I Like ItI Don’t Like It

WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy is showing only glimmers of life and two costly wars remain in the balance, but President Barack Obama's "no drama" handling of the Indian Ocean hostage crisis proved a big win for his administration in its first critical national security test.

Obama's quiet backstage decision to authorize the Defense Department to take necessary action if Capt. Richard Phillips' life was in imminent danger gave a Navy commander the go-ahead to order snipers to fire on the pirates holding the cargo ship captain at gunpoint.

For Obama, the benefits were instantly clear: an American life saved and a major victory notched against an increasingly worrisome scourge of the seas off the Horn of Africa.

Obama's handling of the crisis showed a president who was comfortable in relying on the U.S. military, much as his predecessor, George W. Bush, did.

But it also showed a new commander in chief who was willing to use all the tools at his disposal, bringing in federal law enforcement officials to handle the judicial elements of the crisis.

The rescue appeared to vindicate Obama's muted but determined handling of the incident. What won't be known for some time is whether Obama will benefit politically.

When Obama campaigns for re-election, he may take Bush's approach of turning any such incident into evidence of his leadership acumen. On the other hand, Obama didn't go before the cameras Sunday to trumpet the success, instead releasing a written statement that saluted the bravery of the military and Phillips but claimed no credit for himself.

Also, this crisis, while topping the news now, may fade into distant memory by the time voters get a chance to take any new measure of Obama and his party.

Story continues below

Still, it goes some way toward dispelling the notion that a liberal Democrat with a known distaste for war _ Obama campaigned on his consistent opposition to the Iraq invasion _ doesn't have the chops to call on U.S. military power.

The sniper operation Sunday, with pirate guns aimed at Phillips, was a daring, high-stakes gambit, and it could have easily gone awry. If it had, the fallout would have probably landed hardest on Obama.

Indeed, the last Democratic president to unleash American military might against Somalis suffered miserably from the failure of that operation. Portrayed in the book and movie "Black Hawk Down," a U.S. peacekeeping mission ordered by President Bill Clinton ended with a humiliating withdrawal of troops after a deadly clash in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.

The outcome this time was vastly different.

Since the standoff began last Tuesday, Obama made no public, in-person remarks on the topic, even declining to answer when questions were shouted at him during a press availability.

He didn't call in his Cabinet for a high-profile command meeting. He let military and top administration officials do the talking, but even they kept saber-rattling out of the equation.

White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said Obama's silence should not be interpreted to mean that he wasn't deeply involved. The president's public posture was calculated to not raise the temperature on the situation or give the hostage-takers anything to exploit.

"Let's not confuse a public role with being on top of the situation," Emanuel said. "If you'd interjected yourself, you would make the discussions that were happening more difficult."

So what Obama did was receive regular briefings, sometimes as often as half a dozen times a day. He weighed in with two critical decisions allowing the military to take action to save Phillips' life. And he laid the groundwork for a federal criminal law enforcement response.

White House officials said the Justice Department is already reviewing evidence to determine whether to file criminal charges against the captured Somali pirate. The U.S. is treating the matter as a criminal case because officials have found no direct ties between East African pirates and terror groups.

Obama doesn't like labels for himself or catch phrases for policy. So it's notable that in an administration that has for all intents and purposes banned the phrase "war on terror," no one called the pirates "terrorists."

The Boston Globe had a lead op-ed this morning in which the author praised Obama's handling of the incident, but then went on to state that Obama's main accomplishment was rejecting calls by "liberals" who wanted to pay the pirates ransom demands and let them go.

I know a lot of liberals, myself included, but I don't know of any making such a call. Anyone else heard of such a position? If liberals won't take a position conservatives want them to have, they just make up fake "liberal" positions to berate.

"the pirates were a quiz"

And I think the quiz was multiple choice and looked something like this:

How should we handle the pirates in the dingy?

a) Take them out, save the hostage.
b) Take them out, save the hostage.
c) Take them out, save the hostage.
d) All of the above.

Three more ships have been hijacked. We should save the presidential back-patting for real national security issues.
In the meantime, the President needs to get the attention of his G20 world leader friends to have the UN mount a blockade in those perilous waters. What is really happening with this?

OBAMA MUST GO TO UN TO ORGANIZE BLOCKADE

The President has to start showing gumption and Somalia is the place to start as it is more than just a haven for pirates but for radical Moslems in bed with Iran. While we cannot invade Somalia as head of an international force, as I naively proposed, we can, as others are suggesting, blockade Somalia's ports from which the pirates launch their attacks and Islamo-nazi terrorists operate. This will serve as a warning to Iran that blockading their ports and the economic strangulatuion of their country could be next. Obama should go to the UN and propose a Somali blockade and failing that he should then do what George Bush did in Iraq: organize a coalition of the willing.France, Britain, Poland, whoever will join to protect the high seas and rid them of the pirate scourge.........

Somalia is next. Look for major action to occur shortly wih Iran, Israel will trigger the conflict. In the next 4 years, Conservatives will be the ones embracing Obama while LIberals will have come to there senses that Obama is a neocon in dosguise.

It is so nice to have an adult in office. He did not fan any flames. He did not call them any names. He did not say "dead or alive" He simply spoke softly, and carried a big stick.

