I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Five members of Congress and two Darfur activists had themselves arrested Monday outside the Sudanese embassy in Washington, D.C., to draw attention to the continuing humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Uniformed Secret Service officers put plastic handcuffs on Reps. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), John Lewis (D-Ga.), Donna Edwards (D-Md.), Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), and Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.), along with Save Darfur Coalition president Jerry Fowler and Enough Project co-founder John Prendergast after the group stepped behind yellow police tape in front of the embassy.

Before being taken into custody, each of the arrestees addressed a small crowd of reporters and other activists who had been tipped off about the event. Each speaker called on the Obama administration to do more to stop the conflict in Sudan.

"Almost a half a million people have been killed," said Rep. Lewis before crossing the line. "This terror, this violence must end and it must end soon."

After their statements, the gang lifted up the police tape and waited patiently (and quietly) for the police to arrest them. An officer issued three warnings before the cuffs came out. Officers frisked each of the lawbreakers and went through their pockets before stuffing them in a paddywagon and a cruiser.

The group met Monday morning at the Religious Action Center before marching the short distance to the embassy. As they went over their plan, some of the members put their wallets and other personal belongings into plastic bags. Ellison took the extra step of removing his shoelaces. The Huffington Post asked Ellison if he'd been arrested before.

"Not on something like this," he said.

The protesters had hired criminal defense attorney Laura Rhodes to get them out from behind bars. Rhodes seemed pretty confident in her game.

"For those of you anxious about going to jail, I've gotten people out who've killed people," she said.

UPDATE:
Also arrested: Rabbi David Saperstein, director of the Religious Action Center of
Reform Judaism.

I applaud the cause and am proud of those who put themselves on the line, but do we need another crisis right now?

Hardly a crisis. Think of it as a reminder that even during crises life goes on.

What does that mean? "hardly a crisis"?

To those who live in Darfur, it is THE crisis.

Huh? How is their protest a "crisis"? Besides, for the people of Darfur, the crisis is *NOW*!

Oh, but your puppies and nice green grass means all's right in the world, can't be any starvation, rape, and killing.

Crises don't cease to exist because we ignore them.

No one needs a crisis but if we ignore it that just won't make it go away. The more problems there are to address, the easier it is to find something helpful to do.

My sister told me back in August that she needed to watch the GOP convention because she really wanted to know - seriously - what "they" get excited about. When they started chanting "Drill baby drill" we knew.

I don't have time to follow news twenty-four hours a day. So if anyone can show me this kind of committment by Republicans to a humanitariian cause that I missed somehow, please tell me. I would really love to change my impressions.

Congressional reps who are actually doing something for ordinary, non-rich human beings.

Astonishing!

If I was going to go get myself arrested, I would want a lawyer who was just that good.

And lawyers have a legal, ethical, and professional obligation to zealously represent their clients without regard for guilt or innocence. You may not like it, but it is one of the cornerstones of our justice system.

I wonder why everyone was so upset when Johnny Cochran zealously defended O.J, He was doing his job.

I dont know about their lawyer. "I've gotten people out who kill people" is not a good sound bite if the folks she's defending are members of congress trying to stop killers.

Look for Sean Hannity to focus on the fact that Keith Ellison is a Muslim and make this into something entirely ridiculous.

Wait... Sean Hannity and entirely ridiculous. I apologize for the redundancy.

China is the problem. They are exporting oil and providing weapons to the government. They need to protest outside China's embassy but that of course isn't going to happen given how much we rely on them now.

countfloyd - China is exporting oil that the US and Europeans want.

There are oil resources and untapped water aquifers that other countries have their eyes on.

I feel for the people that are suffering, but the American people are not getting the complete unbias story on Sudan.

""For those of you anxious about going to jail, I've gotten people out who've killed people," she said."

An irrelevant and unnecessary tidbit. Way to give more fuel to those who want to emphasize the stereotype of Dems/libs being soft on crime.

I wonder if they have now made a DHS watchlist.

Isn't that what happens when you publicly express an opinion, especially when it is one that goes against the current actions of the Obama administration?

Well maybe you should ask Bush who was the one that started the DHS watchlist. And there was one about liberal extremists as well. Also, if you dont think militant right wing extremism is a problem, you havent been watching the news very closely at all

Umm... the Bush Administration asked DHS to provide him a list of left-wing groups as well. Such things are necessary, whether of the right or left.

I'm a democrat and I don't even care that Bush did that. There are harmful people on both sides.

I think you intended to put that statement in the past tense and substitute Bush for Obama. Then we could all agree with you. Why is it that Repubs always accuse others of doing EXACTLY what they are doing? Is it some kind of attempt at misdirection? If so, let me be the millionth to say: "It's not working anymore!"

Here, here, for these members of congress. The very real and tragic issues in Darfur have been pushed to the "back burner." so far by other current events that they risk being pushed off the stove top. That can only cause a mess that will be much harder and time consuming to clean up while something of real value will be lost. I commend these legislators for pulling it back to the front. Those better feelings, however, were tempered by the words of the lawyer: "For those anxious about going to jail, I've gotten people out who have killed people." Somehow, I don't find much comfort in that boast. I'm wondering; how many times, and where are these killers now?

No, no, it was free advertising aimed at all those who will need a really good defense attorney soon.

I don't think the attorney is claiming that she broke these people out of jail.

Presumably, these people were found not guilty or the charges were dismissed for valid reasons.
