I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Axelrod

Responding to the somewhat overwrought critique that Obama did not properly stand up to hostile Latin American leaders during a trip to the region this past week, David Axelrod accused critics of missing the point.

"I think some people misinterpreted what happened this past weekend," said the president's close adviser. "I think the real message of what happened this past weekend with the Cuban regime's response to the president's decision on remittances, or the overtures from president Chavez. I think what has happened is that anti-Americanism isn't cool anymore."

The remarks were delivered during a conference hosted by the Religious Action Center, a Reform Judaism organization that seeks to influence society and politics. And they came as part of a broader attempt to frame the election of Obama as a fundamental resetting of "our relationships in the world."

"I had the honor and the pleasure to travel with him to Europe recently, to the G20 conference, and to NATO and to the EU and finally to Turkey and Iraq," he went on. "It was an extraordinary experience not just to see the way world leaders received Obama but to see the way average citizens in these various countries received him. There were tangible benefits immediate in terms of more money. We pushed hard for more money for the IMF so we could help struggling economies, more money for impoverished and developing nations who are having such a hard time, food security programs, all this came out of the G20 and the United States played a huge role in that."

The crowd, predominantly progressive Jews, was naturally interested in the state of foreign affairs and this administration's approach to the Middle East. Axelrod obliged by reiterating the president's support for a two-state solution between the Israelis and Palestinians, and he laid out the administration's accomplishments on the world stage as such:

"It has been just 100 days," he said. "There have been a lot of difficult decisions to be made and some we never anticipated. The pirate thing was not in the handbook, in any way. By the way, one other thing that was more anticipated and still challenging was the launch of the satellite by North Korea... a provocative act. But as you may have seen we have obtained a strong statement of condemnation out of the United Nations, joined in by the Russians and Chinese. As you look at those things, their willingness to join our country and this president in making that statement... when you look at the fact that the Cubans for the first time are saying we are wiling to talk about democracy, human rights and political prisoners... When you look at the fact that Chavez has said we want to talk about returning ambassadors and restoring relationships, these are first steps. We are not naïve we know there is a long way to go... but I believe we have made great progress."

At first, from the headline picture, I thought that old guy was Joseph Stiglietz (sp?) the economist

who says Obama is letting Wall Streeters run the show and that's been shown to be
a huge mistake.

But , of course, that would be impossible. Obama is totally insulated & has left the house.

and the supreme court will overrule the charge if its brought up before them.and will let them go.so its just a waste of time for now.there is no staute of limitations for these crimes .lots of time in the future to bring them up on charges.unless another country doesnt come for them first.lol

I don't think so. I think he's going to let the DOJ handle it. IMO, his priority is getting this economy turned around; getting health care, education reform and getting us off of foreign oil. Sure I want to see these thugs prosecuted, but I don't think he will be able to get his agenda passed if he takes the lead on this. Also, he's got to be concerned with national security and the CIA is a big player.

Obama is playing it Smart...

He's creating a distance between himself and the imminent investigations and prosecutions. Especially on this politically sensitive issue.

The White House can not have undue influence over the Justice Department.... it's illegal..

So when the DOJ jumps in with all fours bearing claws ....
Obama can say...." That's up to the Justice Department... it's out of my hands "

i am still confused as to who has the power to prosecute. i always thought anything to with prosecution making the decision to or not was up to the doj, congress and the courts. not the president.

"uncool"???
What kind of demographic is this aimed at?
America has been doing at whole lot of "uncool" stuff on many fronts for a long time.
Stop doing it and you can actually not be "uncool" What the hell does he think - it's just a PR problem?

Do you think saving Europe in ww2 is uncool?
Do you think trying to stop a h0locaust in southeast Asia is uncool?
Do you think sending the most foreign aid to the 3rd world countries is uncool?
Do you think liberating 25 million in Iraq is uncool?
Do you think sending massive amounts of resources around the world is uncool?

No other country in history has done more good will around the world... and yet it is despised.

Ever wonder why this is?

