I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Five members of Congress and two Darfur activists had themselves arrested Monday outside the Sudanese embassy in Washington, D.C., to draw attention to the continuing humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Uniformed Secret Service officers put plastic handcuffs on Reps. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), John Lewis (D-Ga.), Donna Edwards (D-Md.), Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), and Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.), along with Save Darfur Coalition president Jerry Fowler and Enough Project co-founder John Prendergast after the group stepped behind yellow police tape in front of the embassy.

Before being taken into custody, each of the arrestees addressed a small crowd of reporters and other activists who had been tipped off about the event. Each speaker called on the Obama administration to do more to stop the conflict in Sudan.

"Almost a half a million people have been killed," said Rep. Lewis before crossing the line. "This terror, this violence must end and it must end soon."

After their statements, the gang lifted up the police tape and waited patiently (and quietly) for the police to arrest them. An officer issued three warnings before the cuffs came out. Officers frisked each of the lawbreakers and went through their pockets before stuffing them in a paddywagon and a cruiser.

The group met Monday morning at the Religious Action Center before marching the short distance to the embassy. As they went over their plan, some of the members put their wallets and other personal belongings into plastic bags. Ellison took the extra step of removing his shoelaces. The Huffington Post asked Ellison if he'd been arrested before.

"Not on something like this," he said.

The protesters had hired criminal defense attorney Laura Rhodes to get them out from behind bars. Rhodes seemed pretty confident in her game.

"For those of you anxious about going to jail, I've gotten people out who've killed people," she said.

UPDATE:
Also arrested: Rabbi David Saperstein, director of the Religious Action Center of
Reform Judaism.

What you think there is freedom of the press in Darfur

No, the food is icky there. Plus they might actually have to stay in jail. Can't risk that. A staged event is no match for the real thing. They would never attempt the real thing.

Congressman John Lewis is such an amazing person and so are the other protestors who were arrested for protesting UNJUST laws. Sudan like so many war torn countries need help, yesterday. It isn't breaking the law when the law is unjust...

If there was such a thing as a tor-ture law, and Bush thought that law was injust, then he wouldn't be breaking the law if he ordered tor-ture....Is that your argument Quasi??

Sooner or later the people of a country must pull themselves out of the quag-mire. Pouring more money I'm afraid will not help..And one other thing..where the heck is the UN in all this? Thought they fixed problems llike this...they are simply useless unless they're partying in NY.

Now you hit the nail on the head - the United Nations has been using New York City as a resort; they don't pay their bills, abuse our laws and send criminals here to avoid prosecution in their own country. What are they doing to earn a living; all they do is talk for the most part. I say kick them out and send them to a country like Darfur and then maybe they will get some real work done.

Yes I'm sure you'd say that if people were killing you. It's funny bc this attitude helps fuel terrorism.

President Obama... will you say something now?

We know you are working on it (among the other millions of problems)... but... SAVE DARFUR NOW, please.

Why don't we relocate all the people of Darfur to the US..?.Each state take their share based on who they voted for on Nov 4. We give them food, housing, and when they're on their feet we send them back, armed, so this does not happen again..sound like a plan??

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:30 PM on 04/27/2009

Are you suggesting that a higher percentage should go to states who voted for Obama? I'd ask what the logic was behind that statement, but I sure wouldn't want to offend you by suggesting that race has something to do with it.

I'll see your suggestion, and go one better - why don't we relocate all the people of Israel to the US? Each state can take their share based on the average number of chromosomes of their citizenry - so in your case, you would get more due to your extra pair of chromosomes.

Courage. Here's real courage. Thank you five Democrats and others who sacrificed their own liberty and valuable time to save lives in a country desolated by savagery. Now, let's not only applaud their efforts but add our voices to theirs. I also would like to know if we can identify any arms manufacturers who are allowing their weapons to be sold to dealers which then sell them to people in Darfur, Sudan, Somalia, and other countries where people are slaughtering one another.

John Lewis.

That man ijust keeps on keeping on!

I'm proud of the protesters, proud the police were cool.

That guy in Sudan belongs in shackles in The Hague.

Not the only ex-president who belongs there, either.

Shame on them!

Why are they not supporting our very own people, who are incarcerated against their will, in super expensive nursing homes, when they have done nothing wrong, and their only "crime" id to be disabled??
