NEW YORK — NBC "Today" show news anchor Ann Curry is heading to two war zones this week.

She is traveling to both Iraq and Afghanistan to report on how the wars are being reshaped under the administration of President Barack Obama. Her reports are to air on both the "Today" show and NBC's "Nightly News."

NBC would say little about her specific reports, except that she will be given some unprecedented access. She may also try to do some reporting in Pakistan.

Her "Today" colleague Matt Lauer gets the rep, but Curry has been a real globe-trotter. Since the beginning of 2008, she's tried to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and been to the Congo, Serbia, Pakistan, Japan, China and France. She's been to Darfur four times since 2006.

....speaking of the Today Show -

FAIR's Action Alert calls for people to

ask the Today show to correct host Matt Lauer's false claim that Employee Free Choice Act "would do away with secret ballots." And ask them to interview a supporter of the Employee Free Choice Act--someone who can counter the arguments made against the bill by Wal-Mart CEO Duke.

"She may also try to do some reporting in Pakistan"? Get it right, please. She is not a reporter. She reads the news and does puff piece interviews.

I think Ann is being groomed for something. She's doing too many stories and traveling not to be.

War reporting. From the woman who brought you the Octomom debacle. Damage control?

shespeaks is right. Ms. Curry is a celebrity, not a reporter.

Last year, I was walking down 6th Ave, I tuned in to a very distinctive contralto voice from behind . When i turned, there she was, Anne Curry enjoying the company of her friend. Our eyes meet with a smile. I thanked her for her reports on Chad and Darfur in 2006, very personal journalism.

I like Ann and she will do anything and go anywhere. The only problem is she is heavy on the melodrama in her interviewing and editing.

What most of the detractors of Anne Curry fail to see is that she has been a serious journalist all along. Her style is that of the human interest story. Most news stories are straight, no chaser or just a plain puff pieces. To her credit Ms. Curry has a knack of conveying that human side of the story and too often doesn't get profiled. She has a way of getting her interviewee comfortable and thus conveying something that gets ignored -- the human toll of the story. This is what she does best and she manages to get the respondent to talk openly. IMO she's up there with the likes of Christian Ammanpour and David Frost: She has the gutsiness of Ms. Ammanpour and the learned diplomacy and depth to provide context as does Sir David. Few TV journalists provide the narratives from their subjects as Ms. Curry does.

To twist a phrase from Bill Clinton's presidential campaign against George Bush:
"It's the humanity... stupid."

The news doesn't just disseminate random information. It has the power to connect us to other persons who live across the world who are making the day-to-day struggle as we do, but in another environment. It has to the power to tell us the story that regardless of our distance... we're all essentially the same and where we are different, journalists like Ms. Curry convey the empathy and context to show us how.

Ann Curry came to Oklahoma City on the 14th anniversary of the bombing April 19th. She's insightful and intelligent, and I think she will be a wonderful war correspondent. I pray no harm comes to her on the job.
