President Barack Obama and his family have welcomed their new dog Bo to the White House, and they're showing him off around the grounds.

The 6-month-old Portuguese water dog made his debut Tuesday afternoon in front of reporters and photographers. And the Obamas even walked him over near the fence on the White House South Lawn.

"I finally got a friend," President Obama joked.

Said the president: "He's got star quality."

First lady Michelle Obama did most of the walking, with Bo on a leash. But daughter Malia took a turn, too, as Bo took off running. "I love him, he's perfect," she said.

Watch video of Bo's arrival:

UPDATE: The White House has released its first Bo video. Take a look:

Well, finally! As a dog lover from a family of crazy dog lovers (the dog is always the HEAD of our household), these are beautiful images. But these folks are NOT dog people. When you have a new puppy you can't stop kissing it and holding it, not pet it at arm's length. And when Obama said "not in my bed" -- well, that's a major faux PAW. He has some work to do. I 'm excited about Bo but I think he's just a political prop.

This is the Obama Family's first dog. The media may have scared Bo, and the attention was not publicly lavished on him. Bo is not a prop. I agree as a dog lover-they rule!

Oh my goodness are there enough reporters there? Goodness guys!

Aw, Bo's adorable! I felt a little sorry for Sasha though - it seemed like everybody got a chance to take Bo's leash but her. OK, she's little, but I bet she was grinding her teeth - "it's my turn"!

That dog would have flown her like a kite! Maybe after he's been heel-trained.

I love this puppy!

Is anyone else concerned by the fact that Obama seemed pissed with the idea that there was a huge mob of reporters watching his family HANG OUT? This dog got more attention than the Madoff scandal.

No way. I think he was having as much fun as everyone else.

Reporters don't just 'show up' like that. They were invited.

The reveal was so cute. The President saying as if surprised by the press coverage "there's too many people around" after the First Lady said she was trying to get Bo to focus. OMG...Mr. President did you expect only 2 reporters to cover the first sighting of the First Dog. Come on... That was hysterical.

Then the other clip that was so precious was when a reporter asked if Bo would be sleeping in a bed.
The President quickly answered "not in my bed." I nearly cracked a rib. I love it...he has such a quick wit.

Overall it was cute. Started kinda shaky with Bo pulling Malia across the south lawn and reporters getting a view of the tail end of Bo with his face hidden.

But if you see the online photos of Bo pulling the President along and running ahead of Malia it is adorable.

I actually heard someone whine that the President didn't pick out an "american" dog.

Are people really so stupid? I guess they think german shepherds are all flown in from germany?

When will we see the campaign to change the name to Freedom Water Dogs?

The "American" dog complaint - wasn't that a joke clip? I heard it on Letterman and e-mailed a friend "this is what hate radio will be saying tomorrow!" Please, it had to be a joke.

Cute dog! One of the best lookin PWD I've every seen. I Hope they enjoy Bo for many years to come and really work at his training because that breed's energy is intense!

Beautiful dog. I love those fluffy white forepaws. Bo reminds me of a childhood dog I had when I was twelve. Rex was not a water dog, but he was black with white forepaws, a white streak that ran the length of his face and muzzle, and a white-tipped bushy tail,

I love dogs! Two Goldens so far in my life and I don't think I'll ever stop. One question though, why don't they let go of his leash once he's away from the reporters? Bo's never going to behave without first burning off some of that energy :-)

That dog is beautiful. That family is beautiful. That dog clearly needs to run! Why can't Michelle let him off leash and throw a ball? That is the wrong breed to keep on leash an in the house!

with all those people there that may frighten him, this was not the time to let him off the leash.

If they had let him off the leash you know you'd be hearing from all the right wing pundits about how the Obamas can't even control their own dog.
