How Michelle Obama Remains In Full Control Of Building Her Image

New York Times:

Vogue magazine, the fashion world's chronicler of first ladies, bedecked Hillary Rodham Clinton in black velvet and Laura Bush in blue silk. But not Michelle Obama. She insisted on choosing her own dress (a sleeveless, magenta silk number) and using her own hair and makeup stylists for the glossy photograph splashed across Vogue's March cover.

This was nothing new for Mrs. Obama, who has pointedly controlled her look on the covers of People, Essence, More and O, Oprah Winfrey's magazine.

I think it's very smart of her and her team to allow her to present one domestic side of herself to the public, while behind the scenes she's involved in far more than is publicized. I'm sure she's also the Prez' chief advisor. She's an educated, bright woman and she's his wife...isn't that the role every wife plays?

The "big but" is that just about every one of our recent presidents has said that he looked to his wife for counsel. By now, you should fully expect that you're getting a package deal of some sort. Anyway, we never get to pick the president's advisors, so why get worked up about the concept of the First Lady's being one of them.

One of the many reasons I admire our FLOTUS is that she is comfortable in her own skin and will not let anyone define her. She is a strong and confident woman, hence a great role model for our daughters.

I don't get this constant refrain about how brilliant she is. I've heard her speak on many occasions and she isn't particularly articulate and tends to speak like an ordinary housewife. "Ya know. Let me tell ya" is how she usually begins a conversation. For a Princeton graduate, lawyer and a professional in a medical center VP position, she doesn't impress. Her fans, however, gush over every thing she does just like Laura Bushes fans.

Funny, there goes all those trolls who proclaimed repeatedly that MO was wearing clothes the mags provided and not her own clothes.
