When Suzanne Forsling moved to Juneau Alaska from Iowa, she found that it was a little bit harder to get her garden to grow. Frustrated by cold soil, scarce sunlight, hungry slugs, root maggots, porcupines, cats, bears and ravens she got resourceful.

I hope peat pots were used. If the gutters are made of aluminum or lead, there could be permanent and irreversible neurotoxic effects when people consume plants that have absorbed heavy metals. If you can correct that important issue, than it's a great idea.

Absolutely brilliant. My garden is so shady that there's only one small area that really gets enough sunshine to grow things at the bottom of my garden but it's narrow so I've never been able to put it to good use. I've just sketched this out and I'm putting hubby to work on it tomorrow. Our next door neighbor has miles of gutter about to go in the garbage in the spring pickup.

I'm thinking a slightly stepped wooden frame that allows me 4 or 5 vertical rows will give me more than enough for our use and lots of extra for our food bank.

Stepped frames work great. Our commercial nurseries have used this system for years to display the most plants in the least space while giving them all the light they need. We have a neighbor who has grown strawberries very successfully this way. No weeding !

This is awesome. A little note here, that the wall is easily covered with dirt which came from the upper rack of watered soil , unless given a space in between.

I thought of using rain gutters as the bases for a hydroponic system, but I shelved the idea due to a lack of vertical space.
