Sixty-one anti-torture protesters were arrested outside the White House on Thursday in a planned act of mass civil disobedience at the end of an event organized by Witness Against Torture and Amnesty International.

The protesters -- wearing black hoods and orange jumpsuits -- were part of a larger group of 150 that marched in a slow procession from the Capitol to Lafeyette Park across from the White House to protest the torture of detainees held in U.S. counter-terror efforts. Before the group of 61 triggered arrest by blocking the sidewalk outside the White House, speakers in Lafeyette Park demanded that the Obama administration close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay and investigate and prosecute officials of the previous administration who crafted harsh interrogation policies.

"This is the 101st day of the Obama administration and Gitmo is still open. That's why we're here," said organizer Frida Berrigan to the legion of detainees. "The only way to decisively break from the Bush administration is to indict those responsible" for torture.

One protester held a sign that played on Obama's campaign slogans. It said, "The Audacity of Torture" and "The Audacity of War Crimes."

"Obama presumably has to listen to the progressive wing of his party. He certainly does risk alienating his base on this issue," said WAT spokesman Jeremy Varon to the Huffington Post.

The orange-clad protesters marched toward the White House, following military-style orders from Carmen Trotta, who was wearing camo fatigues. (Varon said Trotta does not have military background.) The protesters displaced two eighth-grade classes from Michigan posing for class pictures at the White House fence.

The arrests begin as an officer tightens the cuffs on Trotta, then everyone else. WATCH:

The protest is wrapped up as a police officer neatly folds the protesters' banner and the last members of the group are loaded into paddywagons. WATCH:

These are the same people who would want a *ra*pi*st tortured if he attacked someone in their community. Give me a break!

Of course it's Bush's detainees. That's what the protesters are saying, plus they want the Bush Admin. investigated and prosecuted.

Absolutely. I wish it had gotten a fraction of the press that the teaparties got. Had more people known about it beforehand, there may have been a much larger group.

His justice department needs to make this a priority. And his justice department should have been appointed with this in mind.

People on the outside are always so quick to tell those on the inside what needs to be THEIR priority.

I would give the benefit of the doubt if human beings didn't ALWAYS go back to that.
Its just your opinion, the truth of the matter is they don't HAVE to jack until they are ready.

You guys got the wrong administration at the wrong time.

At least in my opinion.

How many men does it take exactly?

Wrong time?
Wrong administration?
Are you suggesting we should sit back 4 to 8 YEARS until another administration with some cahones finally comes along to do the job we elected this one to do?

How about your comments perhaps being wrong-headed?

He is The President. He could do more. He could do better. He could require that our laws and our constitution be enforced.

Yes, and some people chose him for President precisely because they sadly thought that his words were more than empty...of course some of us KNEW he was a big talker and not a man of action.

I'm an Obama fan. Overall, I'm pleased that he is our president. That said, stopping this amoral, disgusting behavior that we were led into by the last administration cannot wait. I do not accept that we must continue to torture while the man wades through red tape. He MUST put his foot down and stop this NOW, or he lets us all down. Even if he can't push it through congress (or whoever it has to go through) immediately, we need to be hearing some fiery language from him that continuously lets us, the world, and the powers that be know that he is against these practices, and will fight tooth and nail to stop them. What we have heard so far is, unfortunately, lukewarm at best.

And the only 'wrong time' to object to torture is 'later'.

"the group of 61 triggered arrest by blocking the sidewalk outside the White House"

Blocking a SIDEWALK "triggers" arrest?????

A freakin SIDEWALK ????

The DC officers of the peace should get out of town more often. Blocked sidewalks happens EVERYDAY around the country.

And if protesters want to be arrested to make a point, at least make them work a little for it!

And what's this "triggers" thing? Are there any humans involved in the decision or has our law enforcement been passed off to some machine somewhere?

The ironic thing is that informing the congress that the chief executive is about to institute systematic torture is supposed to "trigger" automatic impeachment.

More ironic still, if such failsafe fails, and the torture system is actually put in place by the chief executive, that's supposed to automatically "trigger" his arrest as soon as is practicably possible, such as immediately upon a new attorney general not involved in the crime taking office.

