close to 2 years now and I'll remind some of you that Federer is NO LLeyton Hewitt. He's won 13 slams already and is 1 slam win away from tying Sampras.Unlike Sampras;Federer has and can make ALL 4 slam FINALS!

Roddick is getting married to a 20 year old SI model this weekend or next weekend, nobody's bashing him for that huh and he's a ONE-slam wonder?

Congrats Roger and Mirka
have a wonderful marriage and safe and happy baby

You really seem to be taking this personally. I agree some of the comments on this post have been juvenile and asinine to say the least but I'm not sure why you're defending his marriage by stating the Grand Slams he's won. What's the connection? And, although I agree he's a great player (who can dispute that), you have to admit that Federer hasn't exactly had the highest caliber competition to play against over the past years. He caught Sampras and Agassi when they were past the heights of their careers and Agassi has actually won all four Grand Slams, not just made it to the finals of all four. And comparing Federer to Sampras isn't fair since Federer has not won Roland Garros ever and likely never will as long as Nadal is around and healthy.

No one is talking about Roddick because Roddick is a second-rate player and only people who are serious tennis fans know the guy is getting married.

Only way Federer wins the French Open is if Nadal is injured or not there.

I guess Letterman is a trend setter.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:07 AM on 04/12/2009

Except Federer isn't like 58, and for most part the best at his job for last 8 years, unlike Letterman who has pretty much been #2 to Leno since Leno took over.

ah yes the "good old days" when junior is raised to be mom's little brother for fear of disgracing the entire family. What's the big complaint - this is a baby that will be loved and one that they can afford. Every child should be so lucky...

Federer has been a fantastic player, but maybe its time to settle down and hand the racket over to Raffie.
