Faced with rising numbers of complaints to city information lines and increasingly frustrated landlords, hotel chains and housing authorities, the Environmental Protection Agency hosted its first-ever bedbug summit Tuesday.

DDT was the answer to bedbugs.

Contrary to what most people think, DDT is NOT toxic to humans. It was banned for causing reprodutive problems with birds --- fragile eggshells. One study I recall even showed better health of humans exposed to it, within the limits of error of the study, meaning....it didn't make them healthier but they were healthier for other reasons, indicating the DDT clearly didn't have any detrimental fx.

I've volunteered at a thrift store where they sell used mattresses. I've tried to figure out what could be used to sterilize them. Would, for instance, leaving them outside in sub freezing weather do the job?

Could they build a "gas chamber" and kill them with carbon monoxide or a nitrogen purge?

One after another hotel in our little tourist town (and surrounding, like Mesa Verde) has been infested. A good solution is needed. Tourists REALLY don't like them!

Oh and since this article is pretty much useless in terms of conveying usable information, get rid of your softside luggage which can pick up bedbugs in airport luggage systems. Go back to the old Samsonite hardside stuff to avoid problems.
