nytimes.com:

Eight months before its scheduled release on Dec. 18, Mr. Cameron's "Avatar," a science-fiction thriller filmed with his own specially devised 3-D technology, is stirring up a kind of anticipation that until now had been reserved for, say, the Rapture.

That might foretell a hit on the order of Mr. Cameron's "Titanic," with $1.8 billion in worldwide ticket sales.

Or it might just be a giant headache for 20th Century Fox...

Yes... I fully anticipate a massive flop!!! Why would anyone expect Cameron to put out anything but a crappy flick?

I heard it's actually just an avatar for some sci-fi forum that he joined. He's spending the huge amount of money because he wants the best 125x125 pixel animated gif ever. It's going to be part lol cat, part Star Wars spoof, and I think it's all synced to Susan Boyle's Idol performance.

The bootleg will be on the streets in time for holiday gift giving.

Let's not forget "TRUE LIES".

The first 15 minutes of that film was the BEST James Bond never made.

But "THE ABYSS" will always be my favorite Cameron film.

Dude is definitely the "Terrance Malick" of high-tech filmmaking.

Cameron is my favorite modern day director. His films are always interesting and have great special effects!

"ALIENS" is still the best sequel every made!

I have NO idea what "AVATAR" is about but I'm gonna check it out cause you know he's the "king of the world" LOL

I totally agree, except that the special effects usually come second to the story itself; his movies are great entertainment but layered and meaningful, a fact often lost on people. I love it how people loved to hate him and now love to love him. First movie in 12 years, it should be a good show.

He has a deft touch with movie-making, (though I can't watch Titanic due to schmaltz), so I await this one with anticipation. And no, I wouldn't watch a bootleg copy of something that is going to rely (I suspect) on the clarity of the effects to work properly.

Just how long has this been in the making?

Almost 3 years I think. The live actors were filmed last year but I believe they had to develop new technology for the 3D.

He did the same thing with THE ABYSS. He and his brother developed a special under water camera for filming

Impressive. I hope it'll be good.

I don't know, he sort of reminds me of "Lost Saucer" by Sid & Marty Krofft with Ruth Buzzi and Jim Nabors... I mean, where's "The Dorse"?

The movie sounds intriguing. I'll watch it, I've liked most of his other films.

This is one film Im truly looking forward to seeing. It will certainly be interesting if Cameron can combine THE ABYSS & TITANIC & a hint ALIENS into one film. There arent too many intelligent event films on the horizon, so here's hoping it lives up to the hype.

Both salubrious and lugubrious concurrently.

A combination of the WRONG parts of Abyss and Titanic would make for some truely awful moviemaking. The muddled ending of Abyss was ghastly. And I've never been able to sit through all of Titanic, it just makes my skin crawl. The sheer absurdity of Billy Zane trying to shoot Leonardo while the Titanic was in the process of sinking! With such over-the-top melodrama Cameron would've done better to cast Snidley Whiplash in the part.
