5 People Found Dead In Maryland Home: Police

ALEX DOMINGUEZ   04/19/09 12:45 AM ET   AP

Maryland

MIDDLETOWN, Md. — An accountant for a railroad operator killed his wife and their three children before fatally shooting himself in a northwest Maryland home, leaving a gruesome scene that was discovered Saturday by the youngsters' grandfather, authorities said.

Authorities didn't specify a motive but said there was evidence the man faced psychiatric and financial problems.

When investigators arrived at the two-story home, the couple's two sons, ages 5 and 4, lay dead in their beds, while the bodies of a 2-year-old daughter and the mother, Francis Billotti Wood, were in the master bedroom, Frederick County sheriff's office spokeswoman Jennifer Bailey said. On the master bedroom floor by the foot of the bed was the father, 34-year-old Christopher Alan Wood, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Bailey said.

The 33-year-old mother and three children suffered "traumatic cuts" and each also had at least one gunshot wound from a .25-caliber handgun, Frederick County Sheriff Charles Jenkins said. Their precise cause of death wasn't immediately known, and Jenkins declined to say what was used to slash them.

The woman's father found them dead around 9 a.m. He had grown concerned after not hearing from them for several days, Bailey said.

Christopher Wood apologized to family members in one of five notes he wrote and left at the scene, and he indicated in a note that he had psychiatric problems, Jenkins said. The sheriff wouldn't elaborate on what else was written in the notes.

The sheriff also said there was evidence that Wood, a sales accountant at CSX Corp., faced financial problems and may have been in debt.

CSX did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Saturday.

The family had moved months ago to the home in the town of Middletown, a community of less than 3,000 people about 10 miles west of Frederick, friends said.

"We're all in shock and trying to come to terms," said Kevin Farmer, the pastor of Holy Family Catholic Community Church, where the mother taught catechism.

The director of Middletown United Methodist Church Preschool, Jane Durant, said she last saw Francis Wood on Thursday morning, when she picked up her 4-year-old son at the school.

The boy didn't come to school the next day. Durant, the school's director, thought it was unusual. Now, she wonders if something horrible happened Thursday night.

Durant said Francis Wood _ whom she called "Francie" _ returned to her native Middletown from Texas last year to be closer to her family. She described Francis Wood as a vibrant, bubbly and loving person.

"I just talked to her every day and she's just one of those people you fell in love with right away," Durant said.

Neighbor Peggy Lawrence described Francis Wood as a good homemaker.

"It wouldn't lead you to believe anything was wrong," Lawrence said. "I'm still sick to my stomach. Just to see it end so quickly is so devastating and makes you realize you never know what's going on in people's lives."

the neighbors and co-workers thought it was unusual for the mother to come to work or the children to come to school and yet they did not alert the police. what a community!

Oh for the love of god stop blaming the economy for this crap. There are people who have lived in this country who have been way poorer than them for nearly a 100 years and they don't get any excuses for what they do. Whether it's joining games or drug dealing, everything they do is just them being thugs. These people kill their children and their spouses and it's not their fault, nope. It's the economy. Whatever.

one more time...i posted this link so all you anti-gun types might get a clue...this horrific type of crime has been going on for generations...i don't think they made dynamite illegal for civilian purchase until the 1950s...the thing that liberals don't understand is that anyone that can make meth in their car can make nitro or symtex...and anyone who took shop in high school can make a basic gun...and gun powder only has three ingredients...none of which are very expensive...don't believe me...just look up the price for coal..sulfur and salt peter....

your reply to my statements of fact in no way solves the problem of seemingly normal people doing crazy stuff...i gave you a link to the worst school massacre ever in the u.s....i can just as easily give you links to mass killings involving knives...or if you prefer i can give you links to police officers gone bad....and since you are a friend of the deceased why didn't you stop this from happening....and according to the report he use an .25 caliber handgun which would not be banned under the awb...if you want to have an argument lets start with the premise that man is an animal as wild as any that lives and like all animals we are unpredictable...we murder our young and old alike...some of us murder our own young and old...and you cannot point to one race or religion or creed or color that has been able to prevent such things from occuring....

I am a liberal, A former military officer and a father. Your post is inappropriate, and your argument is weak. It has nothing to do with the story, or any of the posts around it.

To the friends and family of the deceased, my sympathies.

Don't use the actions of man to judge God.

The fact that this man was a Christian does not mean he was immune to psychiaric issues, human frailty and pain.

