I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Axelrod

Responding to the somewhat overwrought critique that Obama did not properly stand up to hostile Latin American leaders during a trip to the region this past week, David Axelrod accused critics of missing the point.

"I think some people misinterpreted what happened this past weekend," said the president's close adviser. "I think the real message of what happened this past weekend with the Cuban regime's response to the president's decision on remittances, or the overtures from president Chavez. I think what has happened is that anti-Americanism isn't cool anymore."

The remarks were delivered during a conference hosted by the Religious Action Center, a Reform Judaism organization that seeks to influence society and politics. And they came as part of a broader attempt to frame the election of Obama as a fundamental resetting of "our relationships in the world."

"I had the honor and the pleasure to travel with him to Europe recently, to the G20 conference, and to NATO and to the EU and finally to Turkey and Iraq," he went on. "It was an extraordinary experience not just to see the way world leaders received Obama but to see the way average citizens in these various countries received him. There were tangible benefits immediate in terms of more money. We pushed hard for more money for the IMF so we could help struggling economies, more money for impoverished and developing nations who are having such a hard time, food security programs, all this came out of the G20 and the United States played a huge role in that."

The crowd, predominantly progressive Jews, was naturally interested in the state of foreign affairs and this administration's approach to the Middle East. Axelrod obliged by reiterating the president's support for a two-state solution between the Israelis and Palestinians, and he laid out the administration's accomplishments on the world stage as such:

"It has been just 100 days," he said. "There have been a lot of difficult decisions to be made and some we never anticipated. The pirate thing was not in the handbook, in any way. By the way, one other thing that was more anticipated and still challenging was the launch of the satellite by North Korea... a provocative act. But as you may have seen we have obtained a strong statement of condemnation out of the United Nations, joined in by the Russians and Chinese. As you look at those things, their willingness to join our country and this president in making that statement... when you look at the fact that the Cubans for the first time are saying we are wiling to talk about democracy, human rights and political prisoners... When you look at the fact that Chavez has said we want to talk about returning ambassadors and restoring relationships, these are first steps. We are not naïve we know there is a long way to go... but I believe we have made great progress."

Amen to Axelrod's comments. We knew we had a lot of reparation to do in world opinion and respect after the last 8 years and this is exactly what is happening. In my opinion, it is quite unfortunate that some Americans are more interested in being divisive than in moving forward, ideology aside.

Don't pop the cork on the champaigne just yet, Dave! It's going to take more than a couple of months' worth of handshakes and high-flying speeches to pull this country out of the pigpen Bush got us in. You might want to start by cleaning up some of this leftover war crimes stuff. You may be willing to let bygones be bygones, but not everyone sees it your way. Every day that George Bush grins from his exclusive neighborhood in Texas and Dick Cheney does another interview with Fox News, America appears to have no respect for international law.

This is why people see America different then the RNC Hood n Sheets party.

My granny was born in Dumas, Arkansas in 1916. She had to walk 10 miles to go to school because she was the wrong color (even though her eyes are blue). At the age of 13 some white boys thought they could have some fun so they drove through her part of town and start some party. You know the kind of good ole party. It was a Sunday my granny, mother and brothers and sisters were at an evening service at church and the white boys decided to burn the most homes they could regardless who in it in that part of town. Fortunately my great grand father was in there that is right my granny father. He partially blind and when the men came not only did they burn the house but my they found him and hung him on the tree right in front of my grannys' burning home. That is the America I know. So anything that Obama does to help you RNC Hoods n sheets look better you should get on your hand and knees and thank God for him.

Let me enlighten you on the America of today. Sure, are there groups of people that would still do what some did to your grandfather 93 years ago?Absolutely. Do most of us think they are dangerous nutjobs?Absolutely. Are there dangerous black men that would just as soon kill you than have you drive down their street. Absolutely. Are there young boys, that would attack you for walking down the street because you are the wrong color and because you are wearing the wrong color hat? Absolutely. BUT chitown8, there is another America that is MOST of America and is the America that contains black and white who traveled to Dumas to aid the mostly black population after a tornado; and church groups (those right wing Christian nuts) who traveled many miles and brought water and aid and food for Katrina victims in MS and NO; and brave soldiers and police and firemen and teachers and preachers and volunteers and adoptive families who don't give a rat's ass about the color of someone's skin but of the content of the person's character...and sometimes not even that. That's America today and what America was BEFORE DURING AND AFTER Barack Obama.I don't care if he's black, if he's more Kenyan or more Kansan. I DON'T CARE! I differ in viewpoint, will continue to do so until something changes. America has done things that she should not be proud of but she has done ALOT for the world and its people.

I don't disagree with most of your assessment. But I didn't read anything in chitown8's comments that implied that all white folks are like the ones he mentioned. What I understood from his comments is that people may have this negative perception of @merica, based on the past history and even present day h@+e groups. People stereotype. Many people see young bl@ck men in this nation as thugs. Even though the majority of young bl@ck men have never committed a crime. Many of us are naive to the conditions that others live in. I was amazed at the comments from some that they didn't know people were as poor as those in the 9th Ward in New Orleans. If Katrina hadn't struck, perhaps they still wouldn't know. On the other hand you have people that have only traveled a few miles from their homes. That's all they know. Not to single out a specific state, but I saw older bl@cks living in WV their whole lives and all they knew was the big0try they had lived with.

There is something to this. Yanks abroad have been reporting since the election that they've been receiving friendlier treatment from the locals - for a change. Quite remarkable and most welcome. I won't have to strain so hard to be unremarkable when I travel to Europe again.

A totally ridiculous comment 1776. It doesn't matter who does or doesn't like us. What does matter is that world leaders can communicate with one another in bilateral and multilateral talks to solve common problems and address common interests. That is a much better and more sustainable option than endless war.

just received this - pass it on:

MSNBC has a poll up about the President's job in his first 100 days. Republicans are flooding it with F-votes and "winning."

As of now the Republicans are casting ballots in this poll and the Grade "F" is at 45% -- and we KNOW this is not reflective of the country!!

Please forward this e-mail to all those that you can...our President needs our help. His 100 day mark is approaching fast, so make your vote count ... AGAIN !! :)
PLEASE VOTE, and pass it on! http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29493093/

If that's of any comfort to the Republicans, let them have it. I know how I'll vote 4 years from now, and it won't be them.

Good point Kindmusica. That isn't a scientific poll and means nothing. The Republicans like to throw out trash like this to make themselves feel good. Our votes in 2010 and 2012 will be what counts. We're looking forward in Ky to ridding ourselves of Senator Jim Bunning-R.

Not everyone that disagrees with Obama is a republican even though you only recognize 2 parties. It's just ignorant to think that there are only 2 options.

This poll is over a month old and meaningless as the righties bombarded it immediately. No use in voting.

Well, it's down to 44% now. Hopefully, those who actually watch MSNBC will get the message. This is the first I've heard about it. I did vote, btw. Thanks!

Yes, he sure has made anti-Americanism uncool, with his diplomatic attitude.
Now they have no reason to blame or hate us anymore, because we took the high road and extended our hand. Now it's their time to "unclench their fists", like the President said. If they don't, well...everybody will see who the j e r k is! It won't be us!
