Axelrod: Obama Has Made Anti-Americanism Uncool

Axelrod

Responding to the somewhat overwrought critique that Obama did not properly stand up to hostile Latin American leaders during a trip to the region this past week, David Axelrod accused critics of missing the point.

"I think some people misinterpreted what happened this past weekend," said the president's close adviser. "I think the real message of what happened this past weekend with the Cuban regime's response to the president's decision on remittances, or the overtures from president Chavez. I think what has happened is that anti-Americanism isn't cool anymore."

The remarks were delivered during a conference hosted by the Religious Action Center, a Reform Judaism organization that seeks to influence society and politics. And they came as part of a broader attempt to frame the election of Obama as a fundamental resetting of "our relationships in the world."

"I had the honor and the pleasure to travel with him to Europe recently, to the G20 conference, and to NATO and to the EU and finally to Turkey and Iraq," he went on. "It was an extraordinary experience not just to see the way world leaders received Obama but to see the way average citizens in these various countries received him. There were tangible benefits immediate in terms of more money. We pushed hard for more money for the IMF so we could help struggling economies, more money for impoverished and developing nations who are having such a hard time, food security programs, all this came out of the G20 and the United States played a huge role in that."

The crowd, predominantly progressive Jews, was naturally interested in the state of foreign affairs and this administration's approach to the Middle East. Axelrod obliged by reiterating the president's support for a two-state solution between the Israelis and Palestinians, and he laid out the administration's accomplishments on the world stage as such:

"It has been just 100 days," he said. "There have been a lot of difficult decisions to be made and some we never anticipated. The pirate thing was not in the handbook, in any way. By the way, one other thing that was more anticipated and still challenging was the launch of the satellite by North Korea... a provocative act. But as you may have seen we have obtained a strong statement of condemnation out of the United Nations, joined in by the Russians and Chinese. As you look at those things, their willingness to join our country and this president in making that statement... when you look at the fact that the Cubans for the first time are saying we are wiling to talk about democracy, human rights and political prisoners... When you look at the fact that Chavez has said we want to talk about returning ambassadors and restoring relationships, these are first steps. We are not naïve we know there is a long way to go... but I believe we have made great progress."

Obama should have walked out when ortega went on his dictator rant, just like many of the western countries did during achmad's rant of Israel.
12:42 PM on 04/21/2009
Or you can listen to Ortega, the other 2 bit dictator there slamming the US, and Obama doesn't even defend the US. 2 bit dictators telling us how bad the US is. F*** them and their oppressive regimes.

If only Obama went after 2 bit dictators as vigorously as he goes after teabaggers... the world would be a better place.

Most of these readers think that the US is the 'oppressive regime'... they live in a Pr0gressive Universe. Where all of the thug`gish dictat0rs around the world are simply misunderstood... and we only need to reach out to them and smile, and they'll change their murd3r0us ways...

hope...

The Change has been extraordinary.

The combination of the distaste for Bush and the admiration for Obama makes this a complete turnaround in most parts of the world.

Obama has not killed anti-Americanism, but just the stunning fact that the American people elected him, has made America more safe.

People around the world want Obama to succeed.

The free world has finally gotten a leader we can believe in.

This is the 'emotional' voter the conservatives warned us about... It is this blind devotion to a religi0us figure which is unhealthy for society. We typically only see this phenomenon with cu|t of personality leaders...

You have got to be kidding. How dare a Democratic president be popular! It's un-American for the president to be popular, right? I guess so, if you were used to the last 8 years. However, if this was a Republican president getting these accolades, I suppose you'd just call him St. Reagan.

There is no blind devotion; this is simple fact. I daresay the world would be cheering on anyone other than Bush, and the mere fact that we Americans have changed course so completely has given the world pause. They can't have a kneejerk reaction to the US like in the past because the game has changed. We have proven that we can change course, peacefully (for the most part) and that our democratic system worked so well this time. ( I for one have had no faith in our elections since 2000. ) That's what Pres. Obama embodies.

No one seems to think that Pres. Obama is a messiah except for Rush. As a Christian, I find that idea repulsive. No wonder it came from Rush. And your last statement was pretty much word-for-word Rush Limbaugh. I know, because I listen to him almost everyday.

Critics such as Pat Buchanon, Newt Gingridge, Rush Limbaugh and Company aren't worried about Truth.

Truth has absolutely nothing to do with their critique, they are foaming at the mouth Racist that have been discredited time and time again.

All this is about is the Tarnishing of a great man called to do great things. The Republicans have totally missed the boat on this historic opportunity to map out the First African American President.

