The race for 1 million followers on Twitter is on: In one corner is CNN; in the other, Ashton Kutcher.

Just a few weeks ago, no one was close to reaching that benchmark. Now, as users have flocked to the increasingly popular microblogging site, the numbers have grown.

CNN's breaking news feed () is in the lead with more than 945,000 followers as of late Wednesday. Britney Spears and Kutcher were neck-and-neck in second, both with around 910,000 followers. http://www.twitter.com/cnnbrk

Kutcher () has seen his followers increase by tens of thousands in the last day. http://www.twitter.com/aplusk

The 31-year-old actor recently threw down the gauntlet, challenging CNN and its founder, Ted Turner. In a Web video posted earlier this week, Kutcher said he would ding-dong-ditch Turner's house if he beat CNN to 1 million. (For those unfamiliar with the classic adolescent prank, ding-dong-ditch is when you ring someone's doorbell and run away.)

"I find it astonishing that one person can actually have as big of a voice online as what an entire media company can on Twitter," Kutcher said in a video he posted on qik.com. "I just thought that was kind of an amazing comment on the state of our media."

Kutcher later promised a "Guitar Hero" video game to his millionth follower, before quickly realizing it would be difficult to identify such a person.

In postings on Twitter, Kutcher said he was fielding interview requests, including one from CNN's Larry King. He was mulling the offers and claiming it was a "saga for the Internet," not TV.

Not to be outdone, King posted a video on YouTube boasting the wrath of his company and sounding a lot like Ned Beatty's TV network chairman in the 1976 film "Network."

Said King: "Are you kidding? Do you think you can take on an entire network? Do you know how big we are? Do you know what CNN is? Kutcher, you're playing out of your field. You're in another time zone. This ain't gonna work. CNN will bury you!"

CNN, which is owned by Time Warner Inc., didn't have a comment Wednesday. Spokespeople for Twitter didn't return a request for comment.

The CNN breaking news Twitter feed was only recently taken over by the network. A spokeswoman for the network said CNN purchased the address in recent days from the previous owner James Cox.

Cox had been maintaining it himself despite having no official affiliation with CNN. The network said they have been working in partnership with the self-professed news junkie for months.

Both Kutcher and his wife, actress Demi Moore, are popular Twitter users. Kutcher, in particular, is an avid poster of tweets _ messages that must be 140 characters or less.

Earlier this month, Internet traffic analyst comScore reported that monthly unique visitors to the site reached 4 million in February, up more than 1,000 percent from a year ago.

Though its numbers aren't up-to-the-minute, the site ranks the most popular profiles on Twitter. http://twitterholic.com

And if you're wondering who's in fourth, the Twitter feed for Ellen DeGeneres and her talk show, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," is trailing with about 800,000 followers _ a number large enough to dance about, at least.

ASHTON WON!!! ASHTON WON!!!

But what iss the meaning of this victory to the marketing world? What did it prove?

In a single word, Transformation. This was the defining moment of how the internet won over the television. It is, as Ashton said, “A changing of the guard…from the old way of consuming media to the new way of consuming media.”

So, how is this transforming? As Ashton said “The new wave is here…We get to choose what we want to see and don’t want to see and who we want to have broadcast.” It no longer resides with the big companies, “the Giants” forcing you to watch endless commercials, listening to their points of view, or buying into their ideology.

It’s remarkable that a multinational news organization would compete with a single man and lose. It’s ironic that they would tell their viewers to go to the web. The very medium which will one day replace CNN.

Will the marketing world wake up? I don’t know. But if they are steadfast in their resolve that the television will continue to be their best channel, then they will go out the same way that the newspapers and print media are going out today…a slow and agonizing death.

Congratulations Ashton and thank you for your efforts to rid the world of Malaria. Thank you also for the clarity of this message: the world has truly gone to the web.

Why is this guy famous again? What exactly has he contributed to the history of the arts and film? Who wants to know what an uneducated maladroit is doing on a daily basis.

Twitter is no longer cool.

Not sure if it ever really was as I've never used it but it certainly isn't cool at present.

twitter is the zaniest idea to come around in a while. Watch and see in a couple of years VH1 will be doing a segment on Twitter during the "2009" year. It's the def. of people like this clown who would want to hear about what he has to say about the most mundane things he goes through a day. 100% Narcissistic, self-absorbed, whatever.

Ashton, you're gorgeous, but that hat ruins the whole effect.

I have never twittered.

First, he promised to "Ding-Dong-Ditch" Ted Turner's house if he got to a million first. Then, being the generous, social-minded human being that he is, offered to donate 1,000 net beds through Malaria No More. Now, not only will Ashton Kutcher make his donation regardless of the outcome of the race, everyone has a chance to make a difference, even those who don't use Twitter. A T-Shirt design is available at http://www.cafepress.com/bekajoth and 50% of the profits from every sale will be donated to Malaria No More. If every user purchases one shirt, it will raise at least $2 Million Dollars for a great cause.
