WASHINGTON — The 21 women nervously mingling at the White House were among the best in their fields.

They had achieved Olympic gold, Grammy awards and four stars in the Army. One had orbited the earth aboard space shuttle Endeavour. Some had reached the highest outposts of corporate America, or had earned kudos on stage or on the big screen.

They were together for one reason: Michelle Obama.

As a candidate's wife, as it became increasingly clear Barack Obama might win the presidency, she had dreamed about a day like this, when she could bring together such a talented group and send them off to give pep talks to kids in the public schools.

As first lady, she realized she could make it happen.

"I couldn't have imagined this a year ago," Mrs. Obama said. She was speaking one morning last month to the other high achievers she had invited to the blue-and-yellow Diplomatic Reception Room in the basement of the White House.

Something else seemed unimaginable a year ago, too.

Who would ever have thought that Michelle Obama would be transformed from a potential campaign liability into America's newest sweetheart and No. 1 cover girl, every bit as popular as her husband.

___

Michelle Obama's first 100 days in the White House really began more than 365 days ago in Wisconsin.

Rallying an audience in Milwaukee, she said: "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country." She explained that she was proud of the people who'd gotten involved in politics, but that's not what her critics heard.

They said the comment proved she hated America. They portrayed her as the stereotypical angry black woman. Fox News Channel talked of the "terrorist fist jab" she and her husband shared the night he clinched the Democratic presidential nomination. The New Yorker, making fun of the people making fun of her, sketched Mrs. Obama on its cover in an afro and militant garb.

It was a dark time in the many months she had spent campaigning. Yet it was a teachable moment, too.

Mrs. Obama learned from her mistake.

And in the months since, she has gone from lightning rod to rock star, from the cover of The New Yorker to the cover of Vogue, from just plain fashionable to worldwide fashion icon.

She is popular as the president, maybe more. Depending on the poll, she has approval ratings in the 60s and 70s. Practically the only issue being debated these days, silly as it seems, is whether she goes sleeveless too much and for the wrong occasions.

It's not unusual for a first lady to be more popular than the president, but that usually happens further along. That it has happened so quickly for Mrs. Obama says a lot about how perceptions of her have changed.

"If you had told me a year ago that she would attain this kind of popularity I would have said, 'No way,'" said Myra Gutin, a professor at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J., who studies first ladies. "She's really reversed things in a way that no one would ever have expected."

___

Maybe it's the three F's: family, food and fashion. And a queen.

Americans mostly see their first ladies as wives and mothers, so how could anyone object whenever Mrs. Obama said she wanted to be "mom in chief" to her 10- and 7-year-old daughters, Malia and Sasha?

She worried openly about moving them to the White House. Getting them settled was her top priority.

The public now sees she meant what she said.

The girls got an elaborate swing set, right outside dad's Oval Office window. A new garden on the South Lawn will supply them with fresh fruit and vegetables. The promised puppy, a Portuguese water dog named Bo, recently arrived. Mrs. Obama returned early from her husband's first European trip to be home when the girls started a new school week.

In the eyes of many people, the image of an angry woman was transformed into one of a happy, doting mother.

Once in the White House, Mrs. Obama quickly was out the door and running on a bunch of issues, all of them very traditional, first ladylike and unlikely to upset the public.

She dashed around from one government agency to another, thanking often-criticized civil service employees for their work and plugging the president's $787 billion economic stimulus package.

She got beyond official Washington, too _ touring a neighborhood social services center, reading to little kids, serving mushroom risotto at a soup kitchen. She gave pep talks to high school students and dirtied her hands in the garden.

In Europe, she caused a media frenzy, not as much for where she went or with whom she met or for what she said, but for the outfits she wore to meet the British prime minister, the queen of England and the French president and his wife, a former fashion model.

Some of the clothes she wears sell out immediately after aides say where she got them. Numerous Web sites dissect and analyze her style; at least one is posting photos of every outfit she wears in public.

In London, she alone drew a rare, and much talked about, public display of affection from Queen Elizabeth II.

