Stephen Hawking Hospitalized, Very Sick

LONDON — Stephen Hawking, the British mathematician and physicist famed for his work on black holes, was rushed to a hospital Monday and was seriously ill, Cambridge University said. Hawking has been fighting a chest infection for several weeks and was being treated at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, the university city northeast of London, the university said.

"Professor Hawking is very ill," said Gregory Hayman, the university's head of communications. "He is undergoing tests. He has been unwell for a couple of weeks."

Later in the afternoon, Hayman said Hawking was "now comfortable but will be kept in hospital overnight."

The illness had caused Hawking to cancel an appearance at Arizona State University on April 6.

Hawking, 67, gained renown for his work on black holes, and has remained active despite being diagnosed at 21 with ALS, (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), an incurable degenerative disorder also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

For some years, Hawking has been almost entirely paralyzed, and he communicates through an electronic voice synthesizer activated by his fingers.

Hawking was involved in the search for the great goal of physics _ a "unified theory" _ which would resolve contradictions between Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which describes the laws of gravity that govern the motion of large objects like planets, and the Theory of Quantum Mechanics, which deals with the world of subatomic particles.

"A complete, consistent unified theory is only the first step: our goal is a complete understanding of the events around us, and of our own existence," he wrote in his best-selling book, "A Brief History of Time," published in 1988.

In a more accessible sequel "The Universe in a Nutshell," published in 2001, Hawking ventured into concepts like supergravity, naked singularities and the possibility of a universe with 11 dimensions.

He announced last year that he would step down from his post as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a title once held by the great 18th-century physicist Isaac Newton. However, the university said Hawking intended to continue working as Emeritus Lucasian Professor of Mathematics.

"Professor Hawking is a remarkable colleague. We all hope he will be amongst us again soon," said Peter Haynes, head of the university's Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.

Brian Dickie, director of research at the Motor Neurone Disease Association, said only 5 percent of people diagnosed with ALS survive for 10 years or longer.

I've just read an article on the BBC, where Professor is expect to make a full recovery and will return home very soon.

BBC News: 04/21/09
Quote: "A Cambridge University spokesman said: "Professor Hawking is being kept in for observation at Addenbrooke's Hospital... he is comfortable and his family is looking forward to him making a full recovery."

Universal Energy - protect and encircle the Professor with all goodness. Allow a way for help, (a cure) to come soon.

I wonder what thoughts Mr.Stephen Hawking's is really thinking of at this moment, and if He's logging those thoughts too.

Hopefully Mr.Hawking's will do all that's within his being to stay within this known Universe!

It's truly amazing that he has lasted this long. When he was diagnosed he was given about two years. Yet he survived to teach a whole generation how to think outside the box. I hope he will continue a while longer but if he does not he has already left a great legacy, not only for his scientific contributions but as a living testimony to man's will to live.

I am indebted to Stephen Hawking for opening up my mind to quite wondrous things. Cannot believe that he has lived this long and been so productive with ALS. What a man!

Hawking is amazing. He has hung on with ALS for so long. I cant' imagine having that incredible brain in a body totally failing because of Lou Gerhig's.
Most die much earlier than this or lose their cognitive functions. He has a will to live and he has. Whatever happens in the next few days, Stephen Hawking's mind has opened up vast new vistas in Quantum physics and will influence our science for centuries...if our species survives that long.

Here's to a brave, true lion Heart: Stephen Hawking, VALE!

One has to admire this man not only for his genius in theoretical and quantum physics, but also as a man who did not allow a debilitating disease stop him from his life’s work.
Get well soon Dr. Hawking, the world still needs people of your caliber to teach and inspire us all.

Goodfeathers said, "I really wonder if any Ne0C0n knows who Steven Hawkings is?"

Well, I am the opposite of a Neocon or Conservative, but I was saddened by this statement. Why the need to say something derogatory about the other side? Does it make you feel somehow special or above others?

Stephen Hawkings is a much better person with a greater heart and mind than to want negative energy put out to the universe. God bless you, Professor, may you conquer this setback.

In spirit Stephen Hawking will be remembered long after most of us are gone and forgotten. I do hope and pray, however, that he will remain with us in both spirit and body until he and his colleagues have resolved the mysteries of a "unified theory" and beyond.

We are hoping for your speedy recovery Mr. Hawking. Still lots to be discovered! Thanks.
