AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry fired up an anti-tax "tea party" Wednesday with his stance against the federal government and for states' rights as some in his U.S. flag-waving audience shouted, "Secede!"

An animated Perry told the crowd at Austin City Hall -- one of three tea parties he was attending across the state -- that officials in Washington have abandoned the country's founding principles of limited government. He said the federal government is strangling Americans with taxation, spending and debt.

Perry repeated his running theme that Texas' economy is in relatively good shape compared with other states and with the "federal budget mess." Many in the crowd held signs deriding President Barack Obama and the $786 billion federal economic stimulus package.

Perry called his supporters patriots. Later, answering news reporters' questions, Perry suggested Texans might at some point get so fed up they would want to secede from the union, though he said he sees no reason why Texas should do that.

"There's a lot of different scenarios," Perry said. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."

He said when Texas entered the union in 1845 it was with the understanding it could pull out. However, according to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, Texas negotiated the power to divide into four additional states at some point if it wanted to but not the right to secede.

Story continues below

Texas did secede in 1861, but the North's victory in the Civil War put an end to that.

Perry is running for re-election against U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, a fellow Republican. His anti-Washington remarks have become more strident the past few weeks as that 2010 race gets going and since Perry rejected $550 million in federal economic stimulus money slated to help Texas' unemployment trust fund.

Perry said the stimulus money would come with strings attached that would leave Texas paying the bill once the federal money ran out.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, also Republicans, have been outspoken against the federal economic stimulus spending and were supportive of tea parties in their states. The protests were being held throughout the country on federal income tax deadline day to imitate the original Boston Tea Party of American revolutionary times.

In an appearance at the Texas Capitol last week, Perry joined state lawmakers in pushing a resolution that supports states' rights protected in the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. He said the federal government has become oppressive in its size and interference with states.

Since then, Perry has been featured on the online Drudge Report, and other conservative commentators and citizens have latched on to his words.

After praising veterans in the cheering crowd Wednesday, he said: "I'm just not real sure you're a bunch of right-wing extremists. But if you are, we're with you."

Perry said he believes he could be at the center of a national movement that is coordinated and focused in its opposition to the actions of the federal government.

"It's a very organic thing," he said. "It is a very powerful moment, I think, in American history."

For her part, Hutchison issued a newspaper opinion piece Wednesday criticizing the Democratic-led Congress for spending on the stimulus bill and the $1 trillion appropriations bill.

"On April 15 -- Tax Day -- some in Congress may need a reminder of just who is underwriting this spending: the American taxpayer. I am deeply concerned over the swelling tax burden that will be imposed on all Texas families," she wrote.

The crowd at the Austin tea party appeared to be decidedly anti-Democrat. Many of the speakers were Republicans and Libertarians.

One placard said, "Stop Obama's Socialism." Another read, "Some Pirates Are in America," and it showed photographs of Obama, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wearing pirate hats.

Rebecca Knowlton, 45, of Smithville, said she took the day off of home-schooling her three children and brought them to the rally to teach them about civic duty. Knowlton, a critic of the Social Security system and the United Nations, said she felt camaraderie at the demonstration.

"The movement is growing stronger," she said. "You're not alone."

TEXAS GOV PERRY HAS GONE LOCO AND IS DECLARING DEMOCRATS,
HALF THE COUNTRY, SOCIALISTS.

Our mental midget Gov Rick Perry is reportedly working with his confederate Republicans to declare Democrats to be "socialists." That is right, half the country is socialist and the rest be better afraid, very afraid. Rick is mad as hell and he is not going to take it any more.He has been under increasing paranoia since someone burned down the Governor's Mansion in Austin and he can't live there. I should mention that some one else also burned down George Bush's hometown old house. A lot of mean hombres down here.

STOP MAKING SENSE!

"yOU MAY ASK YOURSELF, WHO BURNED DOWN MY BEAUTIFUL HOUSE, IS THIS BE MY BEAUTIFUL WIFE, HOW DID I GET HERE? INTO THE BLUE AGAIN. AFTER THE MONEYS GONE....
(David Byrne's lyrics, Once in a Lifetime.)

