Markoff Panties

ABC News reports that police have discovered 16 pairs of women's panties in the home of Philip Markoff, the man alleged to be the Craigslist killer. Along with the panties, the police found 60 pairs of flex-cuffs, which were presumably used to tie up his victims. Markoff has been accused of targeting escorts who advertised their services on Craigslist.

Read ABC News' full report here.

It has recently come to light that Markoff was also using Craigslist to solicit sex from men and transsexuals. "The Today Show" interviewed a man who was contacted by Markoff for such purposes. Watch that report here.

Hey the BTK Killer's wife still supports him. Why shouldn't this chick stand by her man?

Now that's incriminating evidence.

If his loyal girlfriend finds out the panties aren't hers...will she begin to get a clue?

Well it depends on what size those panties are.
Statistics from a poll taken at worst and best.com show 36% of men wear women's panties

I'm like a lot of posters I'd like for us to wait for the juries verdict before we cast stones. This has become a real problem with our justice system....trial by media taints the jury pools...badly.

Come on, let's not be too hard on the boy. Who doesn't keep a pantie collection. As for the cuffs, it's always cheaper to buy in bulk.

True. You never know when you're going to need one. Better safe then sorry.

Well, I like to assume innocent until proven guilty - but 60 pairs of hand cuffs seems excessive. And, I thought he lived with the fiancee? So what's up with that. How could she not know about these items?

Having lived in Canada through the Paul and Karla Hulmulka nightmare I am fully aware of the depts of depravity folks can get up to.

60 pairs of handcuffs are excessive? How about one pair?

Department of Depravity indeed.

We should just leave the poor girl alone. I bet it must be devastating to be in love and then face the fact that the man is being accused of horrible things.

Not nearly as devastating as finding out AFTER she married him, or going through her life blind to her blind dysfunction.
Poor girl, she is going to need some good therapy to understand enough not to pair up with a disaster next time.

They also found a gun. Why is this not mentioned in the short version? Key piece.

Also, 16 pairs of panties? SIXTEEN? How many victims were there?

And 60--SIXTY--pairs of cuffs? How long was this spree going to last? *shudder*

It's commonly thought by criminal profilers that serial killers rarely start off killing. He may have had contact with 16 women while working himself up to the point where only killing satisfied his demons. He may well have begun with simple play bondage, worked up to actual bondage, then when that wasn't enough began the killing.

While I work for an indigent defense firm as an investigator, I've never actually worked a serial killer's case. Our office works up solely to attempted murder, cases that exceed that level, go to specialized indigent defense firms, and I do have relationships with their attorneys and investigators.

So while I can't say that his initial contacts began at a lower level and worked its way upward, the taking of trophies are usually a sign of an escalating psychopath/serial killer.

And I do agree with some posters that he is innocent until proven guilty. Even then, he may not necessarily be guilty there are more and more older cases where people have been found guilty only to be exonerated with DNA evidence that was not a science at the time of their trial.

A guilty plea also does not always mean guilt, just that the risk of going to trial far exceeds the punishment of the offer the DA has put on the table.

I think you are right about working your way up with crimes. I had a stalker who only began as a way to get back at the landlord when I moved in as his replacement tenant and then he found out how exciting it was. Then, he really got in to it with threats, stealing mail, entering when I wasn't home, calling at 2am to tell me what he was gonna do until phone tapping by the police finally shut him down when he got sloppy.

I doubt she's in denial any more. I actually think she realizes now he's a killer.
But to say she believes he's innocent is the safest strategy for now. Otherwise,
she opens up a can of worms: when did you change your mind? was
it really after he was caught or did you notice things earlier,...? These are the
last things she needs to deal with now, especially given that as the case unfolds
she may end up being implicated any how.

psychopaths, sociopaths

are NOT to be confused with people with mental health diagnoses... in a lot of violent crimes like this people want to go straight to the "is he bipolar, schizophrenic, schizoaffective disorder?"

there is no medicine that will treat him, no amount of therapy or peer support services that will cause him to stop doing what he is driven internally to do. what he does will continue to escalate, even if he is imprisoned, and once he gets out, he will pick up where he left off.

people are objects, meat to this type of personality (this includes his fiancee), they have no feeling for others, and are very good at faking it -

how thankful we should all be that he is off the streets

moonflowerjewelry, I agree with the main idea you're making here, except I think you need to add "less extreme" in your sentence:

...psychopaths, socriopaths are NOT to be confused with people with more common mental-health diagnoses."

If this guy is guilty (and even based on circumstantial evidence, it appears to be the case), he's most likely suffering from antisocial personality disorder (the current diagnostic guide for the US mental-health pros doesn't call it psychopath, although they do in the UK). Personality disorders are always more serious and fundamental than adjustment disorders.

Medicine could help, professional therapy could help, but it wouldn't be enough. He does need to be off the streets.

To date, there is no peer reviewed theory that any medications or psycho therapy successfully treat people with personality disorders

Personality disorders, like any type of illness has varying degrees. Most of us have had at one time or another, contact with a person with a personality disorder. Most do not escalate to the point of having no empathy for others.

Sociopaths normally straddle the line, but rarely cross over into killing.

I work with an indigent defense firm as an investigator. A great deal of my time is interviewing friends, family members, co-workers, neighbors of our clients prior to sending them to a psychologist, to provide the psychologist with "subject" data, prior to any testing.

Normally psychologist receive arrest reports, which color many tests conducted which rely on subjective rather than objective findings.

In my years (20 +) I've come across hundreds of personality disorders & sociopaths, many which are determined via testing to continue to be a danger to society, for adjustment/anti social disorders. The long term prognosis that while the individual exhibits signs of further harm, it will most likely occur only if similar stressors are combined with similar circumstances or relationship issues.

I've only come across one true psychopath who attempted to murder a drug associate, only wounded him, but hired someone in the jail to complete the task when that person's release date arrived.

Sociopaths miss a key human window in development, never developing empathy. They only feel what they feel. They are aware of how others think and can intellectually understand it, but can't FEEL it. That is what makes them fabulous liars, deceivers.

There is no fix for missing that key window.