At a reception for world leaders attending the G-20 economic summit, Her Majesty draped an arm across the first lady's back. Mrs. Obama returned the gesture, sparking endless discussion about whether it was wrong of her to touch the queen.

But the embrace also was a symbol of just how far Michelle Obama's transformation had taken her. By getting a touch from the queen, she pulled off something few others have.

___

Mrs. Obama organized her own kind of G-20 summit at the White House last month, with an all-female cast ranging from singer Alicia Keys to actress Fran Drescher to astronaut Mae Jemison.

The assignment was to go out and inspire young people. Girls, especially.

Getting them to see their potential wasn't something Mrs. Obama talked about on the campaign trail. The pep talks came after she realized the role model and source of inspiration she had become for so many.

"Nothing in my life's path would have predicted that I'd be standing here as the first African-American first lady of the United States of America," she told an audience of schoolgirls in London. "If you want to know the reason why I'm standing here, it's because of education."

It's a simple pitch, and it's the same whether she is talking to students in D.C. or England.

She was in their shoes once, but she liked going to school, she liked being smart, she liked getting A's. She worked hard to get ahead and to prove the people who doubted her wrong. She tells students they can do the same.

Laura Bush says she wished she'd realized earlier the power she had as first lady.

Michelle Obama's journey has already gotten her to that point, and she sees what she can accomplish.

It's got nothing to do with black or white--or angry black woman or any of that nonsense. I adore Michelle Obama because she's my kind of people. She wasn't born rich, she's not a political legacy or an heiress or a smooth operator. She's a wife, mother, and career woman like me and solidly in the middle class. Up until the book deal, the Obamas were closer to my tax bracket than any other president in the last 30 years, even without adjusting for inflation.

I adore Michelle Obama because I get her--she cares about her kids, worries about her family, knows she got where she is because she worked her butt off and knew the value of her education. She sweated over child care and career versus mom.

am surprised that so much focus is spent on the 'black woman' meme that commentators are forgetting the 'woman' part of this article. in the psyche of the american public, the first lady has a clearly defined role and any deviation from the script will be spun adversely. why should the first lady stop at tending gardens or dressing fashionably. michelle has much to offer than merely being an role model, not to belittle that inspirational role. the sad part is that michelle playing an active role in the administration will greatly help obama but will most likely become a political liability. the savvy administration is keeping her limited to the more palatable, less controversial, traditional role.

She is a sweetie pie and always has been. Trust the right wing to think up something as corny as that!

I agree with many of the commenters here in that First Lady Obama did not change one bit, nor did she need to. She was perfectly fine as she was and is. Fortunately, some of those who were too closed-minded and judgmental to see her for the person that she is finally came around and our country is the better for it.

Some of the commenters below asked why the issue of Black vs. white always has to enter the discussion. I think that, whether we want to admit it or not, to some degree, we have prejudgments or ideas or stereotypes that we unconsciously (although some do it rather consciously and without shame) assign to others based on their more obvious traits (skin color, gender, age). Even today, people still literally expect certain attitudes and behaviors based on nothing more than a person's color/ethnicity, and I believe that many Americans tried to do the same with Mrs. Obama. It happens every day, but you're unaware of it unless it is happening to YOU.

I'm just glad First Lady Obama remains true to herself and lets absolutely no one else define who she is.

Another seemingly good yet flawed psoting...I agree that she has a better image now then before...but what I don't agree with is that she made a mistake. Anyone with half a brain would know what she was talking about and where she ws coming from...it was the GOP and thier campaign tricks that turned what she said around and on its ear, making it un recognizable to furthur thier "she's an angry black woman meme"
The reason she is so popular now is because she has stayed true to form. She is the same woman today that she was during the campaign she just doesn't have the right wing msm enablers filtering her image into what they want to project.

The First Lady hasn't change at all! I've watched her speak many times during the campaign and in Iowa she blew away the ladies that came to see her speak. The room was packed! However, Michelle has not changed, America changed, when they started focusing on her and realized how normal and natural she is. Yes, she is strong, but soft and warm.

