LOS ANGELES — Mel Gibson's wife of 28 years filed for divorce Monday, citing irreconcilable differences.

Robyn Gibson filed the petition, which offers no details of the breakup, in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The couple have seven children, but only one under 18. Robyn Gibson has requested joint custody of their son who turns 10 on Tuesday.

Details of how the couple's assets will be divided were not spelled out in the court filings. Robyn Gibson is seeking jewelry and earnings and assets she accrued after the couple separated, and a share of the money and assets Gibson, 53, has earned during his nearly three decades as a Hollywood hitmaker.

She wants the actor-director to pay spousal support and her attorney's fees.

Mel Gibson filed a response to the divorce within four hours of his wife's filing, stating that the couple separated in late August 2006. He does not want to pay Robyn Gibson spousal support and is seeking that attorneys' fees be paid out of the couple's joint property, the documents show.

His divorce was first reported by celebrity gossip site TMZ, which made a splash for its reporting of the actor's anti-Semitic slurs uttered during a drunken driving arrest in July 2006.

The Gibsons released a joint statement Monday, seeking privacy.

"Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so," the statement read.

The couple were married in June 1980, court records show.

"Mad Max" in 1979 brought Gibson his first international attention, closely followed by the critically acclaimed "Gallipoli" and the Mad Max sequel "The Road Warrior."

Gibson has since gone on to make a mix of crowd-pleasing shoot-'em-ups such as the "Lethal Weapon" franchise, and has established himself as a director. 1995's "Braveheart" earned Gibson two Oscars for best picture and best director. He also produced and directed the blockbuster "The Passion of the Christ."

Gibson pleaded no contest to the July 2006 drunken driving charge later that year and was given three years' probation.

Since then, he has hosted Britney Spears at his home in Costa Rica, and continued his acting career. He stars in "Edge of Darkness," scheduled for release later this year.

Mel is handsome, witty and warped. He is reaping what he sowed.

I like Mel. I believe that he will grow from his mistakes and eventually produce more good stuff, not action hero miracles but deep, edgy confrontational moral struggles, which is where he lives and of which he can authentically speak.

Mel even Jesus didn't suffer as much as you will once the divorce lawyers crucify you.

They make those Roman soldiers look like puppy dogs.

As a Women who has been married to the same man 27 years, I would never get a divorce. Too much at stake. I would not live in the same house with him. Especially if he is still drinking, but I would not divorce him. I would just live my life and enjoy my children and grand-children and let time and God take care of Mel! Why take half of everything when you could end up with all of it in time. I'm sure that she is not looking to get married again.

I knew this thread would be filled with hate ..... but let's have some full disclosure...

I'll go first...

I love Mel Gibson. I think the same things he does about a certain minority who shall remain nameless [but all powerful around here]

And I am NOT a member of that minority....

next?

uh, next?

no takers?

Dontcha just love anonymous hives pretending to be individuals?

Wow, some of the comments in this section reminded me why I stay clear of organized religion. Too many either forget or never read James 4:12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge-the one who can save and destroy. So who are you to judge your neighbor?

I find it sad that a person like myself who recognizes the bible as stories of Mythology. Values and takes heed of the lessons those stories teach us more so than many who are so devoult in their religious beliefs. No one is perfect. Mel is no exception but he must learn to live with his mistakes and hopefully learn from them. I sure have no right to cast the first stone at anothers failings. Shame I seem to be one of few rather than many.

Oh my, what would the Pope say?

Oh that's right, he's off telling Africans that condoms are a sin.

She deserves at least half of what he is worth, for sticking with him for so long despite all of him problems

We have no idea what she is like, either. She may have been a complete terror.

And he's catholic. They can't get divorced. Well, I hope he gets either a catholic or jewish judge in divorce court.

Wow, one bad night really has turned people against ol' Mel. He's still a good actor, a decent director, and a pretty powerful presence in the industry. So the wife filed papers after a few years of separation? Maybe she finally found someone else. I don't really see why this is such a big story. No big, obvious affair, no obvious physical abuse. Maybe they're getting divorced for the same reason many of you critics did, you just can't live with each other anymore. It happens. It's sad. Let it go.

Gibson was a beautiful young man whose father's prejudices he accepted and whose success ruined him, with his quite willing help.
Adultery and alcohol will eventually destroy any marriage. I think his wife stayed with him a lot longer than most would, but there's just no saving him from himself and his hurt to her.

This is going to cost him. Mel, I see Mad Max IV and Lethal Weapon VI(?) and VII and VIII in your future.

I just don't think there's any man sexier than Mel Gibson walking down that desolated road wearing his leather pants and leather jacket.
