I Like ItI Don’t Like It

You know Susan Boyle? The lady who sang awesomely on "Britain's Got Talent" and has earned millions upon millions of YouTube hits as a result? Well turns out she's not actually popular with most people. She just has one avid fan who has watched the video that many times, and turns out it's Bob Odenkirk.

Ok, so where can I buy the single, already, or the full CD? It is a talent show, and she was a "no-body" , she will have an album out and it will sell - after that, who knows - but someone who has devoted their life to volunteerism and looking after one's mother shouldn't be begrudged one beautiful moment of sunshine.

"Susan Boyle, the Singer" is an artificial story engineered by "Britain's Got Talent, Incorporated"....and all you "She's the Best Singer Ever!!" musical dolts fell for it.

1. How could she have gotten on the show without the producers saying "watch this one....she is so unattractive but that will make people go crazy when she sings like she's pretty or something".... and all of you who believed Simon was totally surprised need to buy some of my swamp land in FLA.

2. She's an average singer. She's not a great singer. Her looks made you think she's a great singer because you are expecting so little.

3. It's about 8 minutes and 35 seconds into her 15 minutes of fame.

4. This has to be the biggest case of "Emperor's Got No Clothes" of the year. Thanks to Twitter, YouTube, and phony "Reality TV."

BillyT: You did of course notice that this story was posted on the Comedy page; that it is a parody of us dolts who love the voice and couldn't possibly give a twink about Simon Cowell or any of his manipulations? You do of course know that you are not God and therefore cannot possibly know what is going on inside the hearts and souls of so many? You do know that the world is starved for inspiration and that fulfilling that need is an extraordinary act?

What feeds the heart and soul is often lost on the mind. The mind understands ego and cynicism and all manner of things that make life both good and insufferable. But the cannot understand the Susan Boyle phenomenon. It's this mind's own folly that it seeks to try.

I'll take Susan's ordinary voice over your ordinary cynicism any day.

"She's an average singer"

Well, she is no Sarah Brighton, but, in my life's experience, she is FAR from "average".

And for those who do not find her inspiring, perhaps one has to be beat up by life for ten or forty years to get why people are cheering for her.

Why is it so easy for a Brit like Hugh Laurie to convincingly sound like an American, but every Yank doing a Brit sounds like a contestant for "Upper Class Twit of the Year"?

Because they are both doing the version of each particular accent we in American prefer to hear. Standard Midwestern for Laurie -- flattened vowels and hard consonants. Received pronunciation, i.e., Upper Class and clearly understandable for Americans playing Brits. You know, the one regional dialect England has without the words being all slurred together with painful glottal stops and dropped consonants.

The accent of the top 0.1% is hardly regional. It's an obnoxious stereotype of England, and ignorant to give the working class that kind of accent.

I've always wondered: Why is it called the "received pronunciation?" Who is it "received" from?

Stop trying to throw the baby out with the bath water. Let this lady sing and become what she want to be. The many different voices and sounds of music is what makes music live forever. Stop trying to brand a dislike for the lady. She is perfect in whatever way she feels comfortable in presenting herself.

Trashing Susan is easy for the media flunkies because they are the types that despise women like her...it plays into their blatant misogyny to discount a women who isn't some tart bouncing her boobies and shaking her booty.

Not popular? Maybe MSM won't let her be. Preconceptions by those who profess to know better about what the public's tastes are than they actually are can be more than annoying. Remember the "non glamorous" Kate Smith? "Mama" Cass Eliot"? These were VERY popular women because of their voices and personality. How dare you not call them beautiful! How many operatic sopranos in addition would it take to convince them of their error?

Some guy on BBC who was an opera impresario at Covent Garden did note that her voice is not as good as many an opera diva...but then again, she is NOT an opera singer, but a pop standards singer, a genre that is never suited to an operatic voice; Pavarotti was one of the few who could cross over without having a hooty voice.

It was at one time that one could judge a singer by their ability.

Oh please bring back Australia's Dame Edna. At least, she/he does a sophisticated satire.

This man appears likely to have autism-a fairly high functioning level of the condition.

Hey - it's a Funny or Die video and if you think it's not funny, so be it - but it's satire - hence Bob Odenkirk - so people need to take it that way. Susan Boyle deserves all the accolades she gets with her great voice and if a bit of fun is had in the process that doesn't hurt her, then let it be. She'll win the competition like she should.