Had the opportunity to meet her when she was over in the UK (Maggie's Cancer centre). You could feel the love from the crowd gathered to see her. It was amazing.
Keep shinning MO.

As I read this article, I had to somewhat disagree with the writer, it's not that Michelle Obama changed her image. Rather, that america finally got to know Michelle and saw through the lies of the GOP attack puppies. She is now as she was during the campaign, we were just bombarded with cut throat GOP attack ads that had nothing to do with making america better. Look how Bush cut up McCain during the 2004. That being said, if the GOP would try to destroy one of its own.....well.....We love her simply because she stays true to herself, and not flip flop depending on the occasion or need.

she has 3 PR people focussed on making her appealling to the masses. if you dont think that is what has been going on then you must be one of those people who read supermarket tabloids and think they are true.

and where have you obtained this information that she has 3 PR people? and even if she did given that michelle is still in control means nada if anything that are there to insure that those on the outside are not twisting who they are.... but such as it is. By your same logic i guess you believe the right wing attack talking points about her...funny they have nothing to say about her now....

I disagree sbrown80, this is not a white black thing. I am a black woman and intially I was not a fan. Like anyone new on the political scene it takes time to get to know them. Let's stop making this about race!

I agree. I'm white and was a strong Edwards supporter but I ended up contributing and working for Obama and voted for him proudly. I just think of the Obama's as black or white I just see them as Americans.

I definitely think Michelle's is taking her new role and will forever change the position of first lady for all time to come. I personally think some of her clothing are disasters but that's ok because that's who she is and I wish she'd leave off the false eyelashes. Otherwise she perfect in my eyes.

I don't understand why everything has to be a white/blk thing with some people. You know there were peep who didn't like MO at first didn't have anything to do with color but the little the media said about her. After peopel got to see and see her without the media telling us who she was, she became a hit. POTUS said people will love and respect MO wasn't they got to know her and like always he was right. Can't we just love that MO is love by most people? I love MO and I don't care what color she is because she's cool, strong, smart, a hugger and her kids and husband are crazy about her.

Puleeze...get a passport and then get a life...try travel. REPUBLICANS had a problem with Michelle Obama. Your sweeping statement about whites, IF TRUE, would have McCain in the WH, at this point. Thankfully it is not! Last time I looked, Michael Steele was both black and a Republican....Alan Keyes, etc...

I am really tired of these types of generalized comments. I am a 63 year old white woman born and raised in Mississippi. I lived in Chicago when he ran for the State Senate, in 2002 I was at Federal Plaza when he gave his speech against the Iraq War, I voted for him for US Senate and for President.

When he decided to run for President Blacks certainly did not rush to support him. Instead Black leaders and Black voters were putting their support behind Hillary Clinton. It wasn't until he won in the state that is 96% white, Iowa, that Blacks realized they just may be on the wrong side of history.

So true. In all honesty, blacks did not begin to rally in supoprt of Candidate Obama until it boiled down to him and Candicate McCain. I tussled between him and Candidate Clinton. When Clinton began to down play the significance of his 2004 Democratic Convention speech, began to distort his voting record, minimize the significance of the many YEARS he spent in the Illinois Senate as an elected official, and did not take his goals for America seriously, she lost me as a supporter.

sbrown80 fortunately you are 100% wrong thank goodness. I'm white and love her and though I don't like some of her clothing choices and wish she wouldn't wear false eyelashes, I think she's perfect and a definite role model for my granddaughter and all your girls. I've not been proud of one of our other first ladies and most of my white friends and my black friends feel the same way. SO THERE.

By the way, what do you have against white people?

Well, I am glad that Michelle has finally been accepted by most Americans. I can only imagine how difficult it has been for Michelle to come from the South Side of Chicago and thrusted onto the national and world stage in a relatively short period of time. I do think there was some level of uncomfortableness with Michelle and I do think that it was because of her black skin and people not knowing what to expect from her because no one had ever seen a black woman in the white house. Now that America has seen that Michelle is just like any other first lady- no big deal
