I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Jeff Zeleney of the New York Times somehow managed to sneak in a 4-part question during President Obama's press conference marking his first 100 days in office. Zeleny asked the President what he surprised him, enchanted him, troubled him, and humbled him about the office during these first 100 days. Obama interrupted Zeleny partway through his question so he could write it down, a move that elicited laughter from the press corps, especially when Zeleny repeated his query about what "enchanted" him.

Watch Obama's in depth answer below. Transcript below the video.

QUESTION: Thank you, Mr. President.

During these first 100 days, what has surprised you the most about
this office? Enchanted you the most from serving in this office?
Humbled you the most? And troubled you the most?

OBAMA: Now let me write this down.

(LAUGHTER)

OBAMA: I've got...

QUESTION: Surprised, troubled...

OBAMA: I've got -- what was the first one?

QUESTION: Surprised.

OBAMA: Surprised. QUESTION: Troubled.

OBAMA: Troubled.

QUESTION: Enchanted.

OBAMA: Enchanted, nice.

(LAUGHTER)

QUESTION: And humbled.

OBAMA: And what was the last one, humbled?

QUESTION: Humbled. Thank you, sir.

OBAMA: All right. OK. Surprised. I am surprised compared to where I
started, when we first announced for this race, by the number of
critical issues that appear to be coming to a head all at the same
time.

You know, when I first started this race, Iraq was a central issue,
but the economy appeared on the surface to still be relatively strong.
There were underlying problems that I was seeing with health care for
families and our education system and college affordability and so
forth, but obviously, I didn't anticipate the worst economic crisis
since the Great Depression.

And so, you know, the typical president, I think, has two or three big
problems. We've got seven or eight big problems. And so we've had to
move very quickly and I'm very proud of my team for the fact that
we've been able to keep our commitments to the American people, to
bring about change, while at the same time managing a whole host of
issues that had come up that weren't necessarily envisioned a
year-and-a-half ago.

Troubled? I'd say less troubled, but, you know, sobered by the fact
that change in Washington comes slow. That there is still a certain
quotient of political posturing and bickering that takes place even
when we're in the middle of really big crises.

I would like to think that everybody would say, you know what, let's
take a time-out on some of the political games, focus our attention
for at least this year, and then we can start running for something
next year. And that hasn't happened as much as I would have liked.

Enchanted? Enchanted. I will tell you that when I -- when I meet our
servicemen and -women, enchanted is probably not the word I would use.

(LAUGHTER)

OBAMA: But I am so profoundly impressed and grateful to them for what
they do. They're really good at their job. They are willing to make
extraordinary sacrifices on our behalf. They do so without complaint.
They are fiercely loyal to this country.

And, you know, the more I interact with our servicemen and women, from
the top brass down to the lowliest private, I'm just -- I'm grateful
to them.

Humbled by the -- humbled by the fact that the presidency is
extraordinarily powerful, but we are just part of a much broader
tapestry of American life, and there are a lot of different power
centers. And so I can't just press a button and suddenly have the
bankers do exactly what I want or, you know, turn on a switch and
suddenly, you know, Congress falls in line.

And so, you know, what you do is to -- is to make your best arguments,
listen hard to what other people have to say, and coax folks in the
right direction.

This metaphor has been used before, but the ship of state is an ocean
liner. It's not a speedboat. And so the way we are constantly thinking
about this issue, of how to bring about the changes that the American
people need, is to -- is to say, if we can move this big battleship a
few degrees in a different direction, you may not see all the
consequences of that change a week from now or three months from now,
but 10 years from now or 20 years from now, our kids will be able to
look back and say, "That was when we started getting serious about
clean energy. That's when health care started to become more efficient
and affordable. That's when we became serious about raising our
standards in education."

And -- and so I -- I have a much longer time horizon than I think you
do when you're a candidate or if you're listening, I think, to the
media reportage on a day-to-day basis.

And I'm humbled, last, by the American people who have shown
extraordinary patience and I think a recognition that we're not going
to solve all of these problems overnight.

I'm "profoundly impressed and grateful" to and for President Obama. He is heroic (and I don't care how much the right wing makes fun of the acknowledgement). I so thoroughly admire him. It's been a long time since an American public figure has been worthy of the term "hero"--no wonder the right can't recognize it.

I'm trying to imagine how Bush would have answered that question.

didn't the press have to have their questions approved by the bush wh before they were asked; and weren't the media basically threatened the entire time he was in office?

