I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Axelrod

Responding to the somewhat overwrought critique that Obama did not properly stand up to hostile Latin American leaders during a trip to the region this past week, David Axelrod accused critics of missing the point.

"I think some people misinterpreted what happened this past weekend," said the president's close adviser. "I think the real message of what happened this past weekend with the Cuban regime's response to the president's decision on remittances, or the overtures from president Chavez. I think what has happened is that anti-Americanism isn't cool anymore."

The remarks were delivered during a conference hosted by the Religious Action Center, a Reform Judaism organization that seeks to influence society and politics. And they came as part of a broader attempt to frame the election of Obama as a fundamental resetting of "our relationships in the world."

"I had the honor and the pleasure to travel with him to Europe recently, to the G20 conference, and to NATO and to the EU and finally to Turkey and Iraq," he went on. "It was an extraordinary experience not just to see the way world leaders received Obama but to see the way average citizens in these various countries received him. There were tangible benefits immediate in terms of more money. We pushed hard for more money for the IMF so we could help struggling economies, more money for impoverished and developing nations who are having such a hard time, food security programs, all this came out of the G20 and the United States played a huge role in that."

The crowd, predominantly progressive Jews, was naturally interested in the state of foreign affairs and this administration's approach to the Middle East. Axelrod obliged by reiterating the president's support for a two-state solution between the Israelis and Palestinians, and he laid out the administration's accomplishments on the world stage as such:

"It has been just 100 days," he said. "There have been a lot of difficult decisions to be made and some we never anticipated. The pirate thing was not in the handbook, in any way. By the way, one other thing that was more anticipated and still challenging was the launch of the satellite by North Korea... a provocative act. But as you may have seen we have obtained a strong statement of condemnation out of the United Nations, joined in by the Russians and Chinese. As you look at those things, their willingness to join our country and this president in making that statement... when you look at the fact that the Cubans for the first time are saying we are wiling to talk about democracy, human rights and political prisoners... When you look at the fact that Chavez has said we want to talk about returning ambassadors and restoring relationships, these are first steps. We are not naïve we know there is a long way to go... but I believe we have made great progress."

Dream on Gr. an. dad.

It is completely possible to fervently pro-Obama and hugely anti-Ne. 0c. 0n. Ask me how I know.

Anti-Ne. 0c. 0n includes distrusting the US government for, oh, about fifty years to come.

They weren't called "the crazies" for nothing in the early 80's.

Obama has done tremendous things in 100 days, under amazingly tough circumstances. I don't care what the non-important Republicans think, but Obama's supporters needs to grow up, look at the whole picture and stop bashing him, or they'll end up crown some Palin in 2012.

I think you are right that he has done tremendous things.

I think people are less interested in bashing him and more interested in getting the big issues right...i'm sorry that is far from happening.

I'm as happy about Cuba as anyone, and the success of the European trip, and the Americas trip and all the little bits of legislation that have overturned Bush idiocy.

But the bailout is as disingenuous as the people he appointed; Afghanistan is against the people's will and you cannot wage war when the country is against it; his stance on Gaza is nonexistent.

You seem to forget Howard Dean is out there and he has many supporters and sooner or later the GOP will produce a good and decent person to run. If Obama continues with rubberstamping and even augmenting the Bush doctrine in the middle east, and refused to enforce our laws regarding torture, and fails to clean up the banking industry, he will be one and out.....

And you think whoever the GOP may come up with sonner or later will be different from the GOP party?

Sure, something will rise from the ashes of the GOP that is good and decent, but it's a generation away. The old guys who still have their withered old claws on the mechanisms of party power will not suddenly look at themselves and go "Wow, our time has passed, let's see what vibrant young leaders are out there and let ourselves be led!" Instead they think "Who can we set up to look like a vibrant young leader so we can sell this whole 'vibrant young leader' thing and of course absolutely refuse to let him/her actually lead?" They refuse to get out of the way, you're dreaming if you think anything but death or revolution in their party will get rid of them. This is their nightmare. Does the old lion or old silverback just retire and let the best of the up and comers take over? No, the up and comer has to absolutely crush him and the old one either dies right there or is expelled and dies alone. They do not have a way of dealing with generational shifts of power like this.

We are living in a world were some countries wont even accept the dollar , how can we remain on such a high horse. Please wake up the world is changing around you. Countries are not as dependent on Amercia as they once were. Open your eyes, let the man do his job. Who cares about a handshake. If it achieves the desired results the so be it. We make a big fuss about nothing. Wake up

I was just in Europe, and it's true. They have momentarily lost the justification to reflexively bash the US in every conversation.

But good luck getting them to agree to just "look forward" away from torture prosecutions. If we are, as the president said today, a nation "of law," then what about the requirement to pursue war criminals?

It's hard to sell "hate this guy" when the guy isn't giving you a reason to hate him. Bush was a easy sell.

It may be that the people who want to appear "cool," don't really matter anyway, whether they're anti or pro-American. It may be that the only effect these people have, however they feel about the US, is that they make Americans who prefer to be "cool," as opposed to being "uncool," feel uncomfortable. And maybe the whole bunch both inside or outside the US don't amount to a hill of beans in the scheme of things anyway.

Maybe they're just congenitally frivolous. And Obama's ability to win these people isn't nearly as important as the other stuff he's doing with regard to the economy and the environment.

South American countries and their people have every right to be disgusted with north america and their behavior these past 60 years. That behavior has been brutal, exploytive, insulting, disrespectfull, arrogant and simple disgusting and murderous.

It has persipitated murder and theft of those countries natural resources and a total disregard for the well being of the peoples of South American countries.

It is quite remarkable that those countries' peoples will even be in the same room with Americans and clearly shows their level of intelligence as compared to the brutal mentality of past American behavior.

Congratulations Obama for a remarkable first step towards frendly neighbors with respect.
Simply impressive.

Closing http::/ www.soaw.orgg would be another truely fine indicator of changed American behavior.

The old "Evil America" whine.

You should read up on how governments in South America treat their own citizens, and citizens of neighboring countries. You'd really be disgusted.

But that would require an open mind.

What a great guy we have as a president. He is not only helping us change, he will help the rest of the world change as well. Nice to see a leader for a change. Nice to see someone who is more interested in working things out than starting another war. Wow, almost unbelievable unless you think about the really great U.S. presidents, they all understood the importance of reason and intelligence and fairness over greed, brute power and ignorance. Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and FDR, they all had one thing in common with Obama being courageous enough to step up and do the right thing when our country most needed it.