Headline/Blog Disconnect Alert!!!!: Headline, "Torture Protesters Arrested in Droves....". Actual article report summary: 61 out of 150 protesters were arrested as planned after the uniformed protesters dislodged a legitimate group of kids whose visit to the national capitol was turned from an experience of a lifetime to a negative experience destroyed by political baffoons. Ms. Huffington, can't you do something to get rid of the party or parties responsible for your irresponsible ledes?????

Which of the 4 words so offends your sense of accuracy?
Torture?
Protesters?
Arrested?
Droves?

Since the other words are fairly straightforward, I'm gonna guess DROVES, as it's a big word and you might not understand it.
Means a large crowd of humans,
61 is kinda large, don't cha think?

I'll use it in another sentence to help you out:
'Droves of Democratic voters and Obama supporters cannot believe he now has no intention of investigating or holding anyone accountable for their countries engagement in torture.'

As for the kiddies, they came to Washington to see the seat of our democracy and got to actually witness democracy in action. Lucky little devils. Don't weep for them.

Weep for your country.

They should be proud to have seen such an event.

Oh yeah, pretty hard to arrest in droves when droves don't show up. A drove is more like hundreds at least.

"Drove" was comes from Old English "draf" meaning 'a set of animals driven in a group'.

Now, the average size of an 11th century flock of sheep was 65.45 animals. But towns could also administer sheep and, you are correct, these droves could number well in the hundreds (the available statistics are not available).

But was Mr. Delaney comparing the protesters to an 11th century town flock of sheep or some other drove?

For instance, gaggles of geese can also be driven in a group and here--lo and behold!--the average size of a gaggle in 11th century England was 30.5!! Therefore the DC police arrested exactly 2 droves worth of 11th century English geese gaggles!

Bravo Mr. Delaney!

Good info. I always had a vague sense that the thing that made a crowd into a drove was that the drove was moved to go someplace by a common cause, like desire for concert tickets, or, in this case, the police actually literally driving them like sheep.

Seriously, give the President a break. He IS closing GITMO. They have to have somewhere to take the prisoners. Give him a bit of time for pete's sake. It gets really tiresome to read about this stuff. This is how the people who watch FOX (not really) news got so right wing. Just delved deeper and deeper into perceived "victimhood". Find a new story. Did you know that the republican'ts are reinventing themselves and Jindal is helping them do it. And that Cantor (who I think was separated at birth from Ted Haggard) is too. Their lips both jut out in a funny way when they talk. Now THAT is an interesting story to speculate on. This arresting people in black hoods and orange jump suits is more than a bit sensational for nothing kind of thing. Plus, Sarah Palin sat on a dead bear on TV. Come on, you can do better than the arrest over something that is being done thing.

Come on guys....it's been 100 days and Obama has been more than fulfilling his promises...but he was handed an economic depression and now the swine flu that weren't there to make promises on during the campaign so in the priority of things...he's picking the right priorities.

He already stopped the torture of the Bush administration and he's going to handle GITMO....but right now if this economy doesn't improve and we don't get our jobs back, places to live and money for food....I think you are going to be finding some American boat people heading over to the island, kicking out the prisoners and taking a nice vacation in a place where prisoners are better of than many of us Americans first.

Crimes aren't "over with" until the perpetrators are brought to justice and amends are made to the victims. Normally, this is an automatic thing. But these very rich men did a very shocking crime, and the system seems to have frozen up, so we're giving it a bit of a jog.

Someone needs to inform the DC cops that Bush is gone and the old storm-trooper mentality is not going to be tolerated anymore.

We have a right to protest anything, and NONE OF US WILL BE RELEGATED TO FREE SPEECH ZONES ANYMORE!

Cops better start respecting the constitution again or citizens will start using justifiable force to protect their rights. The worse things get in the economy, and the more the Republicans stonewall progress on disasters they caused themselves, the more insistent the population is going to become that their civil liberties be respected.

We've all had enough from these thugs.