LMAO, this is all too funny. An EX-Military man says he wants to shed blood in Texas. What Perry said was treason? Guess again, the fact is that the STATES make up this GREAT country not the other way around. Everyone is acting like all Texan's want to secede, but we all don't. Being ex military I would have guessed you would believe in peoples rights that you fought for, like the right to bear arms, among others. Hell for all we know your nothing more than an poser..... I DONT WANT TO LEAVE THE UNION and look at Perry's comments again, he never said were going to, nor did he say were are trying to pass some laws that make this possible. He stated that if STATES RIGHTS are going to keep being infringed upon then action would have to be taken, if you think going to war here would be fun think again you anal clown. Hell on the other hand we could see just how many of you people want to really try and live it out and see if you are really going to have any fun. Maybe a REAL LIVE AMMO war game is what ya'll need. Also Proshot, you talk of a place in hell that's reserved for TRAITOR's, what about you not actually standing for the Constitution when it's being walked on EVEN BY THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION?????

According to proshot, America shouldn't exist, or did you forget? America breaking away from Britain WAS TREASON! If you look back at the founding fathers, they said that if the American people saw something wrong with their government, it was their duty to take action against it. Thomas Jefferson even believed it would be a good idea to have a revolution every twenty years. Also if you truly were in the military you would understand, if Texas did secede and the president tried to use force to oppose Texas, many souther states would secede. THe military would therefore be split, why would a soldier choose to fight his own friends and family? He wouldn't the President knows that ordering the military to fight their own American people would sign his death warrant. (So to speak, not litteraly) Infact just to prove my point, the founding fathers intended for states to be able to secede if they wanted. Ex. The supreme court ruling after the civil war was that, MY GOD, IT WAS LEGAL. Also that Lincoln was infact, going against the law by forcing the souther states to remain in the union.

I am also a Texan, and if the federal government wants to keep going in their suffocation of states rights, secede! You want to come down here and fight, then we will fight on our home ground, and even fight a guerilla war or a war of attrition if need be.

What kind of Americans openly states that they want to secede from the United States? These cowards are no more then traitors to the United States. I didn't serve in the military and shed blood for these dogs who say they represent America and want to secede because now their political party is no longer in control in Washington. Real Americans don't secede from your country. You stay by your country until you die. You work to build this country better.

The military code of justice has the right remedy for treason. Those that want to secede are traitors and the lowest circle in Hell is reserved for traitors. This rhetoric goes way beyond free speech. They want to secede, let them. Then have the Commander In Chief, President Obama, call up the US Army. We beat them once, we can surely beat them again. I'll be more then happy to shed some blood again to cut down the weeds in Texas.

God Bless the United States of America.

Excuse me, but the states have no inherent duty to remain in the "union" if the federal government is abridging the Constitution and not abiding by its terms. Which it is clear they are not at this point, nor have been for about 100 years now. Since Wilson's treason, actually, and that Administration which is what has lead us to where we are today. We the federal government "recreating" and amending the Constitution independently without any representation of the states or citizens, but those politicians fealty and loyalty now to their own political careers.

I am a Republican. I live in Texas by choice, not birth. I have served my nation as an Infantryman in the Army of The United States of America. I do not support Big Government or excessive taxes, but I would never speak anything as treasonus as what Rick Perry said. This is THE UNITED STATES, the year is 2009, not 1861!!! Bottom Line!!

They are the ones in "breach of contract," so if the contract has been blatantly breached as it has, the states all have more than the right to secede, they have the duty to hold the federal government to its proscribed duties and functions. And the Civil War was over a slavery issue behind those "states rights" war, and slavery was a matter of contention by many during the original Convention, and it was the founders intent that such a practice would eventually be eliminated at the state levels in accordance with the recognizing that equality in men being created equal knew no color.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:13 PM on 05/10/2009

@ Ross, sorry but the civil war was NOT over slavery. Slavery was not used until 1862 towards the end of that year, used only for recruiting. Infact Lincoln's position was actually for sending all slaves back to Africa. As for the states, importation of slaves was outlawed in the very early 1800's (Before 1820). Also I am indeed against slavery just stating.

@Dan The founding fathers also tried to preserve states rights as much as possible, hence the articles of confederation, therfore the states seceding is not treason. The states do NOT serve the Federal government, the government serve the states. So if a state chooses to secede, how is that treason?

