Cramer Solin

Dan Solin, regular HuffPost blogger and author of The Smartest 401k Book You'll Ever Read, appeared on CNBC's "Power Lunch" Friday and challenged the network for its "In Cramer We Trust" slogan.

When asked by CNBC's Brian Schactman about the best ways to save for retirement, Solin said , "One of the things that you could do instead is to give us more 'In Bogle we Trust' and much less 'In Cramer we Trust."

Cramer himself then stormed onto the show's set to defend himself and trash index funds, which Solin was advocating.

"In all due respect, the S&P is flat literally for ten years," Cramer said. "That's Jon Bogle's world. If you were to sell at 11,000 like I told you in September, 10,000 like I told you in December, and then get back in at 6,500, who wins? Is that so bad? Is that worth not trusting in?"

Cramer then got especially heated.

"I've had it with the people who tell me about the index fund," he screamed. "For ten years they've done nothing! For ten years! When do they get called on the carpet? When are they ever wrong? Do we have to wait another ten years? Enough of this! I've said my piece. Happy 20th!"

CNBC celebrated its 20th anniversary Friday by opening and closing the New York Stock Exchange.

Cramer came in hit and ran. He did not stay around for any comments.

Funny he is never wrong. Excuse me! Stewart got him to say he was wrong and would change. But Stewart had film.

Cramer got religion until he got off the show and then he returned to being a jerk.

Wouldn't he be better off on FOX where it is okay to twist stories, rewrite stories and just plain lie!

Exactly what I've been trying to say but they keep zapping that comment. But Cramer should be a part of FOX for sure. They are in the same category of untruths.

Oh, believe me, as a watcher of cnbc, I tell you, he fits fine. I don't believe a word they say 90% of the time. They throw in just enough "truthiness" to have something to reflect back on when things go oppposite of what they have been saying.

Dear CNBC,

That's enough.
Enough with the talking heads shouting over each other.
Enough with Jim Cramer trying to play the victim.
Enough with "In Cramer We Trust"

You guys have been are the network equivalent of a late night infomercial.
You're pitchmen for the Fortune 500.
It was good business for a while as long as you didn't bite the hand that fed you.
But Jim Cramer's ego got too big and started taking on John Stewart.
And all you arrogant wall street types thought he was just a comedian.
You couldn't recognize a real journalist because you don't employ any.
Instead, you hire the wall street version of Billy Mays.

But at least with Billy, there is a money back guarantee.
There isn't one on my 401(k)

Sincerely
(your signature here)

We have one power over CNBC. We can stop watching them. Stop taking their advice. This will have a far greater impact than anything else we can do.

Kramer's eyes bug out.

This looks like those segments between WWE wrestling matches....
all the need to do it put Mean Gene Okerland in there to moderate.

Well he's on the way out and he knows it. He had a good thing and was becoming very popular with the college folk and their moms, as well as lucrative book sales that he plugged on his show. He went too far and now he's out the door.

Hoisted by his own petard.

Just let him go, his own words will bring him down quicker than Jon Stewart ever could, and he did a fantastic job at that already.

It's a slow burn people, just let him fan his own flames.

Come on people, it’s unlikely most of you have even watched his show! Its peak viewership is only 500,000! And yet you have such strong opinions based on what?,,,,a few video clips? Wow, knee-jerk reactions are as common here as at a tea bag party!

BTW, the vid that Stewart played of Cramer explaining how hedge funds can manipulate a stock is years old, and should be required watching for everyone investing. It’s easy to find on youtube.

For me, I’d rather listen to rantings and ravings of someone who has an intimate knowledge of the game than someone with an agenda, and no for the uninformed, Cramer isn’t currently manipulating the market for his own gain in any way.

Maybe the “outraged” here should listen to his show. They might hear some good ideas about very difficult topics such as when to buy, when to sell, how to do research on stocks, why diversification can work, etc.

And for those of you mystified by why people watch CNBC, the answer is simple: every trading room I’ve been in has CNBC on the entire trading day. It isn’t for what they say, but it’s just an acknowledgement that every other trader is watching, and movements can be gamed, if one is lucky.

