COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- An end-of-year college block party spiraled out of control as police fired pellets and used pepper spray to break up hundreds of rioting students who sparked a string of street fires at Kent State University.

Video posted on the Internet shows students hurling furniture and street signs into the flames on Saturday night as a SWAT team in riot gear converged on the crowd. Kent police said the party grew violent after one reveler was arrested and students began pelting officers with bottles, bricks and rocks.

It was the first violent clash between Kent State students and police in years. In 1970, four Kent State students were killed by Ohio National Guard troops during a campus protest of the invasion of Cambodia.

"They were burning pretty much everything," said police dispatcher Rosemarie Mosher. "They were throwing stop signs on the fires, they were throwing chairs, couches, tree branches. Basically anything they could get their hands on."

At least 64 students were arrested, and several officers suffered minor injuries, Mosher said. Students gathered on front porches at about 8:30 p.m. and began spilling into the streets on the unusually warm evening.

When officers ordered the crowd to disperse, students built piles of couches, suitcases and other debris and lit them on fire. There were at least four fires blazing in the middle of the street, Mosher said.

The students led the police down the road starting fires, said Ben Wolford, an editor at the campus newspaper who witnessed the riot.

"They were going into their houses and bringing out office chairs," he said. "Someone said they threw a flat-screen TV on the fire."

Students who lived in nearby houses threw objects from windows to feed the flames. Video shows students huddled on a roof, escaping into a second-story window as a line of about 25 police, their faces masked by plastic shields, forms near the flames.

Choruses of boos were captured on video as firefighters doused the fires, and students cheered as others quickly ran back into the street to spark more.

Officers tried to chase students away from the street and shot them with paint balls and pepper spray, Wolford said. Many students ignored orders to leave, hiding behind houses and peeking out to see what was happening, he said.

"When police first started making their little charge down College Avenue, they yelled, 'Get in your houses or we'll arrest you,'" Wolford said. "When one student stayed on his lawn, two officers sprinted at him and just kind of grabbed him forcefully and arrested him."

On Sunday morning, splotches of paint stained nearby houses, and shards of glass littered the grass and pavement.

"The cops were being nice, and two minutes later we were shot by rubber bullets for no reason," junior Jamie Farrell told the university's student newspaper.

The riot was mostly over by 10 p.m., when more than two dozen police and fire vehicles surrounded the area.

Kent State spokesman Tom Neumann said the students' behavior is inexcusable and the university is awaiting more information from police.

"Obviously, things got a little bit out of hand," Neumann said. The university has not received any reports of injured students, he said.

Wolford said most students believe the violence probably could have been avoided.

"I think if they just blocked off the street, let kids have that road to party on for that night, it would've just been a party and people would've gone home," he said.

GET A LIFE! Over a riot, we are bad? No. YOU are the ones who are looking REALLY SMALL by judging us on what we do. It's normal and quite familiar to be a college student and to party when school is almost over. Oh and don't forget, to the older folks who like to sit back and judge us for this, I'm pretty sure most of you grew up in the sixties. Don't sit there and judge us when your generation was just as bad. GO KENT STATE! I LOVE MY SCHOOL!!

You know, you people are too judgemental about us students here at Kent. If the police and all the other "city officials" would've minded their own business, then none of this would've broken like it did. We know how to party and we know how to get crazy, yes, BUT when you get police and "city officials" involved, we DO NOT like it at all and we will retort back. The road was blocked off for certain reasons. Why would you drive through in your cruiser if the road is blocked off. None of us were driving. Therefore, no reason for the cops to even be in the area. It would've been like a normal party up here like there always is. I don't see cops strolling through in their cruisers at other block parties. Why stroll down college street? To pick on us students who are having fun. You know, to everyone who has commented on here about saying that we are an unfortunate and uncaring group of students,

The kind of folks who live and party on college street, plus the kent police = a good show. Not a riot, just another example of how ridiculous some of the kids in kent are, and how ridiculous the police force in the area is.