Texas does not belong to the Governor, he is only a temp. The citizens of Texas who do not want to give allegiance to the United States of America are free to leave our boundaries, if they aren't felons under indictment or in prison. They do not have the right to take the property, which under Eminent Domain belongs to the Federal Government. This man is arrogant, certainly, but he is obviously not proud of our great heritage as nation, otherwise he would not be threatening to become our enemy. The white lone star against the bonnie blue field on the Texas flag isn't there to encourage treason among its population who are citizens of the United States of America.

This is clearly different. We are now living under corporatism and socialism, not the government created by the founders in the slightest. And bailed out not simply a United States corporate interest, but a global one - and those banks were never bankrupt, it was simply a Fed move in order to place us further into their debt - a foreign held bank that is manipulating this government and our economy.

im against gay marriage, but i would back every gay person in taking away the rights of the federal government and then they WOULD BE FREE TO GET MARRIED!!!!!!!!!!!bailouts suck, let them go under and free market would fix the problems that we are having. as far a texas seceding, do yall remember this thing we celebrate on July 4th??? that wasnt legal either according to england. so it can be done, BUT let me make this clear---> my priorities are 1st FAMILY 2nd STATE and 3rd COUNTRY. the states make up the COUNTRY! may we all be neighbors forever, i hope and pray this stays calm, but if not and you think your just going to invade and RULE us think about this - I'd Rather Be Dead and Cool than Alive and Uncool. that meaning were all free and I would defend your rights the same as mine. if anyone here thinks another cival war would be fun and you would just come down here and dominate, think again....

Do you realize that prior to this century, no one needed "permission" for either the state or federal government to get married - and that it was the common law that determined such matters, since marriages were simply conducted by the church and those marriages then simply logged in the court records? That there was no "licenses' at all needed, since this is a private matter in which government at either level has any "right" to determine really, other than recording the documents for inheritance purposes - which is what state regulation than was instituted really in order to do, simply insure a public declaration for inheritance purposes.

The entire gay marriage issue is ridiculous actually, since there are no "privileges" now in this country with respect to marriage since no fault divorce laws have been enacted in most states, and rights of inheitance and other issues can be simply solved with powers of attorneys, joint ownership provisions, "head of household" options, and adoption papers.

The entire movement in "inviting in" the government to your personal relationship seems the gays are cutting of their noses now to spite their face. And will regret it when the state gets involved in the divorces.

And the only ones who will profit from that entire movement will be the domestic relations attorneys, states for the "license" fees, and the taxpayers will end up picking up the costs for all those eventual divorces in more judges and courts needed if only a third of them divorce - which most likely will be far greater since the divorce rates now for traditional marriages due to those no fault divorce laws is no over 50%

The federal government has no right to 'marry' anyone. Marriage is actually a term coined by the Jewish religion, Christiand and Muslims. The term means a spiritual connection officially santioned to the community BY THE CHURCH. If the church doesn't want to give that to people because they take it to where it conflicts with that religion and people try to force that, it is infact forcing their religion on others, which isn't that what they are claiming they are doing when infact is the exact opposite? I agree that, if they want, they can live together, however, i feel that my right to religion is invaded by gay people trying to force my religion to allow them to marry under traditional marriage circumstances.

Ok, let Perry the unpatriotic secede. Then the US will invade Texas, overthrow monarch Perry and establish a real democracy and free the people suffering under neocon corruption. Texas or whatever the United States chooses to call it can be be made into an egalitarian democracy without Perry's pathetic hubris and attention getting at the cost of Kay.

Nothing Perry, the ignorant fundie nut job, does surprises me. He keeps getting re-elected because we had too many candidates on the ballot. Then what does he do? He appoints a creationist to head the Texas Board of Education.

I love Texas and I am sick and tired of a few religious fanatics controling my government. I have seen legislation pass that defined bigotry and denied gay marriage. One fundie wanted to ban all books written by gay authors from school libraries. I have seen them trying to teach my son is school that "Satan planted those fossils." NO ONE IS GOING TO DUMB DOWN MY SON IN SCHOOL.

The fundie neo-cons focus on Obama's birth certificate, the teleprompter, and Michelle's arms. While the rest of us, and our intelligent President, are focusing on the economy, ending the war, and finding health care for children.