...but God created Man in his own image. Doesn't he bear some responsibility for the state of affairs. I know all about the free will thing. That's no excuse for God to create a defective race of beings, because he could have just as well created Man to have free will to be good, without the bad.

Another thing... God created evil along with good. What's that all about. Why the evil? If I was a God with all those super powers, I could have done a much better job.

I'm thinking about this as I'm typing, and I am realizing that: God created man in his own image, and Man expresses itself as both good and Evil. Now what does that make God? I would say both good and evil. That would explain why he created Satan. That's kind of screwed up, and is definitely not perfect.

I think whomever/whatever created God, should start from scratch and try again.

FTA: "Authorities didn't specify a motive but said there was evidence the man faced psychiatric and financial problems."

Now we get to see the human facet of the Bush great depression and of the simpering chimp's econmic policies. It wasn't only the lives of the people of Mesopotamia that man helped to ruin.

Why not make a big deal over this one:
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/6380742.html

Got something to ban?

Never see too much of these stories in here? And what about all those parents who do drown their children? Never here much about that either. Never hear about bans or taking away freedoms from everyone? Gee, I thought it was about lives......If we can save just one life?
05:01 PM on 04/19/2009
If you read the story, you notice that he'd hacked the family up with something sharp already, and seems to have shot them to only make sure. The only life that might have been saved was the husband's, which the evidence seems to indicate wasn't worth saving. Please use something else to justify your dislike of firearms and anyone that happens to own them.

Thankfully, this murder/suicide was in Maryland otherwise we might confuse this story with the other stores of people killing their entire family before killing themselves.

My evening walk through an extremely upscale area of Los Angeles is no longer a nice way to unwind after work or study. I must pass at least four or five couples screaming at each other a night now. I am beginning to understand the people who walk around with Ipod earphones.

So when are our fearless leaders going to finally admit we are in a depression?

"So when are our fearless leaders going to finally admit we are in a depression?"

Bush said he wanted his to be a memorable presidency. Well, mission accomplished. No adult now alive will forget the depression he caused, and most of us will wistfully recall what a great country we once had before Bush was appointed president by the SCOTUS.

the culture of denial continues to rule the roost:

this culture that wants to be distracted by petty agendas that are festive and 'fun': because this culture has been so well engineered to believe we should care about 'american idol' finals and the troubles with lindsey lohan and care about so-called 'family values' a la miley cyrus that to look into the shadows and into the abyss should be left to 'experts' who are quick to hand out pills and more pills and ignore how systematic this problem continues to grow:

we are a culture that has lost nerve, and we are a culture that continues to find reasons to ignore these shadows in 'hope' that the 'experts' and 'god' will save us from this confusion and sinking waters of doubts. in the end, we will either continue to follow this destructive path of denial or we will learn how to seize control over ourselves for ourselves.

well our bodies reflect how soft we have become.... a significant number of americans are immobilized
by obesity they can barely move to walk much less do any kind of vigorous activity....our minds are equally sluggish since most people do not read books and we have found numerous ways to self-medicate rather than change and improve.

slightly off-topic- why do people have so many kids????????????????????????I can't imagine the impotence felt at not being able to support your family but to resort to this if that was the reason....too many times it's that the wife was leaving and the huband was po'd.
08:04 PM on 04/19/2009
Because they want to be good little patriots and produce children to stimulate the economy. Maybe they want someone around to take care of them when they get old. Maybe they are bored and so they screw a lot. They could be devout Catholics who do not believe in birth control. Perhaps they love children.

Don't use the actions of man to judge God.

And....for what it's worth.... Jesus would never be a right-wing republican Christian. Please don't equate Christianity with right wing extremism. There are intelligent liberal Christians out there.

Another sad story and of many more to come.
As people lose there lively hoods, they resort to desperate means, to a end.
09:58 AM on 04/19/2009
And that, my friend, may very well be the most tragic part of this whole sorry economic mess. This unstable economy, on top of all the other stresses that have seemed to multiply almost exponentially in people's lives these last 30-40 years is quite likely be the straw that broke the camel's back for a huge number of people.
01:34 PM on 04/19/2009
Why do they cut their children to death?
I can see being desperate and killing yourself.
I can see deluding yourself into thinking that your entire family can't survive without you.
If you are so delusional, why not make their deaths quick and painless.
There is more than financial stuff going on here.
This is a crime of revenge.
