Somali Pirates RETALIATION Against U.S. Vowed

Somali Pirates Retaliation

MOMBASA, Kenya — President Barack Obama vowed Monday "to halt the rise of piracy," while shipmates of the rescued American freighter captain called for tough action against Somali bandits who are preying on one of the world's busiest sea routes.

Obama appeared to move up the piracy issue on his agenda, saying the United States would work with nations elsewhere in the world.

"I want to be very clear that we are resolved to halt the rise of piracy in that region and to achieve that goal, we're going to have to continue to work with our partners to prevent future attacks," Obama said at a Washington news conference.

The nighttime rescue operation of Richard Phillips won praise abroad but it was uncertain how far Obama wanted to go to engage the pirates.

The U.S. was considering options including adding Navy gunships along the Somali coastline and launching a campaign to disable pirate "mother ships," according to military officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because no decisions have been made.

Some military strategists believe it may ultimately be necessary to attack the pirates' bases on land in Somalia. But few international allies have the appetite for another land operation in Somalia, where a U.S. military foray in the early 1990s ended in humiliation. And the cost in civilian casualties would likely be extremely high, some warn.

"That would be nuts," said Larry Johnson, a former CIA agent and State Department counterterrorism specialist. "These people are not organized into any military force, they are intermingled with women and children. You're talking about wiping out villages."

The chief mate aboard the US-flagged Maersk Alabama was among those urging strong U.S. action.

"It's time for us to step in and put an end to this crisis," Shane Murphy said. "It's a crisis. Wake up."

In Burlington, Vt., Phillips' wife, Andrea Phillips made a tearful public appearance, her first since the Sunday rescue of her husband. She thanked Obama, who approved the dramatic sniper operation that killed the pirates holding him.

"You have no idea, but with Richard saved, you all just gave me the best Easter ever," she said in a statement read by the family's spokeswoman.

On the other side of the world, the 19 crew members on the Alabama celebrated their skipper's freedom with beer and an evening barbecue in an area cordoned off from journalists, said crewman Ken Quinn, who ventured out holding a Tusker beer _ a popular brew in Kenya, where the ship was docked.

New details emerged Monday about the standoff.

Fearing the pirates' lifeboat was approaching the Somali shore, where they could escape, the Bainbridge rammed it back out toward sea, said a spokesman for Vice Adm. Bill Gortney, commander of the Navy's Fifth Fleet. That happened before the Bainbridge put a tow line on the lifeboat to help it navigate the choppy sea.

The four pirates that attacked the Alabama were between 17 and 19 years old, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said.

"Untrained teenagers with heavy weapons," Gates told a group of students and faculty at the Marine Corps War College. "Everybody in the room knows the consequences of that."

U.S. officials were now considering whether to bring the fourth pirate, who surrendered shortly before the sniper shootings, to the United States or possibly turn him over to Kenya. If he is brought to the U.S., he'd most likely be put on trial in New York or Washington.

Both piracy and hostage-taking carry life prison sentences under U.S. law.

That pirate had surrendered to seek medical attention. He was stabbed with an ice pick during a scuffle with the crew when the pirates initially tried to overtake the Alabama, a senior military official said.

The American ship had been carrying food aid bound for Rwanda, Somalia and Uganda when the ordeal began Wednesday hundreds of miles off Somalia's eastern coast. As the pirates clambered aboard and shot in the air, Phillips told his crew to lock themselves in a cabin and surrendered himself to safeguard his men.

Phillips was then taken hostage in an enclosed lifeboat that was soon shadowed by three U.S. warships and a helicopter. Navy SEAL snipers parachuted from their aircraft into the sea, and were picked up by the USS Bainbridge, a senior U.S. official said.

U.S. Defense officials said snipers got the go-ahead to fire after one pirate held an AK-47 close to Phillips' back. The military officials asked not to be named because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the case.

Snipers killed three pirates with single shots shortly after sailors on the Bainbridge saw the hostage-takers "with their heads and shoulders exposed," Gortney said.

It was not immediately known when or how Phillips would return home.

Pirates hold some 230 foreign sailors still held hostage in more than a dozen ships anchored off lawless Somalia.

Vilma de Guzman worried about her husband, one of 23 Filipino sailors held hostage since Nov. 10 on the chemical tanker MT Stolt Strength.

"The pirates might vent their anger on them," she said. "Those released are lucky, but what about those who remain captive?"

Maybe Obama could stroll into Mogadishu and just talk with them, since he seems to think that always works.

Vows retaliation. Ya right the mice that roar. Like it was all in fun but the US didn't play fare so now we are going to wreak havoc on American seamen. Uh huh, let the shipping company's put Black Water security units on their ships and the "Pirates" will cop a whole new attitude.

It's time we carpet-bomb Somalia. This anarchic "country" has been lawless for the past 20 years and only succeeds at being a danger to the rest of the world. Let's get rid of it and return it to dust.

It might be more productive to try to figure out why these people are resorting to piracy.

Yes, piracy is an act of force and an international crime. As such, it has to be immediately countered by "sufficient force," which is both bigger and smarter than the force available to the pirates. But piracy is also often an act of desperation. We should not overlook reasonable chances to try to help with the causes of that desperation.

Hook. They took Americans.

Line. We will be fed the line that they are somehow affiliated with Al Qaeda or "want our freedom" for some reason.