Do you? What makes you think we've been perfect? Just all this torture stuff is enough to gag me. Is it okay with you that the Bush administration engaged in such barbarity? Or how about how we treated the Native Americans? Slavery? Jim Crow? Japanese internment camps? There are a lot of things we have done that are not up to our own standards, and you wonder why we are despised? A little humility, as President Obama has shown, will go a long way in helping our relationships mend. You should be grateful for his leadership, not constantly engaged in slamming him at every opportunity. I can't imagine anyone better for the job.

"Just because we did some good in the two world wars means we can build an empire"

Supporting Saddam, Suharto, Shah etc.. are were good acts right?

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article4068.htm

Why? Lets ask.

'They hate our policies, not our freedom'
'Mslims do not hate our freedom, but rather they hate our policies [the Pntagon report says]. The overwhelming majority voice their objections to what they see as one-sided support in favor of Irael and against Plestinian rights, and the long-standing, even increasing, support for what Mslims collectively see as tyrannies, most notably Eypt, Sadi Aabia, Jodan, Pkistan and the Glf sttes. Thus, when American public diplomacy talks about bringing democracy to Islamic societies, this is seen as no more than self-serving hypocrisy.'

I don't wonder at all.

I think SAYING you're trying to stop a holocaust in SE Asia is uncool when the truth is you're there in furtherance of powerful corporate interests.

I think you can talk about foreign aid until your tongue bleeds, but our farm subsidy program in the US is a major factor in why people in 3rd world countries can no longer feed themselves. Check into that -- our policies attempt to make them reliant on our food production by deliberately undercutting theirs.

I think lying to a nation to gain its support to invade another nation, then toppling a bad regime with NO PLAN about how to stabilize things during the ensuing chaos is near criminal and makes the US complicit in the deaths of thousands of innocent Iraqis. So, no, not that cool, really.

I think that being a materialistic nation that constitutes 5% of the world's population but uses something like 59% of the world's resources, whose entire economy is based on an unsustainable drive to create and sell an ever-increasing amount of JUNK is not so cool either.

But mostly I think that the little icon do-hickey next to your comments looks like a little pr!ck. Suits you to a T.

I lived in Europe from 1993 until 2004 and I watched the reputation of my country go from being soooo cool to being in the toilet. The change happened after George Bush started talking about invading Iraq.

The problem is this: The world is mostly composed of social democracies, s0cialist states, leftist authoritarian states and a variety of assorted c0mmunist states... along with a few monarchies thrown in.

Since most of the world is less educated and less informed, they believe that America is the enemy of humanity. So it should be no surprise that most of the world doesn't like America, simply because they don't have a clear understanding of history. It's not their fault. Tyrants like Chav3z control the media, so his people think of America the way Chav3z wants them to think.

So when you hear people say... the world disagrees with or ha`tes America, you should take that with a grain of salt.

When Bush went on a foreign trip he was met by protests, demonstrations and riots at every stop. When Obama goes on a foreign trip he is met by cheering crowds of well-wishers waving American flags.

It's nice to have a leader that people actually like. Plus it annoys the h.ell out of the Republicans. Two for one!

That was NOTHING...I watched in person the Italians marching in Rome when Bush came to see the Pope (who told him NOT to invade Iraq)...every Italian in the country had a PACE (peace) flag hanging in their window. The emotion was real, they knew Bush was wrong, all the people in the world who had been dealing with terrorism knew that Bush was wrong.

Now when we travel back to Europe, all they want to talk about is how great that Americans have a leader to be proud of. We have redeemed our ourselves!

It's ridiculus to be upset about him shaking hands and conversing with Chavez. People could be upset about him meeting with Egypt of China's leaders when there are extreme human rights violations in those countries not to mention their adverse effect on our economy through oil price manipulation and trade deficits. It is just a hype story.

Especially when Rachel Maddow showed all kinds of pictures of US Presidents smiling and shaking hands with various communist rulers that were heartily despised here and posed real threats to our country. I don't recall any big flap over those photos. Of course, it was a long time ago, but somehow I doubt it. Did very many people get weirded out when Bush walked hand in hand with the Saudi Arabian king and kissed him on both cheeks? I don't recall that either. Seems to me that's a heluva lot worse than a quick bow, if one is going to worry about these things...
