Obama

In his speech at Georgetown University Tuesday, President Obama used a Biblical reference to explain his comprehensive economic policy.

"We cannot rebuild this economy on the same pile of sand," he said, invoking Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. "We must build our house upon a rock. We must lay a new foundation for growth and prosperity a foundation that will move us from an era of borrow and spend to one where we save and invest, where we consume less at home and send more exports abroad."

In his sermon, Jesus admonished listeners, "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand." (Matthew 7:24-26, New International Version)

It's not the first time Obama has invoked the Bible. In his inaugural speech, the president said, "We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things." It's a reference to Corinthians (King James version): "When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things."

But wait, isn't he a communist, and aren't they atheists? I'm so confused, he seems to be so many things!

No, no, no ... he's a socialist ... no wait, he's not a US citizen ... I'm so confused too!

That's my biggest problem with Obama...he doesn't appear to know what he is. By trying to appeal to everybody he really stands for nothing.

I loved Obama reference. The ones who opposed it, or have an issue get a life. Lighten up. He is driving home a point. I believe in separation of church and state. Obama is closer to Jesus than any right winged hate-filled Republican. I say he can walk on water, turn water into wine and heal this country. That sentence should piss off a few right wingers. Go OBAMA

If Bush had made any references such as this one, he would be crucified all those who are saying nothing about BOs references to scripture.

Pretty amusing.

Do not like seeing anyone using such analogies/refs in political speeches/discourse.

BO is being rediculous with such statements.

I doon't remember Bush making a speech with any historical or literary references. Somehow, I just can't picture it.

What's ridiculous? The Bible is a work of literature as well as religion. The house built upon the sand and the house built upon the rock is one of the best-known metaphors from the New Testament. It completely sums up what Obama is trying to do--build a strong foundation and structure that will last.

Note that Obama in this speech is not calling on God, praying, or saying his plan is blessed, etc., except for the obligatory "God bless the United States" at the end. Instead, he is using a familiar image to make a secular argument.

This is no more religious than YOU saying that Bush "would be crucified." I'm sure you were simply making a point using vivid Biblical imagery, not actually comparing Bush to Jesus Christ. Same thing here, just a better writer.

Don't know where you were the last 8 years, but Bush always made some smarmy inauthentic scriptural reference that came across as insincere.

The Warren Report II - This one could save our country. Elizabeth Warren, Chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel, has put together a report that should be the number one topic of main stream media. This is the finest document produced to date on TARP, TALF and all of the shenanigans going on throughout the Financial Crisis. She tells is like it is, and she exposes the details of the current financial crisis that everyone else is sweeping under the rug. Ms. Warren also tells us what we need to do, based on realistic analysis of what worked and what didn't during the Great Depression, in Sweden, in Japan and more.

Geithner continues to refuse to cooperate.

Even if you're not a christian there are many good parables and stories in the bible with lessons that can be taken and applied to many things. He's entitled to use whatever metaphors he thinks are apt to get his point across.

I believe that is the purpose of the Bible - not to be taken literally, but as a guide for living and spirituality. The Evangelicals will kill me now.

The President's message is truth to power. Everyone understands the import of the message: we need to build our economy on the rock foundation of regulation and enforcement. We are encouraged to make all the money that we can in the free market, but not by shady means. It's a simple message, but timely and true nonetheless. President Obama is a man of many facets and each one is impressive. We made a great decision when we elected President Obama as our President!

Come on GOP, its time to put away childish things. You've been going at this throw it on the wall and hope it sticks approach for way too long. It's about time you actually started doing some real work to improve the lives of the American people; remember-- your jobs; which might I add isn't a game, now get to work, not politicing but actual work.

Love the new foundation rock vs the washed away sands reference.

Wait a minute! You trash him for being a Muslim and rejecting Christianity. Yet, throughout his career, he gave homage to Jesus and attempt to be Christ-like...as instructed by our various pastors. Now you want to trash him for being the Messiah. He hasn't change...so what's the deal? Make up your confused mind.