Instead they display their seething racism and attempt to re-lable it. The sad part about all of this is
they will never be able to offer History and honest assessment about President Barack Obama because they can't see past their hatred of him.

How can the Republicans see their way clear when they have been blinded by Racism and Hate for everyon that is not like them???????????

A many in the Media have allowed the Republican Party to HiJack their Journalistic Integrity.

The Media outlets that have broken from the Republican spell have become our heros as they report the truth and offer critism that has merit. Yeah keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could not agree more. Thank you!

War crimes aren't cool either, Mr. Axelrod. What's REALLY not cool is an administration who fails to investigate criminal activities from those who commit war crimes within this country and by this country's power.

It takes more than a charismatic leader to make America 'cool' again. It takes compassion, fairness and honesty in the way that Americans treat other nations and their people.

America represents 5% of the worlds population and some Americans recently caused a massive global economic collapse. The other 95% didn't find that too cool.

You have a glossy eyed stare that is rare on 'independent voters' such as yourself.
09:15 AM on 04/21/2009
I didn't take Obama to convince me that anti-Americanism wasn't my choice of qualities and values a person ought to posses. My parents did that. Along with studying American history.
09:42 AM on 04/21/2009
Which history books did you read? The truthful ones will give you every reason to be highly pissed at the way we have conducted ourselves throughout history. Our motives have almost never been about promoting a peaceful, productive, sustainable existance on this planet.

Every county in the world has done things that are inappropriate or wrong in its history. Look at Europe. Look at their history. Pretty raunchy in some areas. What has the US done? Created the greatest document in the world, changed and righted many of the wrongs it did. Why apologize for that? Why not praise it?

It's not un-American to admit your country's mistakes while correcting them. It's called maturity. Own up to what you did wrong, and be a man about it. Then move on.

Study American history some, and learn about the CIA coup in Iran in the 50s that directly led up to the overthrow of the Shah. We were directly involved because British Petroleum was getting a sweet deal from the Shah and when the Iranians elected a new president who wanted to nationalize their oil industry for their country's good and not give away their resources to the UK and by extension the US, that's when the CIA swept in and the elected president was thrown out. The Shah remained, the people eventually revolted, and now look where we are. But because we share some responsibility and should own up to it, that's not un-American.

My parents taught me to tell the truth and admit your mistakes.
09:13 AM on 04/21/2009
More accurately, President Obama laid the groundwork for combating anti-American propaganda. Going to be tricky for Chavez to call Obama "the devil" after shaking his hand and calling him "my friend."
09:25 AM on 04/21/2009
Yea....just look how good it made Obama look (not)...

Uncool.
Can't accuse the rest of the world of being unpatriotic, so "uncool" is what they came up with.
That's a whole new level for the white house spindoctors. Gotta admit they're creative, but then they are just a giant PR machine.
Just tell the rest of the world they're "uncool".
Sarkozy, Merkel: you're uncool. That's going to really bother them.

Oh my. It would be funny if not so pathetic.

I think its time for President Obama to go on the road again to immerse himself with the American people so he can get his head on straight on this torture issue. He is losing his way. He knows he is wrong on this issue. He doesnt even seem convinced that he is doing the right thing himself so I dont know how he is going to convince us.

This is all about political expediency. And it is amazing how many liberals have fallen into lock-step behind Obama on this ....

Saying liberals fall into lock-step about anything is funny, when all Repubs follow Rush and Hannity on all issues - period. I NEVER saw any Repubs question Bush/Cheney for 8 years, I see Democratic Congressman question Obama on a daily basis!
09:17 AM on 04/21/2009
Not to excuse President Obama but maybe just maybe the American people have been suffering and being smothered under high healthcare cost they think thats more important. He needs to get back out and get a feel for how the American people feel on this issue. You call it political expediency others call hearing the cries of the American people the cries that have been ignored for far too long cries on healthcare now if you think its political expeidency to focus on healthcare instead of then so be it.

I find your generalization of liberals INSULTING. It tells me that you are NOT Liberal. Because contrary to what you think Liberals can continue to support the President but DISAGREE with him on this issue which is what I'm sensing from them. You on the other hand just seem to want to make trouble and for that I refuse to engage you

If you dislike a nations foreign policy it does not equal anti-americanism.
Some people really want to simplify this all too much.

Gosh, he's replaced a bad prison in Guantanamo with a groovy one at the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. And, he's pardoning torturers - what a cool guy! He's expanding the war in Afghanistan and using drones to attack villages in Pakistan - I'll bet the graphics on those drone stations in Colorado are awesome!! What a hipster!!
