Susan Boyle, the British talent show competitor who became a YouTube sensation this week, made her first US appearance Thursday morning.

She told CBS's "The Early Show that her fame 'hasn't really sunk in yet.' and that her performance was for her mother, who died recently.

"I wanted to make this a tribute to my mother," Boyle said. "I knew it was something I had to do. I had to get on with it. That's where the courage came from, my mother."

She then sang a bit for the hosts, and nailed every note.

I am still feeling the awe and great joy which Susan so freely gave in her performance.
It is not only that amazing voice but a humble yet strong and giving personality which is what makes a legendary performer.
She gave herself to the world and for all that, I continue to crave the sound of her voice and of the two songs : I Dreamed a Dream and Cry Me a River. SO MANY NUANCES AND CONFIDENTIAL CONTROL..
I am Blown away by the Bad Looks comments: I saw a Romeo and Juliet Opera where the lead singers were in the 40's plus range and most definitely larger than healthy and this was apparently just fine. Opera singers are allowed varying body and beauty types without the negative reactions.
Her body and being is Not less than beautiful: she is magnificent.

Nobody cares but you.

She's 100% female as far as I'm concerned. If she ain't...so what.

Words can not begin to describe my amazement at the beautiful voice that this woman has. I must admit that I was just as cynical as the judges and audience when this woman first arrived on stage. I thought, what an odd woman, she is a bit old for the music industry, which prizes youth and beauty. But the moment this woman sang her first note, I realized that she was gifted beyond belief. This woman has amazing courage and bravery. She had no fears of telling her story of never having gone on a date and having never been kissed. Her spunky attitude made me feel fantastic and hopeful, that no matter how bad your circumstances are in life that a possitive and cheerful attitude can inspire you to do great things. I hope this woman wins the show. If she looses the show it is not the last we will hear from this woman. American Idol contestants who have been voted off have proven that they can still be wildly successful. This woman for sure is bound for great things. I look foward to hearing about her journeys to come. I will be one of the first to snatch up her debut album and would be honored and privledged to be able to see her preform live.

ANOTHER SONG- just discovered from 1999 recording she did. " Cry me a river"

God, she has an angelic voice!

Yes, she has a beautiful voice. Yes, she's not the most attractive person in the world? But why are the morning news people so patronizing? The woman starts by saying "you look lovely" and then they continue to talk to her like she's a dumb little kid or something. Like when people raise their voices when talking to people who don't speak English, they seem to be super kind to this woman who has been declared by the world be -- yikes -- ugly and talented.

Susan Boyle is fantastic. I ignored checking out anything on this story until this morning, and her voice blew me away.

Might this be the very first tiny step towards talent becoming more important than image in the music biz.

All that matters is that Susan Boyle sang brilliantly, and people enjoyed it, including me. All of a sudden people are worried that Simon Cowell is pulling a fast one and manipulated her for ratings and money. So this is something new? I mean, over half of our country voted for Obama.

Analogy to show your faulty reasoning: Is murder something new? Of course not! Ought we to let murder go by without obstruction or even comment, just because it isn't new? Of course not! So, just because exploitation happens in many guises all the time doesn't mean that we ought not to protest about it.

Could a Susan Boyle exist in America? I'm not sure. Without ever working, she must have been on the dole most of her life. Would she still have her dignity being on welfare and food stamps all her life in America and be able to sing with confidence? Has she had any health care crisis? If so in America she might not have survived and died in some emergency room while waiting for charity service.

WHere in her story did it say she has never been employed. She said she was currently unemployed and looking. She seemed healthy and happy to me. Maybe she had to take time off to care for her mother and lived on her savings.

It would be hard for anyone to argue with the range and scope of Susan Boyle’s beautiful voice, powerful, yet tinge with a dulcet quality. She wasn’t parroting a song, she was singing from her heart and soul. She was in essence giving that song meaning.
But there is more to Susan than just her singing talent. She has touched many with what she chose to do: fulfill her life’s dream. A frumpy, middle-aged woman, from an obscure small village decided to put everything on the line, including being ridiculed, to reach for that brass ring. She has taught us all that dreams are ageless, boundless. Dreams only die when we stop believing, do nothing, allowing them to wither away. A truly remarkable, talented woman.

Susan Boyle can teach us to appreciate beauty in every human being instead of the the cookie cutter looks we've come to know in this country as the only standard of beauty. I recall Aretha Franklin at the Inauguration. She is definitely not a supermodel yet with that one of a kind hat she was beautiful. I loved it. When I was young I had certain 'ideals' of feminine beauty but over the years I've come to appreciate all kinds of non traditional looks in women because of who they were. I thought the young Barbra Streisand was striking. When she was on the screen you didn't notice anyone else but lately she has taken herself a little too seriously. For example, I love Cloris Leachman and Angelina Jolie. They each have their unique qualities. On the other hand I find Hugh Hefner's girlfriends bland and uninteresting. Susan Boyle is a gift to us just as she is. Are we up to accepting her that way?

Two comments about Susan Boyle:
(1) has anybody thought that all this sudden attention and overnight fame might be a VERY BAD thing for her? Will she be able to handle it (or handle it when it goes away)? Look how fame ruined Jacko. Ms Boyle could easily up the victim of all this media hype...
(2) It has to be a very strong possibility that Simon masterminded this whole saga as a massive publicity stunt to promote BGT/AGT. Note that it was the very first episode of the 2009 series of BGT! Note that Simon has been hinting at leaving Idol. Idol has become very "good looks, trendy, walk-the -walk, talk-the-talk", but perhaps there is a bigger potential audience out there that would identify more with the likes of Ms. Boyle? Simon is no fool, as his US$50m salary demonstrates. Susan Boyle is genuine, not fake, but maybe Simon has manipulated and orchestrated this situation like a true master?!

These two are so condescending...sound like they are speaking to a 5 year old...you look lovely etc. How do they know she doesn't have a PhD in physics. Honestly, the surprise that someone who doesn't fit "the profile" might have anything to offer at all is ridiculous. The surprise that someone who doesn't have the gift of the face and figure of the moment might have a much greater gift. This boggles their minds.

Really shabby of CBS of produce a remote interview. If I was a Morning Show producer, I would have sent a limo to pick Ms. Boyle up at her house, drive her to the nearest airport, fly her first class to NYC, have a limo pick her up and interview her in their studios. She deserves more respect than that treatment.

I believe the reason the whole world is ga ga over Susan is that many of us are fed up with plastic singers singing plastic songs leaving our hearts untouched. Here comes along an authentically wonderful singer in the middle of all that fake stuff. I love all kinds of music and listen to everything, but every so often something special like this happens that lifts our souls. Go Susan!

Did you catch her recording on youTube? Made 10 years ago for a charity CD? AWESOME!
