Torture

Sixty-one anti-torture protesters were arrested outside the White House on Thursday in a planned act of mass civil disobedience at the end of an event organized by Witness Against Torture and Amnesty International.

The protesters -- wearing black hoods and orange jumpsuits -- were part of a larger group of 150 that marched in a slow procession from the Capitol to Lafeyette Park across from the White House to protest the torture of detainees held in U.S. counter-terror efforts. Before the group of 61 triggered arrest by blocking the sidewalk outside the White House, speakers in Lafeyette Park demanded that the Obama administration close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay and investigate and prosecute officials of the previous administration who crafted harsh interrogation policies.

"This is the 101st day of the Obama administration and Gitmo is still open. That's why we're here," said organizer Frida Berrigan to the legion of detainees. "The only way to decisively break from the Bush administration is to indict those responsible" for torture.

One protester held a sign that played on Obama's campaign slogans. It said, "The Audacity of Torture" and "The Audacity of War Crimes."

"Obama presumably has to listen to the progressive wing of his party. He certainly does risk alienating his base on this issue," said WAT spokesman Jeremy Varon to the Huffington Post.

The orange-clad protesters marched toward the White House, following military-style orders from Carmen Trotta, who was wearing camo fatigues. (Varon said Trotta does not have military background.) The protesters displaced two eighth-grade classes from Michigan posing for class pictures at the White House fence.

The arrests begin as an officer tightens the cuffs on Trotta, then everyone else. WATCH:

The protest is wrapped up as a police officer neatly folds the protesters' banner and the last members of the group are loaded into paddywagons. WATCH:

They want the law enforced and Bush & Co. arrested for war crimes, as the law compels us to do.

Biased in causes.

On Monday, 91 protesters were arrested because they chained themselves to the White House Gates, and refused to leave. One wonders why that story didn't merit front page coverage on HP, but this one did. Do dems care more about the gitmo prisoners than independence for seniors and disabled. We have hundreds of innocent people incarcerated against their will just because they need health care. What a shame.

It was on the politics page, not HP front page; I spent all day monitoring. But I am happy that it made the politics page. However, it should have been on the Civil Rights section.

Your post presents false choices. We don't have to choose between health or accountability. After all, Obama brags that he can walk and chew gum at the same time. The Department of Justice can pursue the domestic and international crimes while Obama pursues his agenda.
Under the Geneva Convention, we are obligated by law to investigate and prosecute war crimes.

As much as I like Obama, I don't want to live in a country that embraces torture. Obama is trying to sweep the scandal under the rug for political purposes and we shouldn't let him get away with it.
This is too important an issue to be left to the political whims of Rahm Emanuel.

perhaps you didn't understand what I wrote.

seniors and people with disabilities are incarcerated in institutions, against their will, and without any fair trial,m and with no accountability.

Do you think using health care is an excuse to lock people away?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbaDh8Ywf-s

The issue is do people lose their civil rights when they become disabled?

The issue is, should they have the same right as others to choose where to live?

My comment here addresses the SOP, of shutting disabled away, out of sight-out of mind, and the idea that the gitmo torture protest merits front page attention, but freedom for disabloed doe's not.

"what a country, tor ture and you get protected, protest tor ture and you get arrested, yup that quite a country you there".

They got arrested because they were blocking the sidewalk outside of the White house. Umm... the protesters break the law in order to enforce that the President upholds the law concerning the Bush administration. The president is trying to address every issue in the country and people nearly accuse him of a crime. The republican party is doing everything they can to start a revolution and President Obama has only been in office 101 days.

I suppose you never heard of the principles of Civil Disobedience, hapiday? One key ingredient: Being willing to be arrested and face the consequences of disobeying the law in order to make one's point.

The main thing, I think, that is keeping Barack from acting quickly and decisively on prosecuting torture is the simple fact that it will all end up in the S. Court.

Before he heads there, there are some extremely crucial appointments to make.

Barack's sudden inability to take a position on the torture issue is because the Court is not yet stocked with fair judges. It's all Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Alito then you have Kennedy, Stevens and Souter who could go either way. Ginsburg and Breyer and the only ones who would rule against a former Republican president on torture, and Ginsburg is rather ill.

My guess is Barack wants 2 new judges, minimum, before he let's the torture trials start working their way up to the Court.

No, it won't. The trial will be held in the Senate which is almost as bad. It will NOT be held in the SC.

That's not where I thought redsongia was going with that.

This is not about impeachment but the legal definition of torture and such.

I think it would be more appropriate to use the International Criminal Court, which is available to us, though we are not compelled to use it or accept its judgments, we can choose to do so if we want. Those guys are experts on war crimes trials, and we wouldn't have to worry about someone being tried by judges they might have conflicts of interest with.

What? Didn't President Obama state Gitmo would close in a year? Before, protesting it would be nice if people had their facts straight. Ok, investigating the Bush administration I understand the protest. But, President Obama is not an active lawyer to be investigating or prosecuting the Bush administration. That's my we have an attorney general, let Holder do his job.

Where were these people while Bush was in office? They need to find a time machine and go back a few years if they want to complain about people being treated badly and maybe throw in the constitution being hijacked.

We were there. the media just didn't cover protests. Funny thing that, what?
In fact the SS used to go thru the parking lots at Bush's speeches and check if anyone's car had anti Iraq War bumper stickers and then hassle the folks if they did. Arrest them and spy on them and stuff like that, there
Kinda SUPPRESSED dissent.
It's no one's fault but your own that you have just started paying attention. That's why you're so ignorant.

Arrested for "obstructing the sidewalk"

Reminds of Alice Paul and company charges a 100 years ago when they were protesting for suffrage in that movie Iron Jawed Angels -- right before they were carted away to a prison and tortured.

What they're demanding is already in process. Gitmo is being closed and DoJ is investigating torture.

In other words, it's a waste of a good protest. Now, if they had been protesting the Senators who are going to fight like mad NOT to have the Gitmo detainees in THEIR prisons, it would have been fascinating :)

If you object to people being arrest for protesting the use of torture, but not for allowing torture, be sure to write to the White House and let them know. They need us to keep up the pressure on this, so they have a political excuse for doing the right thing.

I just realized how long it's been since we had a culture of protesting.

SOP is to create a civil misdemeanor, blocking traffic, crossing police lines, that kind of thing in order to guarantee an arrest. Read the article again paying attention to the timeline.

That is not SOP for protesting. That is SOP for getting arrested. It turns out, peaceful protest can have impact as well. But getting arrested helps draw more attention when you can't produce large numbers of people in support of your cause, whatever it may be. But hey, if you are lucky enough to have a job where a police record is irrelevant, then more power to you. Many of us need and desire a clean background. Not to mention I believe in peaceful protest.