Halloween is hardly fun in kent anymore, the one year i participated i counted 38 police lined up on main street, ready to go and the slightest encouragement.

I think its also worth noting, the same people who were involved in that "riot", are the same people who jeer and boo from the side of the road at the annual may 4th peace march.

Police like the military have been trained to confront, hurt, arrest and even kill citizen should said citizens
take too the streets. Anti war or labor even gay marriage rally or as in Oakland Ca. when tax paying citizens come out to protest murder on the Metro by security officer.
Fear, Fear, Fear the mantra of the day.

This is absolutely the case, if the police had handled the situation differently, nothing would have happened.

The fact is, kent police are what you could call dicks, and i think its safe to say that this was a release of tension on both sides, both going too far. From my experience, police in general, and certainly in kent, respond as though they need to crush their opponent. If a kid has pot in his car, 4+ cop cars need to check it out, i helped block a bridge last may 4th in protest of the war, and they sent SWAT in.

At what point are we responsible for ourselves?

Well I suppose I'll give my input seeing as I'm a Kent State student. Long made short our largely impotent but no less annoying campus police showed up at the party and started arresting people who were standing on their front porches. When one girl was arrested for...standing... her friend walked up to the cops and asked what was going on and they proceeded to push her down onto the road and told to leave or she'd be arrested. Thats when the students who were very drunk and already angry started hurling beer bottles and rocks at the cops. They succeeded in chasing the campus rent-a-cops off and they soon returned with the freaking SWAT team. Fun times at Kent State.

You call that a Riot? I lived in L.A. during the Rodney King Riot.
At least the First day of the L.A. riot was a true civil rebellion.
You had red, yellow, black & white (and several other races) Attacking Parker Center.
Together with a united feeling of action.
Something we may never see agian.
Riot?
This might not even be classified as a Party. Where is the Bounce House?

"Riots, We don't need no stinkin' Riots..."!

Sounds like some street party bonfires and over reacting Campus Cops that created this Campus Confrontation... Telling students to get in their houses does not "fly" when the students are smart enough to realize that they also have rights and don't have to vacate private property (their lawns) just because the Campus Cops tell them too!

Kent State should set aside a "party" plot and allow students to use it instead of "picking fights" with the students in front of their houses... BTW: It's America, if folks want to burn their chairs let them, if they don't own the chairs then charge them for it; I'm sure Kent State has lots of video cameras in that area (or soon will)!

I think an important part of the story was glossed over. What happened between spilling out in the streets at 8:30 p.m. and oficers ordering the crowd to disperse? What really was at issue here? The students didn't start any fires until they were in conflict with the police.

No Campus Cops = No "Riots"...

or maybe better said:

No Exaggerated "PRESS" coverage = just another student body school newspaper story...

OK so it is the cops fault that a bunch of college kids set fires? They didnt say there was a conflict. They were probally loud, and someone called in,saying they were disturbing the peace. Cops told them to shut it down, (this happens at most parties), and the students set up fires. Thank goodness none of them fell into those fires.

As i understand it, they were up to their usual game of picking off the drunks and the underage in the street, and like the story said some girl fell or was knocked over, then bottles were thrown... Before you know it cops from every surrounding city and township plus akron swat are there, fires get lit, and they are throwing tear gas, paint ball guns with teargas in them, rubber bullets...

Both sides are to blame, but i think the cops could have handled it better, but chose not to.

All i can say is i wish i'd wandered over there to spectate and shoot some photos...

Doesn't sound like it was a riot until the police became involved. It's funny that some of these people think its okay for the police to break up a peacefully assembled crowd and then become violent when free Americans understandably refuse. I'll bet you are the same people that answer unavailable phone calls.

OH, I was worried that people might not support cops! What would we do without cops?! We need more cops. Everyone should be a cop because cops know better than everyone. I hope these kids get what they deserve. If they don't, I'll be really disappointed.

I agree, i think i'd feel safer if the police sat on every corner and knocked on my door everytime i had some friends over for a campfire and some beers. Without the police how would i know what i can and cant do, or right from wrong?