That's not what the president has said either. He simply congratulated the Navy seals that performed their jobs very well. Why can't you "real americans" do the same. Instead of trying to find some stupid reason to discredit the president and all others involved in that rescue. Peoles lives were at stake and for a change, it didn't get boched up and become a worldwide embarrasment. You seem a little disappointed, and we are so glad you are!!!

How the hell do you know what happen? Because the media "told" you? The same media that "told" you about the rescue of Pfc. Jessica Lynch. Shut up. People have a good reason to be doubtful anymore.

it would have been the same if bush was in office , the navy commander gets the credit obama didnt do anything other than stay out of it and let the navy do its job, they already had the ROE so they didnt need anything from obama. give credit were credit is due to the Navy snipers and theyre captain.

The President certainly did pass his first National Security test but it is a relatively small test. Just as W's "winning of the war" was eventually dwarfed by his mismanagement of post-war Iraq, the success in putting this incident down will soon be forgotten if it is not followed up by some sort of long term solution of the Somalian Pirate epidemic. Fresh off this victory, our President, along with his national security team is in a great position to lead an international coalition to deal with this issue. The good news is that this President, far more than the last one, is smart enough to know that this is the beginning of a solution, not nearly the end of it. His recent efforts at diplomacy should pay off big time as he deals with this the way that W didn't deal with Iraq, by leading the global team that will make it safe to sail the African coast again.

Authorizing the Seals to take out the pirates was a small first step-as it was Easter Sunday it pointed to a resurrection of American strength. Unless Obama establishes himself as a leader to be reckoned with, a warrior and man of strength, he will remain the object of ridicule, laughter and contempt by our enemies who perceive him as a weak, groveling, spineless man. A Jimmy Carter on steroids.

Unless the President moves aggressively on Samolia he may lose the one chance he has to become a man like Captain Phillips and the intrepid Seals that saved his life and set him free. Obama has been given a sign: unless he takes a firm stand, stands like a man and shows Jeffersonian resolve in dealing with the Somali pirates, the Carterization of our foreign policy will continue and our weakening nation will inadvertently drift toward chaos, upheaval and war, and the looming meance of nuclear Iran.

While clearly we agree on much of this, I disagree that this is some sort of test of his manhood. A leader who feels a need to prove his manhood is a dangerous liability. A leader who is already confident in his own steadfastness is what we need and what we have.

He seeks diplomacy and you call it Carterization. Somalia shouldn't be our burden alone. Let us lead the world in this fight and let it not be just our soldiers in harms way. Standing up to your enemies takes guts, but so too does taking a leadership roll among your allies.

I posted this under the article about the incident, but should have posted it here:
I stopped on the faux channel just now and Hannity was spouting on about how the president didn't say anything during the incident and then raced to the cameras to try to "take credit" for it. And he asked his guest, Bernie Goldberg, tthe guy who wrote " A Slobbering Love Affair: The True (and Pathetic) Story of the Torrid Romance Between Barack Obama and the Mainstream Media to comment. But Goldberg immediately and vehemently pointed out that it isn't fair to try to never give Obama credit for anything! He went on and on about it, and absolutely wouldn't go along with any of the garbage Hannity was trying to throw out! Hannity kept trying to get him to agree with at least one of his stupid points, but had no luck - Goldberg even called the criticism "petty." :)

I see in these threads some tendency to attach some sort of "nobility" to these pirates... attempts to romanticize them.

If they were taking their ill gotten gains & using it to FEED, CLOTHE, EDUCATE, or otherwise uplift their fellow Somali's.. I could at LEAST acknowledge the fact that they might have had some mission other than GREED.

I STILL would not condone nor FORGIVE their actions, even if that WAS the case.

But it's NOT the case.

These are self-serving MERCENARIES with ZERO loyalties & their SOLE purpose is self-enrichment.

Period.

They couldn't care LESS about the plight of the Somalis... they go back with their LOOT & build MANSIONS for themselves in the midst of the wretchedness of their OWN PEOPLE.

We did the RIGHT THING, here... & our President handled it PERFECTLY in every regard.

NO empty theatrics (like wearing a codpiece)...

NO empty rhetoric (like "bring 'em on")...

NO emptyheaded planning (like... well you NAME it)...

Quiet... professional.. level-headed.. RESOLVE.

And where are the anti-war liberals around here. Samalians have always returned hostages after ransom is paid. Wouldn't you all prefer that to the loss of human life, be it samalian or american? Have you all lost your bleeding hearts now that Obama is president? Is violence now justified? YOU BUNCH OF NEOCONS!!!

They'll mainly lay low because this can be used to prop up Obama. If it was Bush who gave the nod to pull the triggers, you can bet they'd be freaking out.

(For the record, I was in favor of pulling the triggers.)

This just shows that you've never bothered to try to comprehend the opposition to Bush. You need to characterize it as blindly pacifist so you can imagine you are superior to it.

Stay full of yourself and continue not trying to understand anything. You can already kiss 2012 goodbye. 2016 is your next chance.

No the pirates may rant and rave but they will think twice before trying to steal another American vessel. Maybe the insurance companies should stop insuring the vessels for first line piracy payment and make them have military or freelancer on each American ship until the world decides to assist Somalia transitional government to get this country back in line.