I just gotta say...so friggin refreshing to watch a man, let alone the president of the US, speak so eloquently, so thoughtfully and so candidly!!!! Thank god...and I do believe he wants to make the US a better, more fair country for EVERYONE not just the top 1%...wow, that's all I can say...

Long ago, in teaching, I always accepted questions that, on the surface, appeared to be stupid because I had learned early in my career that every question deserves an answer, even one that could have been expressed more eloquently. I also learned that one of the most effective ways to get at the root of the questioner's concern was to rephrase the question or to ask some clarifying Q's in return.
I will admit that President Obama is as good as I anyone have ever seen at sorting out the meat of a question and answering it in depth as well as breadth. The scope of his knowledge about the broad range of issues he faces is truly awesome and his articulate and pointed responses are a treat to the ears. The comparison with the buffoonish answers and inarticulate responses of his predecessor are so profound as to be light years away in consequence as well as sagacity.

I find it odd that everyone is focusing on the question/ questioner rather than the presidents answers. The point of an unorthodox question is to bypass rehearsed lines and instead get a better sense of how that person thinks.

Surprised: repubs posturing and playing political games during the worst economic crisis since TGD

Troubled: change is slow and takes time

Enchanted: how freaking awesome our service men and women are

Humbled: congress, banks, etc have entrenched interests they're unwilling to relinquish easily

Seems like a pretty good question to me. Maybe if Fixed News had asked it the tr#lls on here would see it too.

I feel like I should cross-post this to the First 100 Days threads.

What has surprised me about Barack Obama's first 100 days in office is the realization that I wasn't just an optimistic fool; he really is that good.

What troubles me the most is that he hasn't found a way to directly confront the Krugman side of the banking debate.

What enchanted me most is, of course, the new, cute, undisciplined yet obedient, not-technically a rescue sidekick in the White House, Joe Biden.

And what has humbled me the most? The amount of deference he pays to the conservative end of the spectrum, not because the conservatives have any validity, but because conservatism does.

I think the reporter made it out to be a lighthearted question but Obama made it deep, that's the wonder of him.

Great answers.

I loved it when Pres Obama reached in his jacket pocket for a pen & said, "wait a minute, let me write this down", in only a way that Pres Obama could have said it. I just love our president's dry wit!! He has a great sense of humor. Even, "dog-face" Pat Buchannan has said he likes Pres Obama's wit.

Please will someone please name which one of YOU could try so Hard & Honest with We the People that at times a teleprompter would not be a Good Tool.

Besides leaving yourself open for questions from the Press about all the Critical Issue Questions needed to addressed by Our President .

No President at any time that I have seen has faced as many everyday problems(Pirates-H1N1-etc) as well as INHERITED problems in the 1st 100 days .

Any one what to change Places with him, with one condition you would have to be as Good!
Solutions not whining--taking responsibility for himself and his administration, trying to DO what should work ready to change it not working---accepting of criticisms ---only wishing for Positive help from all Of Us as We the People....

Folks, it was an easy question to answer. Any high school senior who has gone through a scholarship interview has faced tougher questions. So let's settle down a bit on the fact that he could answer it.

The fact remains that a reporter of that caliber should have something better to ask the President. Perhaps a question about the banks? Or a question about the latest economic news?

The only question I can envision that would have been more cringe-worthy is, "Boxers or briefs?"

If GW ever said anything of half the thoughtfulness, you would have proclaimed him selected by God. Oh, yeah, he alluded to that himself.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:01 PM on 04/30/2009

Not true. You don't know what I think of GW. Frankly, I don't think he was all that articulate.

Anything else?

You may be right...it may have been a lame, softball question. But the President took it seriously, and gave it real thought; took time to develop a reasoned answer. He could have been flipant and moved on, but he didn't

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:28 AM on 05/01/2009

Yes, anybody could have answered it, but hardly(?) anyone could have answered it with the insight and sagacity President Obama did. Give him his due!

I loved this question and the answers!!!
Especially for fun listening to & because fox about went crazy over it
Thought they were not going to televise wonder which Channel those FOOLS watched it on. oreilly & miller both couldn't have been more Hateful about the newsman that asked it he should feel proud of shaking those ego-maniacs up
I loved it!
But, then again what else is New they all love being mad about something. What disgruntled unfair and bias talking heads they are on fox..
Ruppert should be proud.

I loved this question--it was unpredictabele and questioned President Obama's heart which required true transparency. He answered each question thoughtfully, sincerely and intelligently. President Obama is capable of answering any question with indepth, heartfelt answers, with is quite refreshing, considering what we have had to try and digest over the past eight years. President Obama--a man with a conscience and a big heart.
