Obama

***WATCH OBAMA LIVE AT 8 PM EST***

In his primetime press conference Wednesday night (the third of his term), President Obama will echo what he said in a townhall meeting earlier in the day: as cheered as he is by the progress made in his first 100 days, there is much more work to be done.

"So we are off to a good start. But it is just a start," Obama will say. "I am proud of what we have achieved, but I am not content. I am pleased with our progress, but I am not satisfied."

Obama also plans to address the swine flu virus and the budget passed by both the House and the Senate earlier in the day.

The full advance excerpts:

We are continuing to closely monitor the emerging cases of the H1N1 flu virus throughout the United States. As I said this morning, this is obviously a very serious situation, and every American should know that their entire government is taking the utmost precautions and preparations.

...

This budget builds on the steps we've taken over the last one hundred days to move this economy from recession to recovery and ultimately to prosperity. We began by passing a Recovery Act that has already saved or created over 150,000 jobs and provided a tax cut to 95% of all working families. We passed a law to provide and protect health insurance for eleven million American children whose parents work full-time. And we launched a housing plan that has already contributed to a spike in the number of homeowners who are refinancing their mortgages, which is the equivalent of another tax cut.

But even as we clear away the wreckage of this recession, I have also said that we cannot go back to an economy that is built on a pile of sand - on inflated home prices and maxed-out credit cards; on overleveraged banks and outdated regulations that allowed the recklessness of a few to threaten the prosperity of us all.

We must lay a New Foundation for growth - a foundation that will strengthen our economy and help us compete in the 21st century. And that's exactly what this budget begins to do. It contains new investments in education that will equip our workers with the right skills and training; new investments in renewable energy that will create millions of jobs and new industries; new investments in health care that will cut costs for families and businesses; and new savings that will bring down our deficit.

...

So we are off to a good start. But it is just a start. I am proud of what we have achieved, but I am not content. I am pleased with our progress, but I am not satisfied. Millions of Americans are still without jobs and homes, and more will be lost before this recession is over. Credit is still not flowing nearly as freely as it should. Countless families and communities touched by our auto industry still face tough times ahead. Our projected long-term deficits are still too high. Government is still not as efficient as it should be. We still confront threats ranging from terrorism to nuclear proliferation to pandemic flu. And all of this means you can expect an unrelenting, unyielding effort from this administration to strengthen our prosperity and our security - in the second hundred days, and the third hundred days, and all the days after.

...

So we have plenty of work left to do. It is work that will take time. It will take effort. But the United States of America will see a better day. We will rebuild a stronger nation. And we will endure as a beacon for all those weary travelers beyond our shores who still dream that this is a place where all is possible.

Well, President Obama sure beat a hasty retreat on bankruptcy reform and was nowhere to be seen when Senators Dodd and Durbin were trying to keep homeowners in their homes. This, in spite of the fact that his administration had stated that bankruptcy reform was one of the keys to economic recovery and after he had cosponsored a similar bill last year while senator.

Was this done just to get votes and now that he's in, he's not going to keep his word? Was bankruptcy reform something that he could sacrifice so the banks would not get mad? Take a look at the Huffington Post article by Ryan Grim, "In Their Own Words: Why Dem Senators Screwed Homeowners" at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/01/in-their-own-words-why-de_n_194589.html.

You'll see over 2,750 comments, the vast majority from Americans angry at the failure to pass bankruptcy reform. Then check out Arianna Huffington's comments on Keith Olbermann's Countdown: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-tv/arianna-on-countdown-disc_b_195014.html.

President Obama's advisors screwed up big time on this one. He should have insisted and still should insist that bankruptcy reform be done NOW.

After watching the press conference, I realize that there are two MORE things that I really appreciate about President Obama:

1. Unlike Bush who we only saw for photo-ops, we've actually witnessed President Obama engage in the work of the President. Even in my 60+ years, I've learned more about the work of the President since Obama took office - from the mundane to the profound - than I have with any President before. President Obama's objective is not only to be a leader of our nation, but to educate us about our government, and I find this commendable. Both he and Michelle have taken on a greater role and responsibility in the White House than I've seen in many years, if ever.