Sinker. It's already hit the silly democrat vs.republican "I know you are but what am I" memeplex with one side saying that he (Obama) didn't act fast enough and the other saying that the other side really wished for the captain to be killed therefore being able to wave it in the face of Obama when the time comes while acting in the right amount of time. Of course neither "side" really looking into the series of events leading up to this. Both sides drunk on Hollywood-derived swash buckling action.

End result? Probably some sort of invasion, US invasion, of the pirates' bases or hovels causing a multi-year occupation with various US contractors (non-bid) "rebuilding" the country while oil speculators speculate and mineral speculators do the same and water is shipped elsewhere. They will install a new government which will at first be thankful to be allowed by the US to govern (rule) and act accordingly, but will eventually ask the US to leave. The US will say sure, we'll leave but keep putting off the date, as infinitum.

Obama doesn't work that way.

A much more simple end result would be to put a few armed troops on each US ship (cheaper than armed escort boats). Maybe even have decoy ships with only armed troops aboard. If pirates attack, arrest them or blow them out of the water. That way, it is much cheaper than occupation and there can be no civilian casualties.

The second part of the solution would be to address the real problems that exist, lack of central government, dumping of waste, and unauthorized access to Somali waters. The US and UN could even provide peacekeeping patrols of Somali waters that prevent unauthorized access AND prevent piracy.

They'll be back. Only this time they'll have Davey Jones' heart in a chest with them. Be afraid.

I don't want to see Somali pirates on Lake Michigan. Blow 'em up.

I don't know about that. You might set fire to Lake Michigan.

Killing the hostages wouldn't make any sense - if they kill them, there's no reason to pay and that's the motivation here.

I understand that the ships can't be armed but what about water cannon? Sink the pirate boats before they reach the ship.

Why cant they be armed?
12:31 PM on 04/13/2009
So, instead of paying ransom to these pirates, why not hire some out-of-work Blackwater goons? If provoked by pirates, the vigilantes will know what to do. Beats getting hijacked and paying ransom.

There seems to be a consistent enthusiasm for kil ling all the pirates.

While that reflex is perhaps satisfying, it is not terribly civilized nor very practical.

These chuckleheads are not engaged in this very risky criminal behaviour without reason.

The fact is that there is no legitimate way to earn a living in Somalia. And I mean "living" literally. People are starving to dea th all over the country.

Kil ling a few dozen pirates will result in new pirates.

I'm not suggesting that we take anything but a hard line. But the idea of extermination is just too simplistic for discussion.

I admire your cocktail party logic. I don't have enough money. Where did I put my gun?
12:41 PM on 04/13/2009
Your position is naive if not ignorant. I'm certain that they are engaged in it for what they believe to be good reason. There's no way however that that should discount the very real threat they pose to innocent people.
They weren't asking for global recognition of their countries economic hardships, or their inability to install a fair and just government. They were asking for money and were prepared to take someone's life if they didn't get it.
There's little evidence that killing pirates will result in more piracy. I actually believe the opposite to be true. What's money if your not alive to spend it.
And where negotiation's are concerned, your counterpart has to understand the full extent of your power and willingness to use it. Which I believe they understand better now then they ever did.
What do you think would become of the country if these pirates were actually given the two million dollars and set free. Do you, in your infinite wisdom, foresee a country of financially distraught individuals saying "We'll give up the whole piracy game altogether now that we got that 2 million"??
12:54 PM on 04/13/2009
There's more of a threat to innocent people in Compton or Oakland.

It goes on every day here, but I don't see anyone getting this upset about it...

Somalia - a failed state.

Desparate people who have a knack for stealing ships.

Now the US has raised the stakes.

What is the pirate's next move?

Yes, I am sure those pirates have Bin Laden somewhere in their roledex, and if not they can always ask McCain, remember he knows where to find him.......

And didn't we all know that this was coming? Good old Jamel (if he exists at all) could be counted on for a headline worthy quote.

What's next? Pirates hook up with Al Qaeda? Watch for it--whether it's real or not...

"What's next? Pirates hook up with Al Qaeda? " Yes. An Al Qaeda cell was reported Somalia seven years ago.

Hmmm, and some 47% of Americans still believe that Iraq had something to do with 911. Just goes to show you that when our leaders need a nice little story to take our eye off the ball (destroyed economy, 2 wars still raging) they can come up with the same sorts of lies, innuendo and half truths (uranium tubes, WMD's etc...) that appeal to our worst nature.

Look at the blood lust here. This is the place where the powerless--most Americans these days--can scream and cry for vengeance and feel that Something is being done! And the corporate MSM is more than happy to bang the drum for them to march to.

This, while the Wall Street Criminals and their plants in our government continue to steal those same fools blind. Works every time.

Al Qaida has been in Somolia for a decade now. They have been one of the forces fighting against the Ethiopians. The recently released videos of American accented terrorists in Somalia fighting the Ethiopian Army for Al Qaida proves it.

Al Qaida views Somalia as another safe haven when Pakistan gets too hot in the next couple of years.

The last time I checked, Somalia was in Africa. The MSM could do us a favor and report on the position of the African Union on the nn-governance of Somalia. Africa should be allowed to weigh in on some of these contentious issues and their views made known. That is what I would call fair and balanced reporting. I understand the immediate need to save lives, but in the intermediate and long term, we need to know how the continent of Africa plans to deal with violence on her shores.
