The Edge

E! Online:

The U2 guitarist's plans to build five mountaintop mansions in Malibu with fantastic oceanside views is facing fierce opposition from some famous NIMBYs concerned the homes will be an environmental catastrophe.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the proposed project would be built above homes belonging to the likes of Dick Van Dyke, Kelsey Grammer and James Cameron and would require some extensive and tricky engineering, including extension of a road down a rugged elevation, grading 70,000 cubic yards of hillside and installing water lines.

OK, 5-10,000sf homes/70,000cy of dirt. I guess 2k+per person is more "green" than I thought. Did "Edge" get direction from Julia Dreyfuss or some other fancy people about environmental hypocrisy?
When is there going to be some kind of accountability that looks more closely at what happens day to day with some of these celebrities who say they are eco-friendly. Multiple houses, lots of travel, etc.-
it's Ok, just don't "pose" for one goal and sneak around with carbon-rich/resource rich lifestyles.

all you people b*tching and complaining are jealous critics!
it's his money, he earned it and you want him to sacrafice his own life because you don't realise that he's entitled to do whatever he wants with it. you jealous people want him to be destitute, homeless and begging for money to eat. otherwise you think he's insincere. but the truth is, it wouldn't matter what he did, it wouldn't make you happy. you haven't the slightest interest in the truth. God bless the edge! they are some of the most green homes and excellent homes in the world, also they can't be seen from the outside, they will be Hidden. also, u2 have Given to Charity Over $300,000,000.00! you would think they would be Thanked! they've also raised tens of billions! they donated proceeds of numerous concerts for Irish charities.

So are you saying I have a small bio?

Guess you shouldn't live next to so many rich people, I hear they make really bad neighbors.

Why don't you pay your taxes in Ireland?

The most interesting class I took in law school was land use planning. Know this: the California Coastal Commission is no joke, so he's definitely going to have to jump through some hurdles.

Stranger things have happened than a zoning or planning commission voting down a permit because it will negatively impact the view of others.......

It all comes down to 'green'. More so, the color of money than the environment. How many of Edge's neighbors that are complaining the loudest have an environmentally smart home? Are their homes' blueprints and construction products used public knowledge as well?

He's The Edge, he can do what he wants.

I'm sure he will do whatever he wants, but that won't stop me from giving him heII.

I knew Candy Spelling; Candy Spelling was a friend of mine. Edge, you're no Candy Spelling!

(my Lloyd Bentsen imitation)

Nice view. The surrounding residents knew before they purchased their home that an empty parcel of land near or above them in elevation will be developed eventually.

See what all that Irish tax evasion money can buy you?

Who the hell in their right mind would be moving into a precarious position near an ocean, with all that we know of the damage we are doing to our world and the oceans on the rise, and rapidly in the coming decades?

Maybe all of you "architecture experts" and champions of the environment should look at his plans before deciding whether to hang him or have him shot.

Since you are all making assumptions I will make one as well. According to the article, if you bothered reading it, he claims the houses will be "green" and very environmentally friendly. Perhaps they will be solar powered, and would likely leave a smaller footprint than the shack you all live in.

If he does this then who is anyone here to blather on with more of their hypocritical jealous rants?

I've heard it going to be huge. At least 2000 sq. ft, and get this...three bathrooms. Insane.
03:11 PM on 04/20/2009
2000 sq. ft is not "huge."
05:10 AM on 04/19/2009
Are the "mansions" going to be like Bono's south of France mansion at 52,000 sq. ft? Do you think it's big enough?
11:17 AM on 04/21/2009
That's not fair. 50,000 square feet is used for Mr. Hewson's travel-sized ego. The real one wouldn't fit!

Let's hope he is denied building these monstrosities. No one needs so much house. Perhaps a nice already existing castle Ireland, or, as mentioned below, Candy Spelling's manse.

He should talk to Max Weinberg. The E Street Band drummer had the same problem when he tried to build a group of expensive homes in a rural area of New Jersey. After practically moving into his county's zoning office, Max prevailed and the project was a success. Wall St. Journal had a long article with details about six months ago.