All Americans must stand up and be counted. We allowed the ignorance and bigotry of fundamentalism to infect our government for 3 decades. There can be no more hinderance in the education of our children, life saving research, and the civil rights all Americans. We must be vigilant and vote all the ignorant Christian fundie out of our government once and for all.

LMAO the government is controlling you before long. if you think we have any control or say think again, even bush was ignorant in many aspects of the good of the country. reagan was the last great one, he actually believed in limited government, they should deal with other countries and just try and head the public in the right direction and hope we made good choices, but your obama is going to try and controll everything, like PRIVATE COLLEGE LOANS, CARBON TAX (which will kill small business owners like myself, stupidity runs rampant now), where does it stop?? owning half of GM, banks, insurance companies, why would people allow this? if the companies cant control their self and make good choices why should we pay to save them? long term taxes are about to get started at the top of a hill like a rock and their gonna roll right down to everyone else. its been said before and ill repeat it *It's better to be dead and cool, than alive and uncool* but most libs couldnt understand the way of thinking freely, only being sheepish and playing follow the leader LAWL!

If Perry wants to reject the money based on principal, all power to him. The problem is that he has (like a good republican) assured the poor people of Texas with a typical brainwashing pep talk that they don't need the money, yet he will still accept billions of dollars of stimulus money from Obama for his own pet pork projects.

Obviously not a man of principal, but another scheming, lying conservative.

Thank you for that! I believe the south is changing, except for the fundamentalists and let's face it, they are everywhere.

This last election we saw many red states turn blue. Even NC who usually votes red, voted blue (even though their last two governors were Democratic...just as the majority of TX governors have been Dems)

I remember (I think when Clinton was president) TX threatened to do the same thing. I also remember when the state congressional Dems took off on a bus to OKLA to delay a vote on something they deeply opposed (I can't remember what, I was just proud of them for standing together and doing it)

If nothing else, I see the last 8 years as a shift in more people becoming intellectually curious as opposed to just doing what their daddies told them to do (or what the media tells them.)

The rest of the country needs to know the winds of change are coming, even in the south.

When we truly begin to value education and treat all walks of life to the same benefit of a good, equal education, the inherent prejudices will dissipate and the knowledge/opening of minds gained will continue to change the way the wind blows.

"We are the ones who want to choose
Always want to play
but you never want to lose

Aeirals in the sky
When you lose small mind
You free your life"

"Free your mind and the rest will follow"

The only reason those states went blue is due to limited choice of candidates. The party platforms are taking over the Constitution, and so is the corporate welfare that feeds those candidates for their elections. Obama is simply Bush III. And has proved that due to expanding the war, and his campaign lies just as the rest.

Wake up.

We have tea parties in protest of higher taxes, as if we're unaware they've just become lower. So it would seem it's not Governor Perry, alone, who's nuts. Some have also directed protests against bank bailouts, apparently unaware it was the Fox crowd that initiated those bailouts under Bush. (Personally, I think they did the right thing, there, too, as I'm sure most political leaders, including Republicans, secretly believe, also. The question perpetually asked of those who would deny such should be, "What would have happened if the banks hadn't been saved? What if we'd rather let them and the economy work out its own problems? Wasn't a hands-off strategy of balancing budgets and letting capitalism sort things out, independently, Hoover's strategy, in similar times? And didn't we pay for that with a lot of misery and 25% unemployment?"

So here we've got Hoover-inspired, Fox-generated crowds protesting higher taxes even as they now have lower taxes. And we have a governor threatening to secede from the union over the same ludicrous fiction. This is a problem that arises when a network becomes more interested in propaganda than truth. We end up with TV promotions (similar to North Korea's) encouraging crowds to gather in opposition to fascism (and by the way, a talking head on Fox's stock channel actually used that word) and we see a governor out on the streets, spouting treasonous measures that really should get him impeached but rather wins him accolades on Fox.

And which of their owners are also friends with the candidates, and donate to their campaigns, since the news media now is now more than branches of the two political parties or their candidates. And simply use each other, while spinning all news for their own agendas. It works on both sides of the aisle. And where is CNN now on the war issue since Obama is now expanding it contrary to his stated positions - and also passed an Act that far exceeds Bush's in fundamental stripping of American citizens civil liberties - the National Health Care Database, and the Violent Radicalization and HOmeland Terrorist Act.

