WASHINGTON — First lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday reflected on her own family's rise from slavery to the White House as she helped to unveil a statue of abolitionist Sojourner Truth _ the first black woman to be so honored at the Capitol.

"I hope that Sojourner Truth would be proud to see me, a descendant of slaves, serving as the first lady of the United States of America," Mrs. Obama said to loud applause at a ceremony at the Capitol Visitor Center.

An early crusader for women's rights to vote who also for an end to slavery, Truth met presidents Abraham Lincoln in 1864 and Ulysses S. Grant in 1870, and delivered her signature "Ain't I a Woman?" speech at a women's rights convention in Akron, Ohio, in 1851. She tried to vote on two occasions, but was turned away both times. She died in November 1883 at her home in Battle Creek, Mich.

Lawmakers, students and actress Cicely Tyson were among those who gathered at the visitor's center to celebrate Truth's legacy and watch Mrs. Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others unveil the bronze bust of Truth.

"We're here because of barriers she challenged and fought to tear down, and paths she helped to forge and trod alone," Clinton said to an audience made up mostly of women.

Artist Artis Lane created the bust, which was paid for with private money.

Truth's sculpture will remain on permanent display in the underground visitor center's main space, called Emancipation Hall in part because slaves helped build the Capitol.

"Now many young boys and girls, like my own daughters, will come to Emancipation Hall and see the face of a woman who looks like them," Mrs. Obama said.

Few minority women are enshrined in the Capitol. There are several statues of American Indian women, but no Asian or Hispanic women, according Donald Ritchie, a Senate historian.

Many of the statues in the Capitol's collection were given by the states in the 19th century, Ritchie said. Most of the collection's diversity has come in the last several decades.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Truth wouldn't remain for long the only black woman honored with a statue in the Capitol because a statue of civil rights icon Rosa Parks will soon be placed there.

In 2006, President George W. Bush signed into law a requirement that a bust of Truth be placed in a "suitable, permanent location in the Capitol." Clinton co-sponsored the measure when she served in the Senate.

The National Congress of Black Women, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of black women and their families, has pushed for Truth to be memorialized in the Capitol for almost 10 years.

Kim Fuller, a member of the organization from Philadelphia, said black women have not been represented at the Capitol for "far too long."

"But now we are," said Fuller, 49. "And who better to begin the representation _ this is not the end of the representation ... who better to begin than Sojourner Truth?"

....okay first lets us recognize its about Sojourner Truth and NOT about what Michelle is wearing. This gets so petty. Understand this....Michelle can wear whatever she chooses good or bad. Half of you judging probably look a hot mess...Focus on whats important in life...GOSH!

Michelle and Hillary look really good together with the stripe on her skirt picking up the color of Hillary's suit.

I just want to know who keeps putting MO in those wide skirts. Not the best choice for women with large hips.

Sojourner Truth is one of the most important American women in history, and it's wonderful to see her so honored.

To some of you fashion experts (who apparently don't actually know that much about fashion) Mrs. O was appropriately dressed for the time of day & occassion; dressed in the latest fashion; dressed to suit her age (not the dowager Bush women or the Queen); and she looked radiant and proud. Please stop giving the First Lady fashion advice (unless you include some pics of your "well-dressed" self), she doesn't need it!

The first lady does need some help in finding the clothes that suit her best. The strips overtook everything else and the cut is more suited for a young girl. The material, which looks like a straight cotton is looks bulky with the cut of that dress.
no on is slamming her, this is about fashion, not if we like the first lady or not. we all have tried on a zillion clothes, seen our friends in a zillion different outfits so in some respects, i think the critics haven't been too far off, while some people wont say one word that doesnt reflect 100% positive on anything around her.
i think most women have a fairly good idea of how other women look.

Does anyone else see some irony in the fact that MO's dress, besides being rather casual and not at all elegant for an unveiling of a monument commemorating a black woman slave in the Capital of the US, is also harkens back to the days when women were kept in the kitchen.
This is exactly why MO needs help. She was the only one on stage that looked out of place. She looked like she should have been in the kitchen. People wear different clothes for different events. All First Ladies had stylists who helped them get it right. That does not mean MO cannot make a statement with her clothes. It only means she will make a statement that is flattering to her and appropriate. Now am I her greatest fan or not for giving her such great advise......

Mrs. Obama:

I have no doubt that Sojourner Truth would be proud of you. All the people who fought for the end of slavery would be proud of you. (A lot of the rest of us are pretty proud of you too, even if we can't claim any credit. I hope you don't mind.)

They would know that their fight, their sacrifices, were not in vain. They would feel all was worthwhile.

It is a great gift to realize to whom we owe so much. May your wisdom continue to guide you.

What is the appropriate dress for an occasion? Haven't we all been acquiescing to rules established by someone else's taste? Who says a suit is the most appropriate outfit for a luncheon or an official event? Just because it has been done to death??? I remember as a career woman dressing at the fairly high end of the fashion bracket...there were days I felt I would die if I put on one one more suit...no matter how cute or expensive. I tired of the hose, the suit, the necklace/pin andor earrings. Look at one of the photos with Nancy, Hillary and an unknown woman all in the pantsuit uniform. How dull and boring even in Lavender, Aqua and Orange. Michelle in her black shirtwaist dress looks more modern. Her flats are the smart choice. I will bet that she walks miles a day and if she had on heels, there would be lots of blisters. People forget if you have blisters today, you cannot put on a pair of shoes tomorrow without exascerbating the problem and by the forth day, you will be in flipflops. Non active First Ladies could afford to show up in heels and stockings and stand for a bit and go home. With Michelle Obama's level of activity with her duites at First Lady and as mother probably keep her going until at least dinner time and later if there are events. How to survive =Flats!

The selection of Sojourner Truth was NOT submitted by President Obama, it was authorized by President Bush in 2006 and co-sponsored by Senator Hillary Clinton. If McCain had won the election, it would be Cindy McCain making the presentation. The real honor should go to Former Sen Clinton, who sponsored the bill, as Sojourner Truth was a Suffragette. Ms Obama will have opportunity to support women's issues and if she feels so inclined, issues that affect African Americans.

"Ms Obama will have opportunity to support women's issues and if she feels so inclined, issues that affect African Americans."

I hate to break this to you, but Michelle Obama is a woman, and she is not limited to working on issues that affect AA people. The saddest part is that you miss totally what Truth stood for, and trying to deny that Michelle is, in fact, a woman as well as a person of color speaks exactly to what Truth addressed in her famous speech. You need it, here it is. Truth bared her breasts after this speech to prove to the crowd she was a woman after uttering these words:

"Dat man ober dar say dat women needs to be helped into carriages, and lifted ober ditches, and to have de best places...and ain’t I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have plowed and planted and gathered into barns and no man could head me - and ain’t I a woman? I could work as much as any man (when I could get it), and bear de lash as well - and ain’t I a woman? I have borne five children and I seen ‘em mos all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with a mother’s grief, none but Jesus hear - and ain’t I a woman?"

A really courageous person in the civil rights struggle is Ruby Bridges. The story of her getting up every morning and going to first grade under those scary circumstances is an inspiring lesson of courage for all ages but an essential lesson that one person can make a difference to all children of every color. I don't know if she would get into the Capitol but it would be excellent if there was a reminder of Ms. Bridges at the new swing set at the White House.

My own children's Montessori school marched in San Antonio's MLK March one year under the banner of "What if Ruby Bridges had just stayed home?"

Michelle Obama was honoring the great American trailblazer, Sojourner Truth---that's what matters. I don't care about her stripped dress, seriously.
