THE poverty-stricken father of Slumdog Millionaire child star Rubina Ali plans to become a millionaire himself-by SELLING his nine-year-old daughter.

In a bid to escape India's real-life slums, Rafiq Qureshi put angel-faced darling of the Oscars Rubina up for adoption, demanding millions of rupees worth £200,000.

Quick somebody call Madonna? The father's right, any life outside of the filth of this inhuman and horrible existence is not too high a price to pay as long as the girl is safe. Why can't India do something about this awful poverty. Is there really so little in India that millions must be forced to live like this?

The makers of Slumdog Millionaire should be ashamed for not doing something more for these families esp. after winning all those awards. I'm sorry but that Is craaaaap. I haven't seen the movie and don't intend to. All I can say is it is slummy not to have more concern for your fellow man when you have millions and these people are living like this. Unacceptable. How could the Slumdog people go there and see such misery and not help them?

I think His Holiness the Dali Lama should be asked what he thinks should be done . I think India should be asked to answer for their indifference to their poor. I think for a country, poverty is like a report card. You have millions of people starving in the streets, you get a big fat F. I would never travel there because of it. India has fertile lands, plenty of water, and educated people it should be rich.

P.S. Caste systems are unevolved, primitive, backwards

A big problem in India, and a growing problem in the world, is that the population is too big for the planet to support in any kind of comfort. People live in the streets in India because there is nowhere else for them to live. No matter how fertile the land is, it can only grow so much food.

If the people on this planet don't get the population under control, we're headed for disaster. It may already be too late.

My heart goes out to this child. It's disgusting. I hope that it's not true, but if it is I wouldn't be surprise

First off, since when whatever NOTW publishes considered 'news'? It makes the Washington Times look legit.

Secondly the father was offering the girl up for ADOPTION (yes it is still wrong but please, its not the same as offering her as a sexslave). It's simply a case of NOTW sensationalising this issue.

Madonna took a baby away from his father in Malawi. Child still had a father and grandparents. So?

Offering a child to a wealthy person without any question or checking into who they are, what they will do to her - that is the same as offering her for a sex slave - she's being handed over for money, for whatever purposes the purchasers want.

Sad if it's true, but also really interesting.

What kicked all of this off was the effort by the producers to preserve money for the children who'd actually been in the films. From what I understand, they offered to housing to families with the caveat that it didn't actually belong to the parents until after the kids turned 18 (to stop them from selling or renting the housing beforehand). They arranged for tuition and trust funds that were linked and required the kids to stay in school until they were 18. They sent the kids monthly "pocket money" with the full understanding that it would likely go to the family. They gave the parents quite a lot of money initially, and it all vanished, which is what led to the stuff above.

I thought that was ingenious. I couldn't think of a way around it other than keeping the children housed, educated and safe.

Clearly, I didn't think of the ultimate get-rich-quick angle of actually selling the child outright. Who needs to wait the 10 years for the trust fund to mature, which would then be in the child's name anyhow, if you can just get 200k immediately? I'm pretty sure the producers didn't think of this possibility either.

India has over a billion people, concentration of wealth is centered on the big cities. Obviously he is not a good father or a business man so I say adopt the the child to someone who cares like Madonna.

This is World Poverty, stop pretending you don't know.

This is what happens when only a few people have control the world's resources.

When you pay little for the manufacturing of products someone has to pay for it down the line, it's those living in poverty.

The reason why all the jobs in the US were shipped overseas was because the American People didn't want to pay fair wage to their own people, they wanted cheap labor.

Cheap labor comes only from those who are disparate and live in poverty.

Hollywood exploited these children and the poverty they live in, they pulled your heart strings for 2 hours and it made themselves rich. Don't pretend you didn't know, that's what they do.

Same goes for the newspapers exploiting this family and this story.

I went with a friend a few years ago to India as a tourist. It was truly a shock for me to see children begging on the streets and babies asleep on the sidewalk. My friend is in the women's health care field, and she went back to India a year later to talk with some village women about healthy practices during pregnancy. She was not permitted to discuss any thing related to the sexual act or the sex organs, like birth control, or ovulation. She drew very simple diagrams to show for her presentation. She had an Indian interpreter. The women could not understand what she or the diagrams meant. The message the interpreter finally got the women to understand was-it is ok not to lift heavy jugs if you are pregnant. You're not lazy, even if your mother in law says you are. Our understanding of how uneducated adults in impoverished countries think and live their lives is unfathomable to us. The cruelty that happens out of ignorance and poverty is frightening. The educated Indians there are disgusted by what the desperate poverty stricken do to survive. The educated are capable of thinking more abstractly and have huge variety of choices. The uneducated are stuck. Being literate has a huge impact to think abstractly and analyze our choices. Such poor people have no choices. And for many women birth control is forbidden to even discuss. So often these people are only able to do simpler work.

This is a tough nut to crack.

My gut says this shouldn't happen. If the producers of the movie have set aside monies for the children, my gut says "daddy's being an opportunist". The high price reflects that.

But I have to also consider that, while not something we Americans see a lot of, our culture is not the only one on this planet. This isn't uncomon elsewhere.

Now throw in...
How many people in America cannot afford to raise a child and adoption is a justified solution?

Granted, it doesn't get the notoriety this story will given the "celebrity status" of Rubina Ali, but how different a standard are we seeing here?

Okay, on my laying low weekend -- didn't this just happen on an eps of "Heroes" So sad Sylar was trying to locate his long lost dad and had a flashback of "yep, you guessed it, being sold off to the highest bidder. Oh how art becomes life.

The issue is I'm sure, goes on all over the world, and yes, this issue now comes to light because of Hollywood. Children, women and men trafficking happens and really needs more light on this sad state of affairs. Need a new wife, two cows. Want more wife's, a house. Want to get rid of your child for the good of the family, give me a few pounds and we'll help you out!

I think I saw this on a Hallmark card in the supermarket the other day. You know, the one that says,"I love you, Daughter. Now get up on the auction block and smile for the highest bidder. Daddy needs some cigarettes". Has anyone else seen it?

How selfish a Father can a man be ???

Willing to sell his daughter to who knows what kind of possible predator out there...

Makes you think about "All these "Pro-Lifers" that say Every Child must be Born.

It also makes you think about all the haters-in-Jesus'-name who think adoption should be barred against loving families with same-gender parents.

Unfortunately, children are sold on a regular basis around the world, often because their parents can't care for them in the most basic manner.

The Great American Complaint is "inconvenience." Children, however, are vastly unable to determine their future.

I'm sure the father will try to have a good family adopt his daughter. Until you have lived in such poverty, quit judging. He's trying to find a better life for his child. I've seen the extreme poverty there and in other 3rd world countries. Have you?
