With Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22, a coalition of environmental non-profit organizations, including Planet Green and Earth Day Network, have banded together to make this coming weekend a time of meaningful change. Planet Green has created a website where people can sign-up to volunteer on projects that range from cleaning up your local park to installing green roofs. The website services America's ten largest cities and the coalition estimates the number of volunteers to be in the hundreds of thousands.

The Huffington Post intends to highlight the weekend's activities and tell the stories of individual volunteers, but we can't do it without you. Sign-up here to join our good news team and we'll email you with directions on how to send us stories in the future. And if you detest writing, don't let that deter you, we're looking for photographs as well.

You can send your photos and stories from Earth Day Volunteer Weekend to submissions+earthday@huffingtonpost.com. Make sure to identify yourself and where you're from. Try to send you submission before Monday at noon since we intend to feature these stories on Earth Day, April 22.

Photographs and vignettes of benevolent deeds from your community can serve as a much-needed counterpoint to the doom and gloom surrounding the economy; let's help change the conversation -- we can't do it without you.

I'm so glad to see a first family that actually cares about our environment. It's great that the country can see our first lady really showing how important it is to be in tune with nature - the gardening pics are too cute!! Any child would benefit from establishing a garden with their parents - from learning how to be patient to learning how to cook with the food that will grow!

Big props to the first lady in her endeavor!

I agree. It's also great that this administration has made it easier for people who want to become involved to find a compatible activity to participate in. I have volunteered for a soup kitchen that I found through their list. For Earth Day, my daughter is participating in Stream Watch, which is a program where students remove weeds from streams and also plant trees on park trails here in PA.
Kudos to the FLOTUS for increasing awareness.

The spirit of earth day is truly amazing. I have written some more thoughts around the same at http://www.blog.ideasrule.com/2009/04/basoda-do-we-do-this-for-environmental-reason/

Let me know what you think about it.

Enjoyed reading your post. For people who are not Indian, you may want to give some more information on Basoda and translate what Matha Ka Thanda means. When I lived in India, this was a special time of the year. Brings back memories.........

Only to those who believe that the Earth is to be worshiped instead of the Lord Jesus Christ who told us (see Matthew 6:25- 34) NOT TO WORRY about such things because the Lord our God will provide for His people, unless HE CHOOSES NOT TO DO SO-- and either way it is THE WILL OF GOD (not the will of man) that is really in control!

That is an easy way out for you. He "loaned" us the world and asked that we be "good stewards". The world will continue with our without us and can shake us off like a virus. It is up to us if we want to remain a part of it.

It certainly would be an elegant and useful contrast to those "tea parties."