Inverstors should be aware of the trading world….it affects even long term plans, and Cramer is trying to alert people to this, and he’s vilified. Strange….

What you just said is exactly what I don't want - this is Vegas investing, that's what I call it. I would rather have my funds invested in solid secure markets that I can sit back and relax on. I am not a gambler at all and most Americans are not either. For those of you who like gambling, then yes, Cramer and CNBC might be your cup of tea. But it's not for me, personally.

His show is a joke and not for serious investors. All that booya crap and ringing bells and b.s. Worst of all following his advice would have been disastrous for most investers. As a retiree with investments, I used to watch his show from time to time and I even bought one of his books which I tossed. CNBC admitted their show is for traders and Wall Street insiders which makes them dangerous to your wealth. They are also bring a right wing perspective to their political views which is not surprising given they are a business channel. CNBC is useful to have on to watch the tape while doing something else and putting it on mute.

I agree with Jim Cramer 100%. My 401k account is down almost 30% because all they do is buy and HOPE! I'm up almost 100% on my brokerage account!

I can't wait to see Jim Cramer next Wednesday. He will be live at The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business!

Dan Solin is speaking of responsible, steady growth investment (Roth IRAs), rather than questionable trades like short-selling, which should be illegal, and if you look at this practice closely, they can even RUIN companies. There is an excellent video from Overstock.com that tells how short-selling nearly destroyed them. There are some responsible investment firms who can make money, Vanguard is one excellent choice.

http://www.overstock.com/naked-short-selling.html

How can we still be arguing these facts after eveything dropped out of the stock market and people lost so much money? Bring back the regulations; they kept us stable for 50 years. It's one thing to give general advice another thing to speculate and encourage.

At this point, Jim Cramer = Toxic Asset. We didn't have these shows on the tube for the last 50 years, why do we need them now? At least take them back to B.C. (before Cramer) when being a clown wasn't the norm and people were somber and serious about investments, as it should be.

Excellent post. 401k plans should be solid and investing for them should be more secure and regulated. If you want to take chances like Cramer suggests, then you should handle your own 401k plan. I definitely don't want someone playing Vegas with my money. Those who like to take chances, all power to you. Cramer is your guy.

There goes that tactical brilliance of Jim Cramer again. He will blunder himself right off the edge of the map at this rate and that is a good thing. He is now incapable of making a correct move anymore. Two or three more moves like this and he will undo his shady and shaky career altogether.

He is the classic Self-Destruct model. His rage and insecurities are enveloping his dreams and crushing them., as well they should.

Seinfeld's Kramer is more popular than him right now. He is slowly disintegrating to the nothing he deserves to be.

Cramer's reputation went out the window on The Daily Show, not because Jon Stewart destroyed him, but because he was caught on video saying how to dodge the rules of the SEC.

Why is this guy not being brought up on SEC violations, his own words say's he learned how to circumvent the laws.

Q. Why is this guy not being brought up on SEC violations?

Because the media has taken over. They don't want anyone to be charged. As soon as anyone starts talking and is listened to, the whole illegal house of cards will fall down.

The 'media' is just loaded with government plants who keep the 'conversation' right where the CIA/big media want it to be.

Howie Kurtz can't actually criticize the media cover up because he is part of it.

It is about blackmail and uses sex and probably drugs and is run by the CIA. The FBI doesn't even investigate it, how is the media supposed to?

We have become a trapped and ignorant nation.

They all jump on him in unison when he talks about IRAs.
I knew people who had been investing in their 401ks for decades and lost half of that investment when the market kept tumbling back in 2000. I can imagine that it was even worse in the recent nose dive last fall.

Why was Cramer getting hysterical over this man's suggestions?
IRAs are another way of saving and a good one for those who don't want to gamble on the markets.

Why was Cramer getting hysterical over this man's suggestions?

Perhaps because he realizes if he lets up on his own loud and public defense, people will start thinking about charging him with some conspiracy and racketeering charges.

I don't know for sure, exactly, it is just a thought.
