Hollywood's pool of leading men is getting larger -- and not necessarily in a good way.

Based on a close look at trailers, still photos and some films already released, at least a dozen male stars in some of the year's most prominent movies have been adding on the pounds of late.

Male actors get fat because they can. Nobody cares. Female actresses stay anorexic skinny, have their faces botoxed until they can no longer make any expression and get plastic boobies because they have to.

was this article kept from the Pulitzer prize committee? I think if they saw it, they might reconsider.

Let's see, Russel Crowe plays a slovenly hard drinking reporter from Pittsburgh in State of Play (great movie btw, saw it yesterday), how should he look?

Who wrote this piece? A 12 year old short bus passenger?

No, actually Hugh Jackman wrote it. He's tired of being offered movies like X-Men 4 and duds like Australia even though he's over 40 and still looking d@mn good. After being passed over for fellow Aussie Crowe one too many times he decided to tell us what he really thinks.....under an alias, of course.

Quite frankly, I am surprised at all the bloggers on here that seem to "okay" the actors getting fat and not blow an artery. How sexist is this? Poor Jessica was ragged for putting on a few, to such an extent that she was forced to squeeze that same size back into her "dukes" to prove she is still "thin". There is an outcry because Tori spelling is "anorexic". Everybody is scrutinzing the weight of the female actors as soon as they gave birth to see how much baby fat they still show DAYS after they gave birth. There should be an equal outcry about the male actors putting on all that weight. Yes they are getting older and it is usual to increase in size...for regular people, ..... not for the actors. They own personal trainers, not to mention home gymns and we should expect them to be in shape ALL OF THE TIME. Nobody wants to look at out of shape male actors, double chins and bloating bellies are a big turn off. Hollywood should give them a skip and go for the Zac Efrons and the other up and coming ones. Come on folks lets give these male actors as good as the females ones get!!!!!

Some of the women in showbiz are looking pretty bizarre, the extensive plastic surgery for example (what is up with the massive fake lips lately?). Male actors for the most part are, you're right, left alone. It irritates me that the women in Hollywood actually go under the knife to the degree that they do, they should mutiny and say "F-you!" instead of falling into the excessive plastic surgery trap. Who do they think finds these over-Botoxed and Lip Injection From HeII women attractive? Do men? Because I, as a female movie-goer, certainly do not.

I want male AND female actors to look real. Forget judging either gender, I just want to see some decent acting!

I thought that Russell put on weight for the role. Having said that, I have noticed that male stars are more beefy these days. They can get away with it just like they get away with wrinkles.

Agree totally. That being said - Russell Crowe is still looking fine. Also, looks like he'll be carrying this movie.

Because we the public let them get away with it! Let's not call it beefy, it is what it is FAT!

Most of the male actors from the 50s and 60s were on meth or diet pills provided by their studios. Did you really think they were all that "naturally thin" back then ?

actually Jimmy Stewart WAS naturally thin, had a hard time gaining weight so he could enlist

What a ridiculous story. All the men listed are middle-aged. Perfectly natural for them to fill out more as they age. What is that writer, a teenager? And these actors are the stars because the younger actors don't have the chops to pull off these roles. So today every movie isn't being made for the 12-19 year-olds. GOOD. It's about time. Maybe those "not another" pics finally killed the trend.

Extra weight is fine...but don't get all phat and dumpy looking.
They can afford a treadmill in every room.
Just get up and move it.

Actors gain and lose weight for roles all the time, that is a fact and old news. The human body is what it is, and nobody is immune to gaining at some point. Yo Yo dieting is horrible for you as it screws with your metabalism, making it harder to lose over time. I dont care if you kill yourself on work out routines, you will still have cellulite and get a paunch now and then. What is dangerous is if its due to a poor diet, smoking, no excercise whatsoever, heavy drinking and living a dangerous life style.
I am not going to lose sleep over actors who may or may not be gaining weight, its not a serious issue now is it? No. Families losing homes, houses, healthcare, jobs, sons and daughters to a needless war? Yes, those are real and serious issues we all must be concerned about.

Look at Micky Roorke in "The Wrestler" and look at him today. What happened? Look at Russel Crow in "Gladiator". If it's unethical to take steroids to win at baseball, why isn't it unethical to take steroids to win an Oscar or Golden Globe? Just sayin'.

Being in better shape doesn't help you win an acting award.

Besides, the character took steroids in the movie.
