AUSTIN, Texas — A Texas lawmaker under fire for saying that Asian-American voters should adopt names that are "easier for Americans" has apologized for her remarks.

State Rep. Betty Brown, R-Terrell, issued an apology Thursday for the comments made during a House Elections Committee hearing on April 7.

Brown said the remark came during a conversation on the difficulty of translating names and that she was referring to transliteration issues when she asked a representative of the Organization of Chinese Americans whether Asian-Americans could adopt names that "we could deal with more readily here."

Ramey Ko, the representative, had testified that people of Asian descent have problems voting because they sometimes list legal names that had been transliterated in addition to common English names on their driver's licenses or other identification.

Brown said she was not asking Ko to change his name.

New York City Councilman John C. Liu, who along with the Texas Democratic party had called on Brown to apologize, said in a statement that the apology was "a fair first step," but didn't go far enough. Liu said Brown's comments during the exchange with Ko went beyond the concept of transliteration.

Brown said in her apology that she understands the "diversity of Texas" and the "enrichment" that Asian-Americans have brought to the state.

Her spokesman, Jordan Berry, told The Associated Press on Saturday that Brown's comment was being used by opponents of voter identification to obscure the real issues involved.

"Ninety percent of Texans _ Republicans and Democrats _ want the voter ID legislation," he said, referring to a bill recently passed by the state Senate that would require photo identification to vote. "Let's move forward."

Only the left could express outrage over this conversation, which as you can see below, the context of which was a discussion about making it EASIER for Chinese americans to vote.

BROWN: Any suggestion for us for something that would help the Chinese community, uh, that would be easier on them?
WITNESS: One suggestion off the top of my head would be some type of provision addressing the problem with names. That’s actually one of the most frequently noted problems that happened in the 2008 election, which is the problem with a lot of voters having problems because their names didn’t match.
BROWN: Well, rather than everyone here having to learn Chinese — I understand it’s a rather difficult language –
WITNESS: Right.
BROWN: Do you think that it would behoove you and your citizens to adopt a name that we could deal with more readily here, since you’re talking about –
WITNESS: Well, –
BROWN: I mean I’m not talking about changing your name, I’m talking about the transliteration or whatever you refer to it, that you could use with us.

It must be exhausting, manufacturing reasons to apply pent up outrage all the time.

1) pinyin - a standardized romanization of chinese sounds - exist and has for some time. It's not hard to transliterate

2) the transliteration process would have happened well before the immigrants showed up to vote - probably during naturalization or even earlier when they got their drivers licenses or other official documents.

hence: she didn't want it make it easier for chinese or other asians to vote, she wanted them to change their names to something "easier" because she and others like are too lazy, too stupid, and too ignorant to want to 'deal with' their birth names.

Or maybe she was just having a conversation with an asian american about how to make things easier and avoid problems?

Whether she (Brown) was right or wrong about her suggestion and if it would, in fact, make things easier for chinese americans to vote, is not really my point.

My point is that what she said was not racist........unless you spend your day just hoping, needing, to find something to be outraged about.

In this case, you have to want to find racism, in order to find it in Brown's statement.

And the only way you could find imaginary racism in her statement is if it rode in on an equally imaginary unicorn.

"Racist" aspect of her comments are "it would behoove you and your citizens". She is basically implying that Asians are not US citizens. Obviously if you can vote you are a US citizen. It is very offensive for one person to assume that a person is not an American based on the color of their skin.

What's the matter with Texas?

How does anybody rational live there? I just read today, that the state of Texas is removing the age of the universe from textbooks.

Honey, that perm looks like it was a little too tight this time and it's affecting your ability to be rational.

If she wanted immigrants - or anyone for that matter - to be consistent with their names, just say, "Make sure the name you give when you register to vote matches what is on your driver's license or other offical documents." Not necessary to mention ethnicity.

She said what she meant the first time and she's only sorry she got busted.

Apology not accepted.

Maybe you should just get smarter, dimwit Betty Brown.

You probably use Betty because you can't spell or pronounce Elizabeth.

Texas is changing and I can assure you that the state will be purple for 2012 and blue in 2016.
Alot of those old farts will be in their final resting place by then and the migratory movement underway now will bring about those desired results.

You say you can assure that Texas will be purple by 2012 and blue in 2016. I like the sound of that, but out of curiosity, what are you seeing that makes you so sure?

I don't know what Eggygen is seeing, but I can tell you what I am seeing:

Last election, Houston and Harris County voted for Obama. Harris County elected a Democratic DA. Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin all voted Obama. The Valley area and the border with Mexico were also in the blue.

Texas, without a state tax and considered business friendly, has been bringing in companies from quite a few blue states. With these companies bringing workers that lean left and the influx of people moving here over the years, by 2016, we will be blue.

The big issue here is that Texas (my state of residence, but I am not a constituent of Ms. Brown) is about to vote on a new version of Jim Crow laws. The Texas legislature wants to make it mandatory to have a photo ID to vote in order to prevent voter fraud. This would create problems for the elderly and poor at the polls. We don't have a significant problem with voter fraud in Texas. This is just a smoke screen to prevent eligible voters from voting.

Unbelievable! People like Betty Brown thinks that they are so American and have the right to tell someone who's different from them that because your names different from mine let's just change it so it'll be easier for everyone like Betty Brown. This is like the stuff they were doing on Ellis Island in the 1900's when ignorant people like Brown were changing the last names of Italians, Germans, Irish, and anyone different from them. Maybe she should realize that it's the differences in this country that make this the best nation on Earth. If everyone's last name were Brown, I'm sure she would love that. This is the typical ignorant backwater Republican stuff that is messing up this country.
If she said to me that I should "simplify my name" so I can be more American for her, well lady, I'm a Chinese American and I served two tours in Iraq and was wounded for people like you. If you wanna simplify my name, you come here and try and take my name tag of my Army uniform.

I'm quit sure that Betty doesn't really have the slightest idea why she is apologizing. A little consciousness raising would be in order here.
