Eu Britain Singing

Times Online:

Boyle is aware that some of the cynicism that greeted her arrival on stage at the Britain's Got Talent audition stemmed from her frumpy appearance. She wore a gold lace dress that she'd bought for her nephew's wedding but left her unruly hair uncombed and her face free of make-up. "I know what they were thinking but why should it matter as long as I can sing? It's not a beauty contest," she says.

At the superficial end of the entertainment industry, however, appearance is paramount. Is she afraid she might come under pressure to have a makeover?

"Maybe I'll consider a makeover later on," she laughs. "For now I'm happy the way I am -- short and plump. I would not go in for Botox or anything like that. I'm content with the way I look. What's wrong with looking like Susan Boyle? What's the matter with that?"

well GOOD FOR YOU Susan and thanks! You have no idea the positive message you are sending to young adults and adults that you can and should accept the way you look and that confidence in yourself is just as important if not than your physical appearance. It's so rare to see and hear something different and positive being sent out there in public by a public persona in a superficially-obsessed society.

She has a beautiful voice, she doesn't need botox, I would like to see her get her eyebrows shaped, other then that she's fine just the way she is.

And her hair combed.

If you look at Ms. Boyle's facial bone structure, she's only about 20-30 pounds and an eyebrow-shaping away from being attractive, in the conventional sense.

Girl, plastic surgery is a good thing, a face lift and facial rejuvenation, blepharoplasty, chemical peel, botox injections, laser to remove the facial hair, cosmetic dentistry and bang you are ready to go. Don't be fooled, society is shallow and still all about the looks especially in showbiz.

She is ten times as beautiful on the inside as everyone sees her as homely on the outside. Leave her alone.

She just need to do the basics like trim her bushy eyebrows. That's just a part of good grooming. There is nothing sexist about that. And she wonders why she's not married. Sheesh!

I can guess why you probably aren't married, and if you are, I feel sorry for her (or him).

Well, if someone married you, clearly unattractive people can get married. Like trim off that 80's 'stache...

I think the reaction to Susan relates more to how we judge women and how women are led to judge themselves. I haven't seen a lot of commentary on that subject. Men can get away with just about anything as long as they dress nice and are well groomed. Women have to go to extraordinary lengths to measure up to society's shallow standards of beauty, which is the first yard stick they are measured by for worth. A lot is lost in the process. It is a shallow practice because it is so basic to our consumerism, like fast food that tastes good but is bad for you. Women judge themselves mercilessly throughout their short appearance lives only to be thrown away many times because of age and appearance. So why shouldn't we cry when we hear Susan? Susan worked on her god given talent rather then the package it was wrapped in, giving us all an amazing gift. Susan is not alone when it comes to women who have extraordinary talent and are extraordinary human beings without looking like models on magazine covers.

Susan could get a tummy tuck, boob job, face lift, nose bob, and bleach her hair blond!
But then she would look like a total fake (and be a total fake looker) who could sing great.

People luv her because she is real, a little plump, and the sort of lady who could sit between your mom and your aunt and fit right in. We relate.

Susan is not ugly, she is average.

She does not have to look beautiful because she IS beautiful. Real beauty comes from within.
Susan reminded us where to look for value in each other.
And she is a dream we share.

I recall a great line about the widespread use of plastic surgery which gave women the 'look of a Beverly Hills real estate agent'. I love it.

When Barbra Streisand first started out she was considered an 'ugly duckling' yet she made her looks acceptable as being beautiful. When she was on the big screen you didn't notice anyone else. Carol Burnett was not a conventional beauty but we loved her just the way she looked. Susan Boyle once again gives us the opportunity to appreciate someone just the way they are and it's an important lesson for us.

Susan Boyle's sudden fame comes at a time when plastic surgery, weight loss and how one wears clothes to fit a certain ideal or standard is the most important thing about a woman. Not a moment too soon.

Ugly as "home-made sin", as my father-in-law would say.

I love how grounded you are Susan Boyle! btw there is no ugly person because beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Give me Susan Boyle over Carmen Electra anyday. Substance over matter!
