News Of The World:

THE poverty-stricken father of Slumdog Millionaire child star Rubina Ali plans to become a millionaire himself-by SELLING his nine-year-old daughter.

In a bid to escape India's real-life slums, Rafiq Qureshi put angel-faced darling of the Oscars Rubina up for adoption, demanding millions of rupees worth £200,000.

As he offered the shocking deal to the News of the World's undercover fake sheik this week, Rafiq declared: "I have to consider what's best for me, my family and Rubina's future."

a dirt-poor american would sell their kid for $.5M too. i lot of middle class americans would sell their kid for $200M. It's all relative. and keep in mind...this isn't selling into slavery. it's selling into an adoptive family. no one in India is going to pay $.5M for a kid to abuse. ...to be crude, they could do that on the cheap.

Get outraged by the sex trade why don't you. you people bore me.

Everyone here is having a good joke at Madonna's expense about adopting this child. And some here are very serious, and saying that someone needs to rescue this poor girl.

She, of course, has my sympathy, and if I could adopt her tomorrow I would. But what is the difference between this girl, who's father wants to sell her; and a kid in Malawai who lives in an orphange in perhaps the poorest country on Earth.

If Madonna, or another celebrity, decided to adopt this girl would people here start screeching again saying dont take her away from her family?

No. I'd be supportive. But it doesn't take away from my disgust.

We're not supposed to be cultural relatives these days. It's not politically correct to criticise cultures where women and girls are nothing but property to be bought and sold.

I beg to differ.

Please Madonna, adopt this child.

Did you read the article and see the video attached? News of the World, while tabloid, did conduct an undercover investigation. They have photos and video of the father and uncle trying to sell the little girl. What do you expect the father and uncle to say?

Check out this article in The Times of London, which may be a bit more reliable than The News of the World:

Yes. The Timesonline article is more informative.
The producers have endeavored to secure the film childrens' futures.
They weren't unmindful. They enrolled them in a special school.
They have monies set aside for them...out of their parents reach.
There are emergency funds for them. This was however, apparently
not enough for Rubina's father.
As other postings have stated, the selling of women and children is
a horrid world wide fact. It is a daily occurrence in many many countries.
The film itself was made in part to shine light on the very dangerous,
cut throat abysmal world in which Rubina lives. To have not made the film,
as one posting suggested, would have left scores ignorant of this nightmare
which in innumerable countries is just a fact of life.

I sure don't understand the moral code in India. His daughter is being exploited like so many child stars are. It sure would be a shame to see the daughter used as fodder for money. Who knows how she would be treated. Ever read the story of Patty Duke and how she was used, misused, and exploited? I think Rubina Ali's popularity will wane eventually, unless she can overcome the child celebrity jinx so many child stars eventually go through.

She's not really a "child star." She had a memorable role in an unexpectedly successful film, but will she star on TV, in commercials and in more films?

Women and girls have been considered chattel for a long time. We still haven't got all the states to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment here in our own country. Sad state of affairs for women.

I agree with some of the other posters. He is poor and they continue to have kids? It's not right. And neither is it right that Hollywood isn't giving back to the community.

I think we all need to try to understand this within the cultural context of India. The status of women is abysmal. Girl babies are cause for mourning, and are killed routinely. Dowry murders are common -- wherein the bride is murdered horribly, often by immolation, because her family is unable to increase the dowry which is paid to the groom's family. So, to try to sell his female child for many lifetimes' income, while completely offensive to our western sensibilities, might seem like the most auspicious opportunity to this father. It is the brutal fact that a girl's life is next to worthless in so many parts of the third world.

Maybe Madonna can buy her? Or Angelina Joli? But they only buy kids from Africa or East Asia.

As far as I am concerned this movie should never have been allowed in to theaters...all it has caused is more abuse to these poor children by their parents or "owners".. I feel ashamed that Boyle and the producer have seemed to take advantage of these kids just like their parents...now they are trying to sell the little girl...What kind of people are these...and we did nothing to help except abuse these children ourselves..SHAME ON THE PRODUCERS OF THIS MOVIE......and this beat out Bengamin Button for Best Movie....HA HA

READ THE ARTICLE: Danny Boyle has set up a trust fund for this girl to get a good education and I assume money when she gets older. They have given this girl money. It's just she has to wait. Obviously you see why by father's actions. What's difference between this and a hollywood child's parents trying steal their child star's money? I enjoyed SlumDog alot more than that overrated Button.

Actually, Danny Boyle and his producers not only made an excellent fairy tale of a film, they also showed the world the horrible underbelly of the most heavily populated city in India, the land of mystics, call centers, and devastating systemic poverty. For all the touting of India as the world's most populous democracy and its demonization as the interloper of support and service jobs, we tend to forget that somewhere between a quarter to one half of the country lives on less than $1 a day. The selling of children, often into slavery, sexual or otherwise, is not something that was introduced into Indian culture when Danny Boyle came to town, and you can't blame the filmmakers for the father's desperation and venality.