2. I also appreciate the fact that when President Obama answers the questions from the press, he gives comprehensive answers (some would say much too long) that demonstrate that he actually knows what he's talking about and that he has a full grasp of the subject, whether it's about torture or about immigration, about the growing nuclear concern in Pakistan or a woman's right to choose. And in this respect also, he is an educator as well. His breadth of knowledge and depth of understanding on any subject that is raised is phenomenal, especially after what we experienced the last 8 years.

Once again, I was very impressed with our President.

But we better pay attention because the Governor of Utah maybe a sleeper

Huntsman Warns GOP Leaders
In an interview with ABC News, Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman (R) blasted Republicans in Congress for not engaging with President Obama.

Said Huntsman: "You can't just say no. You can't just obstruct or obfuscate. Instead of just kind of grousing and complaining, it would do us all a whole lot of good if we actually started engaging directly in finding compromises and common ground and shared solutions... When you are devoid of the ideas, or the content that would allow you to articulate or paint a better future, you have no choice other than to fall back on 'no, we are not going support it, it cannot be done."

It seems Huntsman is intent on positioning himself as a possible moderate Republican candidate for president in 2012.

The GOP nomination passes through the base. Those white people with the offensive signs and the teabags? That's the base. They're not going to pick a moderate. Moderation is their enemy.
10:23 PM on 04/29/2009
TOTUS is in charge. He does not need the Republicans. Tired of hearing all the complaining from the enlightened left. Time for TOTUS to execute his plan. Who cares about the Republicans? He can do everything without them. Impressive leaders Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are there to do it all. Hey, they have been in charge since 2006 so they have alot of experience.

How many times am I going to have to say this....

Obama is intentionally leaving the door open for prosecutions by making it clear that waterboarding IS torture and that the legal rationale was faulty.....

BUT....he is NOT going to somehow become prosecutor-in-chief.....back off a bit Maddow

It's not his job.

The best way to remove most of the politics from the subject is fro him to speak as he did, and stay above the fray.
10:11 PM on 04/29/2009
Agreed... he can't afford to become the prosecutor

Exactly!! the complain so much about Gonzalez and what he did in the Bushie admin. President Obama is alowing the AG and DOJ to do thier job. They want him to be Kusinich and come out ranting and raving which would be a bad thing. The proof is in what he isn't saying and doing. If the President was so against prosecution he would have said so a long time ago. and it would have been the end of the story...I swear sometimes progressives like Maddow and olberman get in there own way...

GOP establishment steps in

CNN gets the first shot at news of an effort to revive the Republican brand pulled together by Eric Cantor and featuring most of the party's best-respected leaders.

Its most notable feature, though, is its "Council of Experts," which includes virtually all of the leading figures who stand within the medium-sized tent of establishment Republicanism: Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney, Haley Barbour, Bobby Jindal, and -- perhaps an exception to that characterization -- John McCain. The party's congressional leaders will be the group's formal leadership.

Absences: Steele, Sarah Palin, and Gingrich.

The National Council for a New America will, reportedly, serve as a platform for a policy debate and a search for new ideas and a new image.

From the letter launching the group:

We do this not just to offer an alternative point of view or to be disagreeable. Instead, we want to ask the American people what their hopes and dreams are. Since January, the President and the Democratic Majority in Congress have - rightfully so - put forward their plan for the future, now we must listen, learn and lead through an honest, open conversation with the American people that will result in building policy proposals that will yield the best results for our nation's long-term success.

The group's first meeting is in Arlington Saturday, and they'll hold a series of town halls around the country.

Cantor's staff is said to be managing the operation, and its leak-free launch seems like a good sign.

Interesting response about the state secrets issue. Basically, he wants some more openness and they are reviewing policies. From what I understand, since they haven't had time to think all of this through, they chose a broad approach for the cases they had to deal with in the first weeks. Reassuring, and it makes sense.

The President was his usual competent, coherent and thoughtful self. Another good one, Mr. President.

Pres. Obama (yes, I voted for him) could really take this opportunity to loosen the knot the cheap labor advocates tied up employment with for so many years. Instead of introducing a "immigration bill" he could just enforce immigration policies which require the proper paperwork and other requirements for immigration, and beef up the INS. I don't care where these people come from, Ireland, Mexico, wherever, they should not be allowed citizenship out of hand. To do so would disrespect those who come here legally. As for the Hispanic vote, are they going to vote for Republicans? Remember, 40% of Hispanics voted for George Bush in 2000. They only vote Democratic because they thought they'd get a better deal.