You are as much now branded a terrorist as those on that memo, since it really includes over 3/4s the American population - since you've been misinformed that it also includes many Democratic members - such as the entire Catholic faith.

The inflationary taxes on that debt will far exceed those piddly "shut up" tax reductions. Far, far exceed them. And also Obama's new little tax revenue scam, carbon credits for the corporate coffers and world government leeches. The demonstrations weren't over taxes, and that's the spin the left uses - that an religion - each and every time. It was over the practices of the Fed, but of course, the left wing media left all that out. And the policies of BOTH the Bush and Obama administration.

Keep up the propaganda. Do you, by any chance, work for one of the corporate news media welfare recipients such as CNN, Fox or any of the others. Since they use political discourse such as yours in order to improve ratings also most of all. And spin the propaganda mill and feed it actually using each other in order to improve their ratings, most of all - certainly not report the truth - and both are in bed with thepoliticians since they get a lot of that welfare and loans for their campaign political spots. Why do you think this last presidential election lasted two years? For the media, of course.

Honestly, why is it that some of these Texans have such dubious loyalty to the United States? If they ever do begin to seriously agitate for secession, then I hope that the Pentagon formulates a plan to seize all of the state's major oil fields. Other than an oil-rich region west of the Dallas-Fort Worth area and another stretching from Odessa to south of San Angelo, this should be a fairly easy undertaking, since most of Texas' other oil deposits are either on the Gulf Coast or share a border with loyal states.

Honestly,as a future voter and the actual fate of this country,I feel dividing the country isn't to bad of an idea. The Civil War started because of states' rights. If the issue comes up and persists again who knows what could happen. Weapons are more advanced and more dangerous then back in the 1860's.
If we were to start another war then there will be A LOT of death. I think a treaty to be removed from the "United States",if the state chooses so,is a smart and peaceful way to go.
I really believe this country is going to crap. We are possibly on the verge of another depression.
We've got the Jack Sparrow wannabe's stealing stuff. Money is tight and causing suicide.
I get paid minimum wage and onlt get 4 hours a week because our compant doesnt have the money to pay us. One of our biggest car company is gone. We have to address the issues. As a teen it does'nt hit me hard but im worried for my future. Where will I be in 6-8 years? On the street cause i cant make enough money to live in a apartment? Working my ass off just to get by like my mom?Something must be done and right now all of you adult are the only ones that can save this country from division or war. If you believe everything is ok then you could be the one hit the hardest.

Well, it seems most of you agree with the fact that secession is "anti-American". The thing you don't realize is how many of your basic rights and freedoms are being and will be taken away. First and foremost would be the stricter gun laws which basically is taking away our second amendment. Once a government leaves you defenseless, they can do what ever they want, which I believe is happening now. Your most basic freedom, freedom of speech, will probably be taken away also, starting with the small things most likely starting with the internet and talk shows since they are the least regulated, were not talking CNN.com or fox news, but blogs and such, they could be targeted next. Once the government takes those freedoms away, they can do anything they want with you, just think about. Call me a right-wing extremist or crazy, but I believe you will see this happening very soon. I'm not from Texas (from New York) and I'm not siding with there governor but I do think there is a huge problem with taking away our freedoms that our forefathers set for us to prevent tyranny, that many Presidents have committed since there time, including Obama! Think about, these are just opinions and nobody should be punished for sharing there opinions.

Well, one of the things that happened after the Civil War was restrictions in the Texas Constitution which barred seceding from the Union. This is also ignoring the several revisions of the Texas Constitution since it became a state. Despite Perry's statements he couldn't secede if he wanted to.

Rick Perry is a self-serving jerk who says what he says for political gain and to wind people up for his own irresponsible purposes. The problem is that the country is in a crisis, and we need real leadership, real analysis of the policy solutions, and a real sense of community to get through it....not a bunch of know-nothing bumper sticker slogans and nonsensical rabble-rousing. I'm from Lubbock, and I can assure you that Perry doesn't represent most Texans, but he sure does make us all look bad. Just what we needed after George W. Bush. We'd probably do best to ignore nuts like this and keep our eye on the ball: finding serious solutions for serious problems rather than wasting time on trying to inform the uninformable.
