THE poverty-stricken father of Slumdog Millionaire child star Rubina Ali plans to become a millionaire himself-by SELLING his nine-year-old daughter.

In a bid to escape India's real-life slums, Rafiq Qureshi put angel-faced darling of the Oscars Rubina up for adoption, demanding millions of rupees worth £200,000.

As he offered the shocking deal to the News of the World's undercover fake sheik this week, Rafiq declared: "I have to consider what's best for me, my family and Rubina's future."

The comments posted here so far show an obvious lack of understanding or compassion. This story is not about Madonna. Rubina is one of 11 million children living in poverty in India. Her father grew up in poverty and while his actions may seem shocking and despicable to the West, he is doing what he can to survive. He is trying to get his entire family out of a slum and none of us knows how we would act given the same circumstances. It's very easy to judge from the comfort of a home with running water and electricity. Sadly Rubina's story may turn out better than most but that still leaves 10,999,999 more children in the same desperate circumstances.
