Jane Harman Recorded On Wiretap Promising to Intervene for AIPAC, Say Sources

Rep. Jane Harman , the California Democrat with a longtime involvement in intelligence issues, was overheard on an NSA wiretap telling a suspected Israeli agent that she would lobby the Justice Department reduce espionage-related charges against two officials of the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee, the most powerful pro-Israel organization in Washington.

Harman was recorded saying she would "waddle into" the AIPAC case "if you think it'll make a difference," according to two former senior national security officials familiar with the NSA transcript.

Thanks for your posts and the information provided. I take information from both sides with a grain of salt but you really do your homework. You've opened yourself up to be labeled anti-Semitic. That approach is intellectually dishonest and lazy. One can support Israelis and the state of Israel without supporting the government's foreign policy or its policy toward Palestinians.

"David Szady, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s former top counterintelligence official who ran the investigation of Mr. Rosen and Mr. Weissman, said in an interview Monday that he was confident Ms. Harman had never intervened. “In all my dealings with her, she was always professional and never tried to intervene or get in the way of any investigation,” Mr. Szady said.

The officials who were familiar with the transcripts, speaking on condition of anonymity because the issue involved intelligence matters, also said they knew of no evidence that Ms. Harman had intervened in the case."

Yes, but she agreed to intervene, and in trade for Mr. Saban to threaten Nancy Pelosi with negative financial and political consequences if she did NOT appoint Harman to head the intelligence committee. That, in and of itself, is, if not illegal, such a devastatingly indictment of her credibility (she trades interfering with the prosecution of spies for her own personal and political gain) that she should step down for that alone.

The reason that none of it ever actually HAPPENED is because rumors of this came to light. It was REPORTED on, and Pelosi PUBLICLY told Saban to F.O. (quoted in news storries, ect.) and she did not even consider Harman because she was clearly (more important, publicly) compromised.

However, it still remains to be seen whether her conversation (ending with "this conversation never happened") is a crime in and of itself.

If I am not mistaken, I've seen you post in the past in an effort to shoo people away from AIPAC related stories with similar (don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain) logic.

I think your days of ever credibly going to bat for them is finally over.

Pardon me for interjecting at this juncture but as someone who does not live in your country i must admit to my astonishment that some of you here feel that the tiny nation of Israel has such a disproportional amount of influence on your great Nation. Perhaps it is because we can be detached sufficiently to be more objective in our observations, but to us the reality of the situation is the exact opposite.

They do have a certain amount of "pull", to be sure, as do other nations more powerful in both economic and geo-political arenas, but we cannot help but notice that the interests of the oil-producing nations exert a considerable amount more influence on your foreign policy. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, come first to mind.

I'm not familiar with Representative Harman's record on these matters, but what I could cull from cursory research has not shown a single scintilla of evidence that her positions on official matters have been swayed but such pressures.

I do, however, find it odd that Attorney General Gonzales became personally embroiled in this escapade at a time when he himself was being targeted for his role in using your intelligence operation to surveil members of your own government.

This has all of the earmarks of a "sting" operation, if I might be so bold as to point out. One that would, in my opinion, be better scrutinised than this red herring.

It is highly probable that NSA was privy to the Harman conversation because of American counter intelligence measures regarding Israel. Usually, there would be a foreign connection for a NSA wire tap. Conjecture would lead one to believe that NSA was monitoring an Israeli "person of interest” and Representative Harman was not a target. She was snagged in the net because of her Israeli contact,

Another reason for the timing of the ‘Harman Leak” is the upcoming espionage trial of Rosen and Weismann, the former AIPAC employees accused of passing U.S. intelligence to Israel. There has been concern among individuals involved that charges would be diminished or dismissed. This puts the judge and Harman-type politicos on notice. The case is not going to be easily swept away.

The case against Harman is more intriguing, because then CIA Director Porter Goss had initially green-lighted urgent action. During his tenure at Langley, Goss was considered an ally of politically favored "Hill Pukes." He was also blamed by many career officers for the departure of two excellent and well regarded CIA professionals: Stephen Kappes and Michael Sulick. For Goss to agree on pursuing Harman speaks volumes.

(Footnote: Kappes and Sulick have now returned to the CIA)
